Review Visit: July 11th, 2016…read more Don't grandparents make the best food. While visiting Catfish Bend Casino, I figured I would see if there were any Ice Cream Shacks in the area. Luckily, I found one! So after the casino, I hit up Grandpa's to get some sweets. Parking here is pretty ample, so that's a huge plus. Inside is pretty spacious and they have a lot of flavors to choose from. Unlike a lot of Ice Cream Shacks, they only served ice cream and ice cream related things. No hot dogs, tenderloins, french fries here. I don't remember what I ordered from here, but I do remember it was pretty good. It scratched my itch but nothing beyond that. What really turned me off about this place was the worker behind the counter. His hygiene left a lot to be desired, which is reflected in my personal rating. I don't remember what he did, but it set off a red flag or two in my head as I watched him. But besides the one worker, it was a nice little place. I figured Burlington would offer a lot but this seemed to be the only ice cream shack that I could find on Yelp/Google.

HOMEMADE!! This is a locally owned icecream shop, so no they don't have a fancy sign, no they don't have fancy cups, but I didn't come here for, fancy. I came to Grandpas to try their homemade icecream whose recipes have been passed down from generation to generation. I had the medium cone with one scoop of Dark Chocolate and one scoop Salted Caramel, and it was Delicious!! The chocolate was rich and the caramel was so smooth and creamy. You can taste the love! They also have a big selection of flavors that very from day to day and may sellout if you don't get there quick enough. You can buy a pint to take home with you, or even a brownie or cookie that they use to make their sundaes. Duh they have sundaes!! And I have to come back and try them! So should you!

This isn't a bad Dairy Queen, but it isn't a fantastic one. The newer building and location really…read morehelps make a difference, and you can enjoy a nice interior dinner or take advantage of the outdoor seating. However, longer wait times and possibly-incorrect orders mean that I don't tend to go here unless I have a little bit of time to spare. It does hit the delicious craving for ice cream, though. THINGS TO KNOW: -Looking at the past prior reviews, this Dairy Queen used to be an older-built establishment in need of an update. This Dairy Queen has been recently updated (within the past 2 years, I'd estimate), and now it's one of the newest-looking buildings in this part of Monmouth. -Has a drive-thru and order-in interior. -Has a decently-spacious parking lot. -Is one of the new "Grill & Chill" locations that offers both warm foods and desserts. Offers a full Dairy Queen menu including Orange Julius. Pros: -Has an indoor bathroom. (I've never had to list this as a "pro" before, but it seems like a good chunk of the reviews list this as a problematic point. It's been since fixed) -Tables and seating are usually open. Looks like a lot of Monmouth residents probably take their treats to go. On a couple cases, I've seen uncleaned tables from people who'd made a mess and the tables hadn't been cleaned yet, but for the most part, it's easy to find a spot to sit. -The restaurant mostly uses tables and chairs. This means they have quite a bit of seating indoors, again, reducing the amount of problem getting a seat. -It also has an outdoor sitting area. In this heat, I wouldn't want to right now, but it's an option. It overlooks one of the busier roads in Monmouth, though, so it's not the most scenic of views. But it's not so loud that you can't carry on a conversation. Cons: -Seems to be staffed by a LOT of high school kids. They aren't bad at their jobs, per say, but I don't see anyone really old enough keeping them in a good line. For example, if there's a line growing, you'll occasionally see a staff member looking confused as to whether they should be helping or making food or what to do. -Again, staff is relatively unknowledgeable. I've watched a couple people come in with questions about cakes or other treats, and it requires a couple people conversing or attempting to look up some information to figure out the answer to the question. -Wait here is pretty long. It's not the worst, but depending on how busy they are, you can expect to spend a good amount of time waiting. -Have had some issues with incorrect orders. Staff seems confused but willing to remake the item when this happens.

I'm not sure if there is a management issue here or an overall employee issue, but this DQ is the WORST! My last visit I ended up the wrong item the first time, and when they 'fixed' it, they put chocolate chips in my lemon lime freeze. I'm still not sure if it was pure carelessness or done out of malice after having to correct the order. Our most recent visit we ordered two blizzards. The second one was so soupy there was no 'turning it upside down' it was dripping all over before it ever hit the car. Not only were they both a soupy mess, neither one was mixed as you can clearly see in the picture. I have tried calling and even left messages to speak to management about the poor service but my calls are never returned. I would not recommend this Dairy Queen location to anyone, next time you are passing through Monmouth for ice cream, keep going and don't look back!

Review Visit: May 13th, 2015…read more This ice cream is '¡muy caliente!" I knew Mexican soda was a thing but Mexican ice cream? Not in the capacity to have it's own ice cream shack. Well, queue my surprise when I learned that there was a Mexican ice cream shop in Peoria. One that has a name that leads you to think that maybe... just maybe this place is delicious. Doing what I normally do (as avid readers of this blog will know), I gathered up one of my friends who likes to travel (Matt) and we headed over the Illinois River (not the Peoria River) to get some ice cream (and add more bracketed comments to this paragraph for no reason). The location of Las Delicias is a bit of an odd one. Actually, those whole road of shops is not a greatly planned out area. You have all these shops along Main St but the parking situation leaves a lot to be desired. You usually have to hunt for a place to park and sometimes walk a small distance to your destination. I just wanted to put this in here as a warning should you want to venture down Main St. Matt and I found a place to park and headed in. Upon entering, we were greeted by a friendly cashier and shop that was small and felt homely (in a good way). This place truly felt like it was a family-owned. Matt and I browsed the handful of offerings and I was surprised by the flavors. Granted, this was over 5 years ago, so I don't remember the specifics and I failed to take a photo of what was being offered at the time. I grabbed some kind of strawberry ice cream while Matt got himself some flavor that I never heard of before. We paid for our ice cream desserts and headed out. I think there were a few chairs inside to sit but due to the small-sized of the restaurant, we opted to eat outside as we walked back to my car. I am a sucker for strawberry (and peanut butter) flavored treats. At this point in my life, I had quite a few different strawberry-flavored items but this one is the only one that instantly blew me away. Something about the quality of this dessert was unreal. It was far and above beyond anything you would find in the store unless you option for the expensive stuff. This stuff tasted homemade and had love in every scoop. I can't properly describe how much I loved this ice cream cone and how sad I was when it was gone. If you find yourself in Peoria and are on a circuit of trying out all the ice cream places, this one needs to be at the top of your list. You won't regret it. If you do go and you do regret it, lo siento. That's what life is all about though, right? Trying new things and seeing what the world has to offer.

Great variety it options, traditional and non-traditional flavors and very consistent in quality! I…read morelove going here for the yogurt cups and horchata as well!

Review Visit: August 8th, 2016…read more This castle has a moat of ice cream, corn dogs and deliciousness. I kid. There is actually no moat of ice cream, corn dogs and deliciousness, but there is a counter where you can order some of those. After driving past Kastle Kreme a few times on my way to Iowa, I finally made a conscientious effort to stop and try their ice cream. I do love me some ice cream shacks. Boy, what a yummy stop it was. From what I could tell, you can only walk up and order food. Which is fine, as other ice cream shacks I have been to are similar. For the size of the building, it's kind of odd that there isn't an indoor area, unless I am mistaken. It's about the size of a small business building, if that makes sense. If I can, I will update this blog to reflect any updates I find out about the place. I ended up ordering a simple ice cream cone. For the life of me, I don't remember the flavor (probably swirl), even after looking over the menu and my photos. I do remember enjoying the ice cream and thinking how I wish I could get some closer to my home. You really can't go wrong with most ice cream shacks. Also, you really can't screw up ice cream. Looking over their menu, it seems they offer your usual ice cream shack food offerings. Hot dogs, tenderloins, chicken tenders. Your usual lunch or dinner offerings. I didn't try any of those but they sound yummy. I will have to try some food next time. It's not too often I drive to and/or through Galesburg, so who knows when I will get back to the Kastle. I am hoping to revisit it next summer to try their other offerings as I love a good tenderloin and ice cream cone. When I do, I will update this blog accordingly.
