It is, essentially, a large warehouse that's been divided into the aforementioned working spaces and gallery strolls, and the provocative and intriguing nature of the work here is always worth lingering over. I might describe what I've most often seen as 'modern art with a conscience' but ultimately one of the things I think that they offer that really moves the creative needle are the classes they offer. Lithography, monotype, relief work, there's plenty going on if you want to learn how to express yourself. Who knows, maybe one day it'll be your work adorning these walls...or others.

I happened upon their printmaking shop not long after they opened in 1989 and I found their compassionate and intense outlook on printmaking and life to be a haven of creativity and brilliance. Katherine Brimberry and Mark L. Smith have the midas touch for choosing an excellent location for their business and committed people to work with... they also retain an artistic integrity in what they do and HOW they do it. Flatbed is a publishing workshop which means they do collaborative work with artists. They also work with other entities on printing limited editions of etchings, monotypes, lithographs... prints. ORIGINAL prints. which may seem like an oxymoron to some, but it makes sense if you have ever seen an edition of etchings. Each print is pulled by hand, each one an original print, from a piece of copper of a piece of zinc that an artist has labored over for years sometimes. Their location in East Austin has an exhibit space, printmaking studio, and office. Gerald Manson, Master Printer Emmeritus, is also the Master of Dry Humor and he loves NPR and great classical music... Flatbed World Headquarters shares space with 8 other creative professionals. Flatbed's workshops are stellar and I would always recommend anything Kathy Brimberry is teaching... Solar Plate would be a good start. Another great beginner class would be Intro to Copperplate Etching with Teresa. If you are a printmaking afficionado, maybe you would enjoy PhotoPolymer Film Intaglio. Mark Smith offers individual 90 minute critiques, which, for the active artist, can be informative, intense, and fun. Flatbed also offers business courses for artists including one about tax tips from a CPA and an internet promo class for artist on how to promote work by increasing web presence. My yelp disclaimer is that I taught printmaking to UT Architecture students at Flatbed for a summer ... If you are looking to buy original art for your home, stop by at one of their gallery exhibits or make an appointment... so you, too, may someday soon be able to say "Let me take you upstairs and show you my etchings..."

Spoiler Alert: not a bakery (anymore). I've walked by…read morecountless times knowing it's not a bakery, and in fact knowing it's an art gallery/gift shop. I've always wanted to check it out inside. However, when passing it was always enroute to an event at the Capitol, or other times they weren't open. Really glad I finally made it. As mentioned, it's not a bakery though it once was. In fact a Swedish bakery called this 1876 building home for nearly sixty years. Once inside, you're able to learn about Austin's Swedish immigrants (as well as others) by viewing an exhibit from the Lundberg Maerki collection. There's so much interesting history, it's just fascinating. The art gallery houses ever-changing exhibits. These exhibits all have one thing in common, the artists are over 50 years old and are local to Austin. The gift shop is more like a collective of artisan/handmade goods. Here you can find one-of-a-kind items. Things like paintings, jewelry, postcards, handcrafted gifts, etc. The artists & craftspeople selling their wares are also local. A lot of items sold here are also created by folks over 50. They have an outdoor patio space with a large mural. This is a nice place to visit whether you're local or a tourist. I will definitely go back again, especially if looking for a unique and special gift for someone. Support the arts. Support local artists. Support senior artists.

Every showcase I've gone to I've loved from start to finish -- especially because of the diversity in having different art themes in each art gallery (it's like going to 3 shows in one night). Yes, that's a run on sentence. As the title states Lopez is located high on a hill overlooking the Spicewood hill country. You are welcomed with a fabulous cocktail and a tour of their chapel and grounds. The chapel is beautiful and the centerpiece is a restored alter from Guadalajara, Mexico. Stained glass, Van Gogh reproductions, and locally sourced artwork adorn the walls. Stepping outside spend some time enjoying the vast Michelangelo-inspired granite mosaic patio covers their entire courtyard. Hiro Lopez guided our gazes to the hacienda-style house walls and the mosaics inspired Vincent van Gogh. We also toured one of their two suites. The suite is beautifully decorated and you can spend significant time just appreciating all the additional artwork. Our tequila tasting was hosted by Hiro and we really enjoyed their own Atanasio agave tequila. Hiro guided us through each tasting and provided excellent insight for each. Their Blanco is perfect for mixing or drinking cold with a cerveza. Their Reposado is perfect straight up and smooth as can be. I did detect vanilla and a wood finish. My Fav was the Anejo. Aged for over a year in oak barrels. This Anejo drank silky smooth and reminded me of an expensive Rye. I would not dare mix or add ice to either the Reposada or Anejo. Both of these are now resting in my liquor cabinet. We did opt for their elevated tasting experience which included a generous charcuterie plate that easily satisfied the four of us. What a wonderful way to spend an afternoon!

Gibson St. is one of two artisan-ONLY markets in the entire city: if it was made in China, then the artist is also Chinese. Great food, great people, great craftsmanship and selection. Better pricing than a department store, especially when you consider you're getting a ONE OF KIND creation, and most artists will customize on the spot for you at no added charge, if they can (depends on their art; some just can't)... Get THAT kind of service at Walmart! I am proud of the people I work with: all do great handmade and Austin-only goods! Fantastic tourist hit-it; you'll get nothing more authentically Austin than here. I've been in four other city markets, and this one has the best selection, artists, food, pricing, everything!
