My husband and his family would eat at this place 50 years ago when visiting relatives in a nearby city. This was his first time back in all those years. When we visited Cola de Caballo a few days ago, he saw the Sombrero from the car window. He got as excited as a little boy so I knew we had to go back and dine. We did so early tonight. I took a picture in front of the restaurant and menu. This establishment opened in the 40s, but has expanded over time and changed names. While we snacked on fresh fried tortilla chips, which are not the Tex Mex style, there was a red and green salsa. I told my husband the red salsa was off and not to eat it. He agreed. Hubs ordered Chili Relleno, refried beans and rice. I ordered Panels and a small guacamole, only to find my order came with guacamole. The guacamole was the real deal. ALL avocado, with diced tomatoes on the side. It was great. My grilled Panela was awesome. Hubs wasn't impressed with his Chili Relleno and said mine were better. Since I am not Hispanic, I find that a compliment. The waiter brought my husband's food out before mine, because he thought I only wanted a small guacamole. I waited patiently and then, we waited and waited for the ticket which was about $18 for the two of us with a bottled water. Not bad, I would say. I am glad he had a trip down memory lane. read more
