The menu offers a wide variety of adventures. High quality food. Salvadoran cuisine is delicious. The soups are excellent. Very good prices.

Not a fan. It was a long wait. I was also the only Caucasian in the restaurant .... which is usually a good sign. But I didn't enjoy the tamales, the mass was too mushy and bland. I didn't enjoy the pupusa. It was greasy and the filling was also mushy and bland. read more

Sometimes I forget that there is a lot going on along Colfax, east of Quebec. Today, I stopped by El Chalate for some delightful El Salvadorean cuisine. We started our lunch off by sharing a papusa, which could have been a meal in itself. The papusas here are fabulous, hot, thick and savory, served with a tomato sauce and cabbage salad. My entree was an order of their carne guisada, essentially a beef stew with potatoes, carrots, and yucca served with beans and rice. The meal came with a couple of thick, homemade tortillas. After washing my meal down with an order of horchata, I was ready to waddle home and take a siesta. read more

The pupusas are better than any other place I have tried but doesn't make them great. The service though , holy crap on a cracker it's so bad. Takes an hour to get your order whether you call it in or just show up. This last time we called it in right when they opened and this time over an hour. Never again. I will YouTube and make these suckers myself. I already know how to make the curtido and salsa roja! read more

I am a first generation American so my household was always full of standard Salvadoran fare. There are, fortunately, many places in Denver to satisfy a pupusa or plátanos fritos craving... but El Chalate is my top favorite! They do take long to make everything but that's cause everything is made from scratch! And you can taste the difference!! I live far south but at minimum I visit this place twice a year. I love this place and can't wait to visit next week with the family when they come in to visit... my siblings and parents love this place too read more

This place is very nice and authentic too! I live close and when I ordered the steak tacos...omg did I get steak tacos! They are not a fast food joint so call ahead for to go. Otherwise sit down and enjoy. read more

The fresh handmade pastelles and pupusas are my favorite! They are made to order and always tasty

Pupusas you say? El Chalate, you say? Yes, please! Truth be told, I had no idea what a pupusa was... all I knew was that it sounded funny thus, I must try it at least once. I have nothing to compare the pupusas from El Chalate to to determine how good or bad they are, but my mouth says they are awesome and I will continue to listen to it. The cabbage salad (no idea what it's really called in el salvadorian) that comes with the pupusas are crisp, delicious and perfectly complements the hot, ooey gooey cheesy pupusas. Other must try items include crunch beef tacos and plantains with el salvadorian sour cream. Oh, try the maranon drink also, it's refreshing and delicious. Complementary chips and salsa are nice - the salsa seems to be homemade and fresh. As for the restant itself... Ok, so El Chalate is a hole in the wall, but I have special love for hole in the wall restaurants that crank out great food. Yes, it is located on East Colfax between a medical marijuana place and a pawn shop or something, but I always feel safe going in and out of the restaurant. About 1/3 of the place is actually a grocery store - something to keep your eyes entertained. The restaurant itself is seriously no frills casual, there is a big projection tv that plays UFC in spanish on fight nights. The service is no frills, prompt, efficient and nice. I love the lady who waits on us most of the time, she's sweet and patiently answers our ignorant questoins. The only thing missing from this place is alcohol... cold beer and pupusas sound like match made in heaven. read more

OH MAN...first place I've found in Denver that makes pupusas and boy howdy were they delicious! $1.25 and super-filling, they were oozing with cheese and not even approaching dry. I also got a burrito and definitely had to cowboy up and finish it. If this place weren't way the fuck out E. Colfax I would eat here everyday. read more

Fried plantains with beans and cheese sooo good! Also tamal de elote (sweet corn) so tasty! Mojarra frita was good. Try the atole (hot sweet corn beverage). Hand made tortillas! This place is legit! read more

Authentic and cheap, so I guess you can't complain too much. The portions were really big. The papusas were pretty yummy. Overall, most of my complaint centered around the food just being too greasy and too salty. Our group of 6 was a little hungover so it hit the spot but I don't think I would enjoy it on a regular night. But the food is so cheap that you're not really giving anything up by checking this place out. read more

First time at a Salvadorian restaurant. It was recommended by my boss, and a bunch of coworkers and I went after work. We got papusas, and they were good! Seating was a bit cramped (it would have been impossible for someone to sit in the seat directly behind me facing the next table), but it was okay because it was only about 4:30 when we got there. Had to look up the words on the menu on my phone. One of my coworkers also got tamale, which he enjoyed. On the food alone, I'd probably give this place a solid 4 stars. But it gets the 5th from the price. Really, really can't beat that value. I'm sure we'll return at some point. read more

Authentic family style salvadorean restaurant. Pupusas are delicious and extremely filling. Plantains are sweet and pair nicely with tamales. Have horchata and fresh fruit juices. Very affordable! read more

The pupusas are the best only! I'm from California, just recently moved here and this is as close as it gets to something back home! I love the store on the side with the salvi goods.being from a salvadorian background I recommend this place only for pupusas and maybe the platano frito breakfast. The horchata can be better y suggest the marañon. The other dishes egh. I'm surprised they do not have panes con pollo but they try :) read more

The food here was fantastic; as close to genuine Salvadoran food as I have had anywhere in the United States. The Chicharron, tamales, and pupusas were cooked to perfection. Moreover, the prices are fantastic. This will definitely become a regular spot for me and my family. read more

Fantastic! We had the combination plate, with pupusas, tamales, chicharrones and plantains, along with a spicy cabbage salad, and it was perfect. We did get there at a good time, about 4:30 on a Saturday. It started filling up at 5, and by the time we left it was getting busy. Highly recommended. read more

Food was bomb. Parking lot was clutch in the back of the restaurant. They had great service too.

Just had lunch here, and was just amazed at the value and service we received at this place. We sat at a booth and within a minute or so, a basket of chips and salsa was delivered. The menu looked like it had a broad selection of combinations and a la carte options, both standard Mexican favorites as well as Salvadoran. However, I came to try the pupusas, so I ordered a questo con loroco, and a bean pupusa. My friend ordered the chicken taco salad with a chicken tamale on the side. Oh and they have Mexican Coca Cola which has real sugar in it as opposed to high-fructose corn syrup. The food was soooo filling and really good. The best part was the bill: $11 for the both of us! I can't wait to go back and try the empanadas de platano! read more

you know it's good when the people eating here are NOT white. Pupusas and fried yucca are amazing. I bet you that you wouldn't be able to spend more than $20 a couple + tip eating here. read more

This place isn't very good at all. Service is slow even for the typical salva restaurant, food wasn't great or appetizing, presentation is poor. I'm from Dallas and decided to try some salvadorean food here in Denver. Very disappointed . Pupusas and yuca were just slopped on a plate . The "Curtido" isn't up to par with other ones I have tried. read more

Decent rice, good beans, decent meat, good prices. Plenty of room for groups, and they have really nice staff. A good place to bring the kids for an authentic El Salvadoran dining experience. read more

I'm no expert on Salvadoran food, but I have made a fair number of soups using only animal parts, and their sopa de res and sopa de pollo are to die for. Bring a bib though because it's an visceral experience, in a good way. My family told me the papusas were wonderful, but I have yet to experience them beyond a few bites. Inexpensive and delicious. That's 5 stars. read more

Food is good on the salty side. Good price. I like the popusas here. The Salvadorian food is good but the "Mexican food" is not original. Good service but they need more waitresses . read more

This is by far the best spot for pupusas in Denver. The staff is super friendly and attentive. The food is spectacular, with super flavorful salsas and fantastic meats. Found this spot about two weeks ago and have already gone multiple times. Highly recommend to anyone craving authentic El Salvadorian food. read more

I came here for the papusas on recomendation and although they were pretty good, Tacos Acalpulco is way better. We also ordered the Caldo de Res and the meat was tough and undercooked. read more

No better place to taste the comforts of my home country in Denver! Try the platanos fritos with a corn tamale and eggs for a typical breakfast. read more

The food is tasty, love the ambience, very latino with a diverse group of customers. Friendly service.

Massive Food Portions for the price. Definitely a grub kinda place ala Benny's. Don't go here looking for fine cuisine and have 2nd choices in mind since some of the food isn't always served that's on the menu. read more

My boyfriend and I came here on a Thursday night we were worried our pupusas would take awhile so ordered those first and later ordered some tamale elote and fried plantains. It was all delicious and authentic, the only wish was that the pupusas had a little more filling. The price was right though! read more

The fried yuca with "pescaditos" is what I regularly order here. It is highly recommend it! It is a small family owned business who always find themselves packed on weekends. They have been in the city for quite some time and for that I support this place! read more

Yelp you led us well. Great pupusas. Very clean and super nice servers. Woo hoo!

Tried this place out based on 4 stars. Big mistake. The place was filthy, serves no alcohol and it took ten minutes just to get our waters. They did cover everything with fresh onions and cilantro, but that didn't make up for the bland food. read more

I'm a repeated customer for life. My family and I go all the time. Best Salvadorian Food in Colorado. You want authentic, delicious, fresh and affordable. I love the little store inside as well. I can buy authentic Salvadorean items. read more

Fast and tasty food. Also, it is easy to eat well without spending very much. The pupusas and fried yucca are quite good. Ambiance ain't fancy. read more

Completely delicious. Definitely not pretentious. Cheap. I take guests here a lot when I want to walk from my house to a tasty place that has something for everyone. Try the pupusas with lorocco and the chicken soup. Did I say this place is cheap? You can be the big spender and buy for the whole table. read more

I found this place mediocre at best. Didn't hate it, but won't come back. Save yourself the trouble.

Honestly if you are not from El Salvador, you will never taste this food like us. Best salvadorean restaurant i ever been in Colorado, Staff very friendly and Humboldt. Is a little far from me but i try to go there twice a week. read more

The food is amazing! Unfortunately thier customer service was very poor the waiter did not try at all to please the customer . I will return for the food but the staff needs to work on their customer service. read more

If at all possible I wouldn't even give this place 1 star. I went there, because of all the great reviews on here, but I was highly disappointed. I went there on a Sunday with an African American friend. As soon as we walked in, we were stared down. Anything he ordered they seemed to be out of. Service was horrible. Place was extremely dirty. The pupusas were not cooked throughly. Food was disgusting. Will never eat there again. The most upsetting part was the racism from all the servers. read more

Really good! I took some friends and family hear because I heard good things and it did not disappoint! I had a papusa con chicharonès , a tamale and yucas fritas and they were all delicious. Prices are also extremely reasonable. Tortilla chips and the salsa were also very good. Decor and Ambience is considerably more comfortable then other Mexican and Central American/Mexican joints in the area. Food was very good and the value was excellent. read more
