The pupusas are better than any other place I have tried but doesn't make them great. The service though , holy crap on a cracker it's so bad. Takes an hour to get your order whether you call it in or just show up. This last time we called it in right when they opened and this time over an hour. Never again. I am a first generation American so my household was always full of standard Salvadoran fare. There are, fortunately, many places in Denver to satisfy a pupusa or plátanos fritos craving... but El Chalate is my top favorite! They do take long to make everything but that's cause everything is made from scratch! And you can taste the difference!! I live far south but at minimum I visit this place twice a year. Sometimes I forget that there is a lot going on along Colfax, east of Quebec. Today, I stopped by El Chalate for some delightful El Salvadorean cuisine. We started our lunch off by sharing a papusa, which could have been a meal in itself. The papusas here are fabulous, hot, thick and savory, served with a tomato sauce and cabbage salad. My entree was an order of their carne guisada, essentially a beef stew with potatoes, carrots, and yucca served with beans and rice. The meal came with a couple of thick, homemade tortillas. After washing my meal down with an order of horchata, I was ready to waddle home and take a siesta. read more

Pupusas you say? El Chalate, you say? Yes, please! Truth be told, I had no idea what a pupusa was... all I knew was that it sounded funny thus, I must try it at least once. I have nothing to compare the pupusas from El Chalate to to determine how good or bad they are, but my mouth says they are awesome and I will continue to listen to it. The cabbage salad (no idea what it's really called in el salvadorian) that comes with the pupusas are crisp, delicious and perfectly complements the hot, ooey gooey cheesy pupusas. Other must try items include crunch beef tacos and plantains with el salvadorian sour cream. Oh, try the maranon drink also, it's refreshing and delicious. Complementary chips and salsa are nice - the salsa seems to be homemade and fresh. As for the restant itself... Ok, so El Chalate is a hole in the wall, but I have special love for hole in the wall restaurants that crank out great food. Yes, it is located on East Colfax between a medical marijuana place and a pawn shop or something, but I always feel safe going in and out of the restaurant. About 1/3 of the place is actually a grocery store - something to keep your eyes entertained. The restaurant itself is seriously no frills casual, there is a big projection tv that plays UFC in spanish on fight nights. The service is no frills, prompt, efficient and nice. I love the lady who waits on us most of the time, she's sweet and patiently answers our ignorant questoins. The only thing missing from this place is alcohol... cold beer and pupusas sound like match made in heaven. read more

OH MAN...first place I've found in Denver that makes pupusas and boy howdy were they delicious! $1.25 and super-filling, they were oozing with cheese and not even approaching dry. I also got a burrito and definitely had to cowboy up and finish it. If this place weren't way the fuck out E. Colfax I would eat here everyday. read more

Fantastic! We had the combination plate, with pupusas, tamales, chicharrones and plantains, along with a spicy cabbage salad, and it was perfect. Authentic and cheap, so I guess you can't complain too much. The portions were really big. The papusas were pretty yummy. Overall, most of my complaint centered around the food just being too greasy and too salty. Our group of 6 was a little hungover so it hit the spot but I don't think I would enjoy it on a regular night. First time at a Salvadorian restaurant. It was recommended by my boss, and a bunch of coworkers and I went after work. We got papusas, and they were good! Seating was a bit cramped (it would have been impossible for someone to sit in the seat directly behind me facing the next table), but it was okay because it was only about 4:30 when we got there. Had to look up the words on the menu on my phone. One of my coworkers also got tamale, which he enjoyed. On the food alone, I'd probably give this place a solid 4 stars. But it gets the 5th from the price. Really, really can't beat that value. I'm sure we'll return at some point. read more

I love the store on the side with the salvi goods.being from a salvadorian background I recommend this place only for pupusas and maybe the platano frito breakfast. Just had lunch here, and was just amazed at the value and service we received at this place. We sat at a booth and within a minute or so, a basket of chips and salsa was delivered. The menu looked like it had a broad selection of combinations and a la carte options, both standard Mexican favorites as well as Salvadoran. However, I came to try the pupusas, so I ordered a questo con loroco, and a bean pupusa. My friend ordered the chicken taco salad with a chicken tamale on the side. Oh and they have Mexican Coca Cola which has real sugar in it as opposed to high-fructose corn syrup. The food was soooo filling and really good. The best part was the bill: $11 for the both of us! My boyfriend and I came here on a Thursday night we were worried our pupusas would take awhile so ordered those first and later ordered some tamale elote and fried plantains. If at all possible I wouldn't even give this place 1 star. I went there, because of all the great reviews on here, but I was highly disappointed. I went there on a Sunday with an African American friend. As soon as we walked in, we were stared down. Anything he ordered they seemed to be out of. Service was horrible. Place was extremely dirty. Really good! I took some friends and family hear because I heard good things and it did not disappoint! I had a papusa con chicharonès , a tamale and yucas fritas and they were all delicious. Prices are also extremely reasonable. Tortilla chips and the salsa were also very good. Decor and Ambience is considerably more comfortable then other Mexican and Central American/Mexican joints in the area. Food was very good and the value was excellent. read more
