El Cerrito was just what I wanted in a Mexican bodega. It had the Cotija cheese and hot sauce that is needed to make the proper summer "Elotes". Elotes are this summer's necessity. I like to char the corn on the BBQ or the stove top but you can still boil them if need be. After they get all heated up, you can lather up some butter or go straight for the mayo. Then you cover the elotes in the powdery Cotija cheese and paprika seasoning. Feel free to add a little cayenne and a squeeze of lime.
Cerrito had a nice big ol' bag of cotija cheese. And the hot sauce collection was incredible and sooooo cheap. I almost wanted to get them all to take them back to NYC and have a beautiful selection for the house. I restrained myself.
There was also a ton of spicy chips. Turns out even the not so spicy chips were tooo spicy, even for this Mexican. Ok, so I am kinda of a weakling when it comes to spice. So taste at your own risk and don't say I didn't warn you.
Also I love that the is a "Virgen the Guadalupe" was hanging in the clerk area. That's Mexican pride for ya! read more
