I'm pretty sure you've never experienced a bar quite like Bar Bero. The name is a play on the Spanish word for "barber," and the place is designed in such a way you feel like you're drinking in a working barbershop. There are even fun barber-related knick knacks hiding in plain sight, such as shaving brushes hanging from a chandelier. Keep an eye out and see what you spot. It's all dimly lit and much more romantic than it sounds. This would be a great date spot. They serve high-end cocktails, but great food, too. We enjoyed the fish tacos quite a bit. The drinks are the star, though, and their list is huge. The menu has two sections, one for classics (think, moscrow mules, mint juleps, old fashioned, aviations, corpse revivers, etc.) and one for house creations. The selection is impressive, but it's the quality that earns them five stars. Everything we tried was expertly mixed, but the consensus fave was the barbero viejo, an old fashioned variation with mole, maple syrup, and a flamed orange peel. It was delicious, very subtle with the sweetness, and potent, too. Highly recommended. Pro-tip: they keep the door locked at all times, even when they're open. If you see people inside, just wait patiently. They check vaccine status and mask status and require you to wash your hands with sanitizer before entering. It's first come first served seating, so we like to show up right when they open, which is supposed to be 7:00 pm. They aren't exactly punctual, though, so don't be surprised if they stay locked up until 7:15-7:30. We love finding fun bars with unique drinks and we hit the jackpot here. From the outside one might walk right by, but once you enter you won't regret it. The decor being one of a old time barbershop where even the chandelier has old shaving brushes hanging from it. Dim lighting contributes to the feeling of old time speakeasies. Each pf our drinks, chosen from a chalkboard wall menu, were delicious and served in upscale old time glasses. From the staff having to let you in because the door is locked to the fenomenal cocktails. This hidden treasure will not disappoint. I had the Bees Knees with lavender honey it was my favorite Bee Knees thus far and I know my Bees. My husband had the Bigote de Luigi (Luigi's Mustache) Gin, cucumber and some other goodness. This cool spot hidden across from Condado plaza is not a place to miss. The name is literally a play on the word "Barbero" which means Barber or Barbershop. It does not disappoint! You are greeted at the door and checked for your vax card, and given hand sanitizer. This is where we met Cyan. I hope I got her name right because she was amazing. The place screams hipster joint, and everywhere you look there is something to see. Nicely lit and pleasantly clean, Cyan helped us through the menu and recommended some great drinks based on our taste. And boy was she right on the money. We were a group of six and none of us got a drink recommended by her that we didn't like. The one drink that blew my mind was El Barbero Viejo. I kid you not, there is no single word to describe this drink. It is their own version of an Old fashioned, locally sourced ingredients, including Rum aged for 8 years. Watching the bartender make it is an experience in of itself! This is definitely a great place for a night out in San Juan, especially if you're a tourist, as both the bartender and Cyan were bilingual. Pricing is just like in the states, so there's no unpleasant surprises. read more

We were bar hopping in la Calle Loíza when we decided to visit this place. My friend forgot her mask at the previous bar and when we tried to come in to El Bar Bero the person a the door was extremely rude. I tried to explain her that my friend left her mask at the previous bar and to see if they have additional mask for their customers, she suddenly tried to stop me while I was explaining and very rudely she shut the door in front of us, brought a mask and gave us the mask with attitude. I told her that I was just trying to explain her the situation and she immediacy said that she is having a long day and doesn't have time for stuff like that. Then after my friend told her that we are customers and that there is no need to treat us like that she proceed to kick us out of the bar. read more

One of the best bars in the area. So this place was very conveniently located just a few steps away from the hotel we stayed at. First you have to give them credit for the name itself ( in spanish it makes much more sense). We came to this place not being sure what to expect, we knew it was early for there to be a crowd but being that we were on vacation showing up here at 6pm at night seemed the "normal time to begin drinking". So its a long space with barbershop chairs as seats and even some small tables for groups. Then you head to the back where a small bar and two bartenders await your orders. Both bartenders were real nice and their drinks were just too amazing. Again when we visited it was really "dead" however we did show up here a bit early. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone in the area. I got the "Vieja del barbero" and let me tell you it was real real nicely made. I will be back to this place on my next trip. read more

Stumbled upon this bar the first night visiting Puerto Rico, and returned every night! Carlos, Rafa, and the other mixologist are incredibly talented and masters of their craft. They are exceptionally knowledgeable in the liquors and cocktails, and their drinks are phenomenal! The environment and vibes at the bar will leave you with an entire experience you cannot find anywhere else. We were treated like locals rather than tourist and felt right at home. The vibe is so adorable, it's an old school barber shop. There are old school heavy client chairs and swing out, a shoe shinning "station" in the back, and a refurbished old horse race thing. There are two menus of cocktails, 10 bar Bero and 10 classics. There a small bites menu and mezcals. We got all our drinks from the bar bero menu, lavender no. 7, gentleman's cut, la vieja, And original Sidecar. Loved all our cocktails and their finishing touches. I was walking near the apartment that I was staying at in Condado and found a place that would change the course of my time in Puerto Rico. Now what intrigued me at first was the name el Bar Bero and wordplay on "The Barber".  So I started to think about my experiences at the barbershop that I go to. When I wait for my appointment I often scan the room looking at all of the connections being made. Your relationship with your barber is special, you sit down to catch up on each others lives, the good and bad things, you talk about interests and annoyances, you share smiles and laughs and unfortunately sometimes tears. During your time in their chair you catch up with a special friend. You walk into el Bar Bero and it's a mix between 'Gangs of New York' meets the eccentricities of a Quentin Tarantino flick. Adorning the wall are pictures of various mustache styles, antique barbershop chairs, an old shoe shine spot in back with subtleties like barbsol cans serving as vase centerpieces for each table. Carlos, the owner, and one of three Carlos's that work there including another bartender and Carlos's father Carlos the chef. A chalkboard on the wall features the regional and seasonal drinks as well as the crème de la crème list of craft cocktails. Before I even ordered my first cocktail 'The Bees Knees', with my spirit of choice gin - I knew what to expect. That same attention to detail that had gone into every nook and cranny of el Bar Bero was about to go into making this drink. After first sip it's moments like this you wish the body could miraculously counteract the effects of alcohol so you could drink all of the cocktails on the list. You can appreciate when a person puts their soul and passion into something and with every one I tried I got an explanation of the drink, the breakdown, and gleam in the eye as "other Carlos bartender" explained to me the intricacies of gin and the different distillery processes. Needless to say I went back every night for the remainder of my vacation. As much as I appreciated the thought and detail that went into the cocktails, and the fish tacos; also eaten every night. I met great people. The berocrew accepted me as one of their own during my time in Puerto Rico and I'm beyond thankful. I look forward to seeing the many special friends again, that I met while sitting in the chair at 'The Barber'. read more

Was going to originally give it 4 stars due to its compact size and dim lighting but the service that was given to us by Carlos , bartender with longer hair and glasses , was the best i had on my trip and the cocktails he recommended and made were just what i needed. We were there mid-evening (8-12) on a Thursday night; the place was quiet with enough time to chat with the bartenders while a steady stream of patrons came in and out. The drinks menu is mix of originals and classic tastes (usually, as the bartenders will explain, adjusted slightly for the PuertoRican palette). The results are wonderful: subtle, refined, and beautifully made drinks; great conversation at the bar if you want it; and a fun, informal cocktail setting.
