Barbate is not on the beaten path. You have to be very intentional to get there. Chances are, if you DO go to Barbate, it is to eat their amazing tuna. And if that truly is your goal, why not go to the restaurant that is associated with their Fishermen's Club?
Inside, the restaurant is more like a taverna... a bar just inside the door, well-worn furniture and lots of photos on the walls. But remember why you came... for the tuna. Focus...
The Tartar de Atún Rojo is just spectacular. The portion is generous (a good thing, too, as my wife kept swooping in for 'just another taste.' The MIni-Ensaladas were a wonderful complement to the tuna, and my wife's Plato Ventresca (tuna belly with red sauce) had the most wonderful flavor! Really, if I lived in the province of Cádiz, I would do an homage to the tuna they serve here.
PS: For dessert, get the "Tocino del Cielo." No, it isn't bacon. Just one will suffice for two! read more
