I don't speak Spanish but the head staff spoke English, service formal and solicitous. Nothing I ate disappointed. Herring appetizer and steak tartare were exceptional, as was the deer tenderloin. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough if you want a formal or romantic (Jacket required, tie optional) setting in a small comfortable dining room. A real bonus is they have a selection of vintage Rioja wines (and others) priced reasonably. Be sure and look at the "Other Vintage Page" before ordering a young bottle when a '56 might be a rare (and similarly priced) treat. I can't wait to return to Madrid, and dinner here once again is one of the main reasons.

Tip: The restaurant opens a bit earlier than most other dinner venues, so you should make a point of arriving early to avoid having to wait for seating. I'm not sure that the food here is 100% authentic German cuisine, but it's unquestionably high quality, well crafted, and very tasty. You can even find some vegetarian dishes on the menu, which I didn't see a lot of the last time I was in Berlin ;-) On our last visit, we shared some fried eggplant, creamed spinach, and a truly exceptional wiener schnitzel that was served with mashed potatoes, carots, and cauliflower. The portion sizes were very generous; so much so that we had trouble finishing everything - not that we didn't try ;-) I particularly enjoyed the fresh, complimentary loaves of bread that they serve here - right out of the oven!

The beer was the best in all of Madrid, way better than the typical Spanish piss style beer (mahou). The service could use a little help, but as soon as you get their attention they are very helpful. One of the best meals I've had in Europe, not just Spain. It's underground sort of, take the steps down by McDonalds and its the first restaurant on your left.

The ribs melt from the bone and to your mouth, the burgers are juicy and meaty, the sausage cooked just right, the beer goes down easy and the desserts are mouthwatering.
