In the nine years since we visited, we have often reminisced how awesome the museum was because it is chock full of cool things. The exhibits are even better now! My favorite area is the tank garden. When we visited, there was a special exhibit about the history of the Volkswagen GTI. We learned so much about how the car was positioned in the market against hot hatches from Opel.

You could literally spend an entire weekend here because around every corner, theres more fun stuff! It's really incredible to see vehicles that are iconic and the museum takes such great care of every artifact. If I could have a gripe, it's a lack of personnel at some of the exhibits you stand in line for. The Concord for example, some parents allowed their kids to run up and down this thing. This is not only a safety issue but they could damage the historical items. When you're done, stop and get a bite as it was tasty but a bit of a wait.

I was excited when I saw it included was a children's museum (called Museum of Pedagogy), since I have a five-year-old in tow. Then, the weirdest thing happened. I would ask someone in the museum where the children's museum was (I showed them the words on my phone since I don't speak German) and they would ultimately point me to another end of the museum. So I'd go from one person to another to another, and ultimately ended up in circles. At one point, a staffer said, "This is a MUSEUM. We don't have kids stuff." I left frustrated and ultimately perplexed about the existence of this mysterious children's museum that was depicted on the maps and museum signs.

Everyone is sure to find something they like since the small museum is filled with a diversity of time periods and styles. It is set in a very old building near the main church. The subject matter goes from the roman involvement in the city 2000 years ago until modern times. I would highly recommend if you are in the area to stop in and take a look around. One tip- when you walk in it appears small, but the 3rd floor is where it opens up and you really appreciate the size of the collection.

The romantic Russian chapel is in the grounds, and talking of romance many people get married in the Hochzeitsturm (the symbol of Darmstadt), as long as a wedding isn't on you can pay to go to the top of the tower and get a view of Darmstadt. In the summer you can even play petanque in the shade of the plane trees. If you're hungry or thirsty there's a small bistro, with an outside seating area in the summer (you don't have to pay to get into the bistro). It's also worth leaving the grounds and exploring the area a bit, as there are some stunning houses with unique architectural features. Basically if you're in Darmstadt, you must go here.

After the factory closed, the private Carl Benz Museum took the opportunity to move into the historic building in 2006. Benz and Mercedes cars from all ages are presented, along with a car that was actually built in this factory. You can get up close to all cars, and take your time while enjoying the rich heritage. A must-visit museum for any automobile fan, and especially at the birthplace of the automobile. The house of Carl Benz is about 1 km down the road (only open on special occasions), and he is buried in the local cemetery.
