ENGLISH: Homemade ice cream in a neighborhood café just five walking minutes from Aachen city hall!…read moreEiscafé Alkuin is the new name of Bubel's Eiscafé, after Werner Bubelewitz sold his business to the new owner. Reopened in May 2016, the new place kept all the furniture, machinery and practice of great homemade ice cream from its predecessor. This place is ideally situated in a quiet side street right next to a kids' playground and benches in the shade of tall maple trees. The ice cream is delicious - the owner prides himself in natural ingredients, and you may run into him buying his strawberries in the nearby REWE market for his strawberry ice cream. Try his flavors "Sahnegrieß-Himbeer", "Marzipan-Karamell" or "Latte Macchiato", and make sure to ask for his homemade strawberry sauce! There is outdoor and indoor seating, prices are moderate, and the owner is very friendly and often finds the time for a little chat, whether about boxing or Paul Auster's novels. This is where the locals meet whenever it's not raining (hard).

Dutch Homemade - Yogurt lychee apricot

This is a review just for their ice cream, which can be summed up into: sweet, too sweet…read more I've tried 4 of their ice cream flavors now, and 2 of them have been a complete bust. The ones I didn't like: - The hazelnut just tasted like sugar, lacking any distinct flavor. - The yogurt lychee apricot tasted like yogurt plus sugar. I could barely taste any hint of lychee or apricot. The ones I thought were okay: - The strawberry was more like a sherbet. - The red velvet did not taste like red velvet, but I didn't find it too sweet at least. The cone they use also tastes like it's riddled with sugar. I actually didn't plan on coming here a second time, except that as I left, I saw a customer with a meringue disc on top of their ice cream, and I really wanted to try that as well. Two tips from me: 1. Turns out the meringue discs are free! How come it's not offered to every customer then? How come there's no sign for it? In any case, I'm letting you guys know now! If you want to spiff up your ice cream for free, ask for that meringue disc. 2. You get a cone + 1 scoop of ice cream for €2. If you want a cone + 2 scoops, it's €4..... Just buy 2 cones with 1 scoop of ice cream each then. I mean, if you don't want to, that's fine. But if they're not discounting the second scoop, then I'm getting a second cone, lol. Service-wise, I had a mixed experience. When I came yesterday, the person scooping the ice cream just did not care. However much they scooped the first time was however much the customer received... As a result, I saw some people with the tiniest scoops (like half the size of my single scoop)! Today, the person scooping the ice cream was a lot more diligent and competent. If the first scoop wasn't a lot, they'd scoop another smaller scoop so that every customer got roughly the same amount of ice cream. I'm sure not everyone pays attention to things like this, but I try to take note of small stuff from time to time. In this case, it's about making sure every customer can leave feeling like they're being treated the same. It's what sets the "I have hands" employees apart from the "I have hands and a brain" employees. Overall, I wasn't impressed with the ice cream, so I probably won't come back here, again.
