He also takes the time to talk through things if you have questions or concerns. Actually, all the staff at Eilers have always been professional and worked efficiently. It can be hard to reschedule appointments here, but that's probably just because they are so popular. Everything seemed great until I refused to have my blood pressure taken. I explained my refusal - that I get white coat syndrome when it comes to vitals, and that I monitor my blood pressure myself and that it is normal. Erin (super lovely office manager) said she'd have to check with doctor who then refused to treat because he required baseline vitals. So I left. In every other medical setting I have experienced, my right to refuse having blood pressure taken has been respected and I have still been treated. I just wanted my teeth cleaned. Oh well. read more

Restaurants, boutiques, music venues: sure. Bars, clubs, spas, even mechanics: no problem. But dentists? Really? Wow Yelp -- you've outdone yourself. Even as a self-proclaimed yelpoholic, finding someone I may as well instantaneously dub the best dentist I've ever had, accompanied by the best staff I've ever encountered, is quite a feat. And to be able to flash my pearly whites and say "actually, I heard about you on Yelp," was definitely a highlight of my yelping endeavors. Yelpers will rejoice at the paperless office. Filling out my information via computer, seeing my x-rays up on the flat screens above my dental chair, and being treated as a friend and equal rather than a plastic practice cadaver was exceptionally refreshing. Dr. Eilers and his staff made me feel quite comfortable, even with a dental dam shoved in my mouth...and *that* is certainly something I never thought I'd say. (...out loud....) read more

I'm living in Portland for a short time and had a really old cavity filling fail, needing replacement. Chose this clinic as it is close to where I'm living. Was able to get an appointment five days after I called. Check in was easy, then was seen promptly by the dentist, who checked the X-ray, numbed the tooth, and replaced the filling. The experience was satisfactory, however, I was somewhat put off by the cost of the visit - $373, less 5% for paying cash. I would recommend this clinic for those with dental insurance, otherwise, not. read more

Let me tell you this. My fiance hates the dentist. He becomes a crazy person whenever he thinks of having to go. He gets snappy and grumpy and yells at all the drivers he can as we make our way over to Dr. Eilers in Hollywood. It's delightful. Once we arrive, he seems slightly calmer, but still nervous. While there, he is on edge, but OK (most of the time). Once we leave, he always says, "That Mark....he's a good dentist." We've spent more hours than I would like fixing up my fiances neglected teeth at Dr. Eilers office, but I always feel OK writing checks for large amounts of money when we leave because my fiance is calmer and in less pain. Erin at the front desk always works with us to find appointments and give us estimates so we can space appointments out in correlation with when we can afford them. I don't want to live in Portland forever, but I sometimes wonder if we will find another dentist like Dr. Eilers when we move elsewhere. Maybe we will stay here just for the dentist. Lord knows I don't need my soon-to-be-husband going to a dentist that might actually make him more insane. :) read more

There is nothing worse than having sensitive teeth at the age of 31, let alone a cavity! Oy! I thought I was falling apart! For about one year I drove past the sign for Eilers Dental...and then I switched employers and my insurance covered Dr. Eilers as "in-network". Dr. Eilers is awesome! He is very professional, knowledgeable, and personable. He explains things thoroughly and give really sound advice that is best for the patient. I have a tooth that was driving me insane...Dr. Eilers and his fabulous team were able to give me some good options...none which cleaned out my checking account. I would HIGHLY recommend Dr. Eilers and his team! *Major bonus is there's always free schwagg...like, stuff you actually will use...like a reuseable shopping bag (yep, how Portlandia), lip balm (call me Napoleon Dynamite already), and reusable coffee-to-go mugs (hearts!) A year and a half ago, I was the bike part of a car vs. bike accident that resulted in my needing A LOT of dental work. To add insult to injury, I'd been in town for less than a month and didn't have a regular dentist to turn to. I found Dr. Eilers and his fantastic team through Yelp, and haven't looked back. With their skill and expertise, I've been through three extractions and subsequent dental implants and two partial crowns,along with other, routine care. Everyone has been great at talking me through the process great during the procedures (think liberal use of local anesthetic), and especially great with my demanding lawyer and the several insurance companies that were involved (seriously, Erin is a saint). I absolutely recommend this team to anyone who has teeth. The Christmas cards alone are worth the price of admission. read more

You are never going to enjoy a trip to the dentist, but this is as close as it comes. The staff is friendly and helpful, everything is state of the art (all the paperwork is on tablet PCs) and the office is... uhh, literally sterile without being figuratively sterile. The doctor treats you like a real person and not just a set of teeth with insurance. He explains what is happening and what your options are in a way that doesn't make you feel like an idiot. They have TVs you control while you are waiting in the chair and sunglasses for when the bright lights of dentistry shine upon you. read more

This place is awesome! I actually went here due to the rave yelp reviews and I'm glad I did. I've been to a dentist probably once in the past 5-6 years due to lack of insurance, so I was expecting the worst. The check in was quick and all digital, the staff seemed friendly and competent, including Dr. Eilers who was quite charming, and they seemed to have top-of-the-line technology (you can watch tv while you're waiting and see your x-rays projected on the screen in front of you). The environment was relaxed, which put me at ease during the process. Although I ended up having no problems, I'd feel good about getting serious dental work done there if i needed it. read more

I wasn't happy with my previous dental clinic and my co-workers told me I need to go see Dr Eilers. I'm glad I did. He has a very practical approach to dental care and did a great job explaining my options when two of my crowns fracked and needs replacement. I absurdly failed to deal with a dental issue last week and spent the weekend in agony w a toothache. After scoping out the credentials of a ton of dentists this office seemed ideally suited for my very complex dental and health history. I sent the requested email Sunday and followed up Monday as soon as they opened. By 10:30 I had answered all questions, including Covid-19 related and was seated in the dentists chair. The doctor who was free to see me so quickly obviously knew her stuff, as I could quickly tell based on decades of dental care in Philadelphia, and I felt relaxed and comfortable in her care. Plus my mouth doesn't open all that far due to an unbelted auto accident so I greatly appreciated her tiny hands. The procedures were explained cogently in advance and the findings and proposed solution made complete sense. I got my painful tooth emergency dealt with and an appointment for a repaired root canal soon. Two thumbs up for the staff and facility. This practice's reputation as among the best in Portland seems well earned. read more

I've had poor luck with this dentist. A front crown replacement took several tries to get a decent looking one because he insisted on using a porcelain crown instead of a PFM crown -- the dark stub of the tooth was (and is) clearly visible through the transparent crown material which is not a problem with opaque metal-based crowns. He refused to explain why he insisted an less-expensive PFM crown (which he was replacing) was unacceptable. What was supposed to be a simple routine filling replacement turned into two weeks of pain. Expect to leave voice mail whenever you call them. [Update] Only hours after I posted this Erin called and wanted to clarify everything I said. I felt like Martina Navratilova in a recent episode of Portlandia. She said Dr. Eilers chose a porcelain crown because I didn't want to see a metal margin. If a PFM is installed correctly, the margin is subgingival so that was never an issue for me. Dr. Eilers simply told me, "I would never recommend a PFM" and I didn't want to argue with him. I suspected that he didn't have much experience with PFM crowns (they aren't common these days) so I thought it would be safer to choose a type of crown he was experienced with. Unfortunately the translucent properties of an all-porcelain crown which is usually an aesthetic advantage turned out to be a disadvantage in my case. I thought they could use opaque material to cover the darkness of the existing tooth but after several tries nothing worked. Erin said that they weren't aware that I was unhappy with this crown. Of course they weren't -- they never asked. Whenever I have gone to the dentist, he or she has always looked at my chart and asked me how the previous work is doing *especially* aesthetic work. Dr. Eilers didn't ask me anything and went straight to replacing my filling. Erin said that my filling replacement was a result of replacing a material with a different material, however that isn't what happened -- I walked in with an amalgam filling and walked out with another amalgam filling. It's possible the original filling had a composite or glass ionomer base to reduce temperature sensitivity but if that's the case, why would he remove it instead of replace it? That would explain some of the discomfort with the new filling. Apparently I keep calling them during when they're at lunch. If you don't want to leave voicemail, don't call them between noon and 2PM. read more

I have mixed feelings about my experience. I went here partly because of all the glowing yelp reviews so I thought I'd add my more nuanced opinion to the mix. On the plus side, this doc has charisma, good bedside manner, and I was satisfied with the work done. The space appears clean, is comfortable and high tech, lots of street parking. On the down side: I found the staff in general to be snobbish and barely civil (in a strained manner). I'd give the staff a 2/10 (and I'm not sure why other reviewers are impressed by a computer check-in) primarily because of their demeanor but also because of the rough handling of my mouth during xrays. Another minus for me was the cost - two to three times as much as nearby dentists. This definitely is a high end place, and I need to be convinced that the quality is as high as the cost. Sometimes you just get a veneer of quality (pun intended). Bottom line, this place isnt for everybody. You might like it if you have great insurance or cost is no concern. I'm going to keep looking. I'm a stickler for customer service and somehow I didn't feel like they valued my business. read more

Best dentist I have ever had. And that is saying a lot- I had Gentle Dental before- Eiler's is the opposite! Mark is friendly, funny, and honest. He explains everything, and listens- he takes the time even when he's busy. His staff (I heart Erin!) is warm and they remember us by name. The office is modern, clean, and inviting. Their Christmas card was hilarious- Mark was mustachioed holding a chicken by a fixie surrounded by the staff dressed in PDX-ness "may your pants be tiny and tight, and your teeth shiny and white" or something like that...love them and love their humor! read more

I've had tons of dental work done in my life and have very sensitive teeth. Finding a dentist like Dr. Eilers was an incredible stroke of luck. My dentist had moved and someone suggested him. He's patient, understanding, always listens to you, and really tries to make your dental experience as pleasant as possible. His entire staff is wonderful - from Erin at the front desk, to all the assistants. If you've ever been afraid of going to the dentist, this is the office for you. 9/7/11 Well, it's a year later and I still LOVE my dentist. He has great chair-side assistants and Erin at the front desk is simply wonderful! Dr. Eilers is very gentle and really cares about making you comfortable and pain-free. Going to the dentist is now a pleasant experience, and believe me, I've had a LOT of dental work done - root canals, crowns (lots!) a bridge, etc etc. You name it, I've had it done. So I know about dental pain, I actually look forward to seeing him. i don't even know where to begin with this review. i have pretty high anxiety when it comes to the dentist, so much that i have put off going for a long time. i have decided that i can no longer put it off...its been long enough. i went in expecting the absolute worst since its been so long, i didn't know what to expect. there are many things that i loved about eilers. the thing i loved the most was the staff. no one made me fee bad or embarrassed and were very comforting (i have had the worst dentists experience which has made me fear going). my whole experience was very pleasant and i really have no complaints. friendly,clean, inviting, technologically advanced, helpful & understanding. thanks to yelp i can say that i LOVE my dentist & for me thats like hell freezing over....a huge achievement. read more

I'm scared of the proverbial dentist. I've avoided going on many occasions. I never thought this would happen, but I love my dentist!!!! In fact I've threatened Dentist Eilers several times telling him that I'm going to make shirts with puff paint that say "I love my Dentist" on the front and "Eilers Dental (503) 281-8110" on the back. You know, I think I still might. His practice is located in a remodeled house (I think he did a lot of the work on it, so dentist/carpenter?) It's super cushy, comfortable, clean and calming. I'm always been a nervous mess when I've visited his tooth drill counterparts in the past. Not with this guy! I've actually had 2 (count it) 2 root canals that Dr Eilers has performed and they have been painless. Completely painless. He listens, puts you at ease, will explain what he's doing if you want, and he's is funny. Dr Eilers seems a bit young for this title, but I don't care. He's earned the "Best dentist ever!" award from me. read more

Dr. Eilers and his team are the best. I always look forward to my appointments there. The place is very hygienic, yet has a warm homey feel. They are always on time, personable and address all my dental concerns. They were able to fit me in once with only a couple days notice to place a temporary crown after an inadvertent tooth chip. Dr. Eiler himself is extremely good at dental work. However, his front desk staff needs to go back to customer service school. They are nothing other than rude and unprofessional with no sense of personal accountability for their errors. This is an update from a previous review. I just want to say that my son's filling is holding strong and no further issues at all with that tooth. When I think about the previous dentist wanting to do a root canal and a crown, I get mad. One thing I didn't add earlier is that my son had been on a very new, nearly experimental med that caused severe dry mouth. Dr. Eilers not only had heard of the med, but knew about it's side effects and gave us some tips about how to prevent some of the damage the meds might cause.
