I love dark chocolate but even at Whole Foods many of the options have ingredients in them I refuse to eat. Rhyme & Reason allows me to fill my guilty pleasure of chocolate without having to sacrifice on quality ingredients. The owner is very nice and friendly and has visited all of the places where she gets the beans for her chocolate. There are so many options from sweet chocolate all the way up to 85% dark chocolate. Some may say that the chocolate is pricey but given all the work put into making it with clean ingredients and the process it takes, it is worth it. If you try to look for something similar, you will see that the price is in the same range if not higher, so do yourself a favor and get yourself some chocolate from Rhyme and Reason. The shop is super cute as well. The decor is very inviting and the way the chocolate is presented almost on something similar to a plate holder with small samples in front is very cute. The cherry on top is that they will sometimes host a chocolate and cocktail pairing event. I still haven't been able to attend due to other obligations but I am on their email list so I can hopefully go to the next one.

As soon as you walk in, there's cocoa smell is in the air! The husband and wife team are awesome in explaining each process and they have lots of free samples!! It's a very, very cute shop and I'd shop here again for special treats.

The location was super clean. There was no lack of any item that you want, or in my case, NEED. During my visit, I was the only customer. The staff...well let's just say one was much kinder and more helpful than the other. I digress. I got two samples and a lesson on popcorn. The samples were the buttery sweet and caramel. I had to make sure that I TRULY needed caramel corn in my life. I did, so that's what I got. The lesson was that the caramel is a different kernel from the others. There is a mushroom and butterfly type kernel (sorry, I forgot which type the caramel was). Who knew? I am guessing there are probably others, but I will leave that concern for true popcorn aficionados. I had a few more errands to run, but I could not WAIT to get home, get comfy with my caramel corn and binge watch something good on the tube! So, no judgement, but I am not a kernel at a time kind of girl, I eat my popcorn like Cookie Monster eats cookies...Om Nom Nom...lol. So I am chopping away until I tried to chomp and I couldn't. Rats! An unpopped kernel. Ok, that's ok, it's to be expected. I continue chomping away and now I encounter 3! Can you see where I am going with this? The popcorn is good, no question, but you will have to go on a scavenger hunt to get all the unpopped kernels to really dig in carelessly and recklessly like I like to do. Don't want my dentist on my back...lol Pop (maybe pun intended) in and see what kind of treats you can take home for yourself! Enjoy!

The chocolate treats are located on the right side of the store. They have prepackaged bundles of treats in the center of the store. I wish I could take one of everything! They weigh your chocolate treat selections from the cases and charge by the pound. They have everything you can think of...peanut/almond/cashew clusters, peanut butter cups, chocolate covered cherries and pretzels. Oh yum! The seasonal items were heavily discounted. I have enjoyed my visits to the store!

But, I do need to advise anyone who is unwaveringly accustomed to the Italian and Portuguese bakeries of New England (at least in the 1980s), and similar places, the pastries here aren't quite at that level. The pastries I tried were a little dense and shriveled, with a slight sour taste (which could've also been due to some uneven baking, erring on the overbaked side). In an apple filled item, the small amount of apples weren't quite soft and sweet enough, as well. Overall, the pastries were nearer to those of a very talented home baker than the polished work of a traditional professional pastry shop. Of course, for this specific region, this will be an enjoyable stop. With that in mind, I'm not surprised there are long lines; it must be very exciting to encounter a shop like this for the first time. There are very few other bakeries making pastries of this type, much less good ones. It's very, very hard to make excellent pastries. But, if you come from a land rich with bakeries, just set your expectations appropriately. Plus, there is the critical difference between New England and North Carolina bakeries: Would you rather have pastries that are sensational from sullen and unpredictably snappish people? ...or pastries that are decent and charming from laid-back and friendly people?
