    The parking.

I generally use the Edison Train Station when heading to NYC. I live equidistant from both the Edison Train Station and the New Brunswick Train Station. The Edison Station gets the edge every time. Unlike New Brunswick, the Edison station has a parking lot outside. I'm sure if you try to park here during business hours you will be ticketed, since the lot requires hang tags. However, if you are going into the city in the evening or the weekends, which is usually my plan, you can park here free of charge. The station itself has a small coffee stand, but it is closed whenever I'm there. I suspect it's only open during weekday business hours. There are also a few benches and some gross bathrooms. They are marginally less gross than New Brunswick though. The real gem inside the station are the power outlets for phone charging. They can be a real life saver. The past few times I've been to the station one of the inside ticket machines is broke. This is a problem when there are only 2 machines inside and 1 outside, that no on seems to know about. Overall this is a better station than New Brunswick, but it certainly pales in comparison to fancier stations closer to NYC.

Add on the fact that overnight parking at the hotel was more than a round trip ticket on the train and the choice was obvious. You don't argue with the system. You simply show up and hope it behaves. Three stars. It did what it was supposed to do, which is more than can be said for many institutions. The trains arrive and depart with reasonable competence along the Northeast Corridor, carrying students, commuters, and the mildly confused. The station sits in a useful place, close to Rutgers University and the hospitals, which makes it feel important even when it looks a little tired. Inside, there is a waiting room with limited hours, as if patience itself has a schedule. The bathrooms...exist. That is the kindest thing I can say about them. Downstairs, a Dunkin' offers coffee that tastes exactly like every other cup you have ever had, which is a small comfort in an unpredictable world. People often wander the platforms like explorers without a map. The signage does not so much guide as gently suggest. Elevators sometimes work and sometimes do not, which turns accessibility into a philosophical question rather than a guarantee. The place is not especially clean, not especially dirty, just lived in. Parking costs money, as expected. Nothing here surprises you, except perhaps how little it tries to. And yet, you get where you are going. Most of the time, that is enough.

Because Amtrak has changed my reservation three times in three months. I booked my trip to Boston early because it was July 3rd and America's 250th so I figured the train may be crowded. Since then, I keep getting canceled trains and car reassignments. I don't understand why as these are trains that run daily. Additionally, the emails give me a link to use in the app if I would like view the changes or make other changes. The links never work! Hence, my ongoing communication with customer service. I found out this last time that I can't access the app until the changes are confirmed. Isn't that the point of the link in the email? At this point I'm ready to book a refundable backup airline reservation as I'm getting leery that Amtrak may just cancel everything at the last minute.

It connects over 500 destinations, including big cities like Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Portland, Salt Lake City, Seattle, Washington, D.C. and more. One time I thought I wanted to arrive in NYC by train from Miami Florida. It's the old romantic movies I had seen creating visions of glamour and excitement as you are welcomed in Penn Station. Even though I was being met by my daughter I anticipated the glamour of arrival. I also remembered my train ride from Florida to New York with my Mother when I was little. I had so much fun and my mother had motion sickness the whole way! As I should have known a trip of that length would be uncomfortable unless you had a sleeping car. The train was crowded too because I decided to attempt this in July. All the kids were out of school and going to theme parks. The bathroom became filthy in time and the children impatient with the ride. The parents impatient with the children. I sat with my headphones music blasting and looked out the window during daylight hours. The experience was miserable on the return trip also because I cried all the way back to Florida. I had plenty of time during that train ride to make a decision and a plan to move back to NYC. The experience is not one I want to repeat. We were held up in Florida by railroad crossings during Florida tropical downpours. In Washington D.C. we were held up by train problems and train traffic trying to get in and out. When I finally arrived my daughter greeted me with a look of chagrin because she couldn't find me. This was pre cell phones. By the time I arrived I was traveling a full 24 hours at least. From then on I took a plane! I'm not saying I wouldn't try one of their travel packages for a short excursion. I do think car travel is still my favorite!

My wife was at work, so I couldn't ask her to remind me. I called MetroPark on April 3rd for a pickup on April 4th and spoke to 'Sid'. He seemed like a nice enough guy although he couldn't seem to either hear or understand what I was saying part of the time. He told me what the price would be for the pickup at our home and for the return trip, I gave him my credit card info and email and he said I would be receiving an email or text confirmation. By the morning of April 4th, I had still not received any confirmation but what I did receive was an almost $400 charge on my card from them. The agreed upon price I got on the phone was $120 each way. I called the main number back at 8:10 am on April 4th, got a different person, told them I had not received confirmation and asked why I was charged so much extra. He was rude and condescending, said it was sent and that I should check my spam email (which I had already done prior to calling), told me the extra fees were for gratuities and other expenses and added that I shouldn't book them if I can't afford it. Keep in mind that this comment comes from a semi-literate working at a taxi stand. Needless to say, I emphatically told him to cancel the service and hoped this would be the end of it. I then called my bank to give them the heads up about these charges as I would be out of the country for over a week. They explained that the charges were still pending, but I at least wanted it to be on record that I contacted them immediately. As I write this on April 13th, the charges were still on my card, so I filed a fraud complaint with my bank and the charges will be taken off. Also, we went with the car service we had previously used and they were honest, charged less, had a clean, new car and were top notch. Even our driver was a pleasure. To summarize, it is much easier to be an honest company who treats their clients with respect and good service than a vampiric parasite who tries to cheat honest people out of their money. I paid $193 for the trip from Metropark to Rumson. They billed me an extra $180 the next day. When I questioned Sid, he was extremely rude. Nevertheless, I tried avoiding writing this review because i respect the working man trying to make a living and supporting his family no matter where one stands on the totem pole in our beautiful society of the good old USA. Back in September I called these guys before any company because of course they are Latino and I wanted to support them being Latino but it turns out, that the original owner sold the business to a bunch of Arab hustlers who have no clue of costumer service or of how to be courteous to women and children. In September of 2014 I called these guys because i was running late from getting home from work & my initial contact with them went fine. They charged my wife $10 witch was fine. The second time I called in the same month they charged my wife $15 dollars & of course my wife questions it & the guy they sent out was rude & intimidating to the point my 2 children were uncomfortable. If anyone knows me it takes a lot for my kids to feel intimidated . Anyhow, i call the dispatcher & ask him what is the sudden change in price about & he said to call back, he would speak to driver. I call back four or five times before they pick up & the dispatcher picks up screaming what, what, what and i tell the guy your kidding me right . He proceeds to tell me how his driver had to leave the train station on the other side of town to get to my house & I ask him what train station and he tells me Metro Park and i laugh and tell him that's literally 2 blocks from me and he hangs up on me. From here on out I started using #Metuchentaxi and these guys are great. They give u a price and when the driver comes he already knows the price and isn't trying to hustle you and they r on time. They only charge me $10. Recently I have been calling Metuchen Taxi and they are constantly busy and their ETA is always over 45 minutes so decide to go against my better judgement and call Melvin Taxi once again and low and behold they are on time and after the dispatcher gives me a price of $10 the driver doesn't know the price when he arrives. He calls it in and can't get through so my wife not wanting the kids to be late gives my son $20 bucks just in case the driver decides to charge $15 instead of the $10 I was told and when the kids get to school they hand the driver the $20 . The driver in exchange tells the kids it's $20 & tells them to get out.... I call them and question the $20 he took from my kids and once again the dispatcher supposedly calls the driver and i call back 3 times and each time he's yelling hello, hello, hello acting like he doesn't hear me. At this point I felt like I had just been beaten for a hundred bucks in NYC on 42nd Street by crackheads in 1986. I can't believe they are being allowed to operate in this area.......avoid at all cost .....avoid less than a mile of BS..

He scanned our ticket and we boarded. The bus was pretty full, so we ended up sitting separately. The above head storage bins are kind of tight, so I had to take something out of my over stuffed backpack to manage to wiggle it in. While my purse sat on my lap. I liked the foot rest and the hook on the handle on the seat in front of me. Trash bags were hung here and there. Looks like they also provided small bottles of water for us, though we had to grab those ourselves. The electric plugs didn't seem to work, but perhaps the ubs plugs in the ceiling did. Our driver was a great communicator. He set expectations so we knew that we had a 20 min rest stop before arriving at Baltimore, and pointed out things to help us to pay attention and to get back to the right bus. He warned us that given current construction that we were sure to arrive later than what our tickets said, and gave us his best eta given the circumstances. Another passenger later commented that the bus bathroom was clean. We kind of ended up being dropped off on a brightly painted bridge in the middle of no where - perhaps on Maryland Ave?, by a bus stop. A short walk from Penn Station.
