Probably not a lot of people searching for this property, but if you get caught (as I did) with the border to Canada closed and you need to spend a night in the small but lovely town of Malta, Montana, this is a great place to stay. Seriously, and trust me, I was as surprised as you may be.
With a population of less than 2000 souls, I was worried that there might not be any hotel options and was seriously considering sleeping in my car, or driving 90 minutes back west to Havre. I drove through town and found four hotels, but three of them looked, from the outside, a little sketchy. This appeared the best, but was also in the best location, so I walked in. The lady working was incredibly friendly and efficiently had me booked in within a couple minutes. She explained the property and gave me directions to both a car-wash and a new restaurant in town. I tried the car-wash, it was good, didn't try the restaurant, was too tired.
I went to my room, and at first remained skeptical. The room smelled a bit stale, but as I checked it out, it was extremely clean, and quite a good size. For you fellow road warriors, you know what I mean when I say "standard size" ... well this room was laid out differently but was actually a little bigger than I had expected. There was a large desk, free WiFi (hmmm, why is it that a little $70 a night hole-in-the-wall hotel in Malta, Montana can offer free WiFi, but the $300 a night Marriott feels the need to charge you an additional $15 a night?), a large flat-screen TV with lots of channels and crystal clear reception, and a huge over-sized sofa chair for reading. There was also an apartment sized fridge with both fridge and freezer, and of course an ironing board and iron.
The bathroom was divided into a small room with toilet, tub and shower, with the sink and vanity being located out in the main room. Again though, lots of space for all your stuff. Sink was mounted a little low, which can be troublesome for an old guy like me, but would have been perfect if I had my children with me.
Last, but not least, the bed was very, very clean, and extra-ordinarily comfortable. I had my best sleep of the week.
I was so impressed I made certain to come here and write this up. Granted, my expectations had been low, but the experience was so good that I just felt they deserved to be recognized somehow. If you are ever in the area, give them a chance. You won't be disappointed.
Oh, and by the way, apparently they have an indoor pool. I didn't have a chance to use it, but it would just put this place over-the-top. I did have a chance to notice the craftsmanship with which my room was built. They didn't import these components from China, and they didn't slap it together in an afternoon. I LOVED the fine attention to detail with which the moldings were cornered, the nail holes filled and the lighting mounted. Too bad you can't find that sort of work anymore. read more
