Your first class is free!
So, now if you read nothing else it's quite alright, you'll pop in for a free taster session and see how you like it yourself.
Me? Well my maiden voyage to Edge Cycle on Leather Lane was AOK. It wasn't quite what I was expecting based on the website, to be fair. I had visions of a 1Rebel-esque type of place and it was more of a average-to-OK nice cycling studio. It was totally fine, clean, there are bikes with instructors.
I signed up for the Spin + Yoga, which had me intrigued. I've been spinning pretty regularly for 1.5 years and though I adore my beloved BoomCycle I was trying to branch out and spread my little cleated wings to some new adventures.
And for most of the time I kept thinking "I should've just gone to BoomCycle."
The 30 minute spin was extremely beginner. I think that had more to do with the makeup of the class (many seemed to be first timers) rather than the instructor, who seemed legit. I would've liked to have done a real class with him but left feeling entirely unenthused about the spinning sesh. We spent most of the class learning about the bike and positions. All well and good for beginners, but again -- I wouldn't have signed up for that. Having a bit of instruction of course is great, but the whole class? Hmmm. On the other hand, if you are new to spinning -- this is a great introduction and I highly recommend you go!
The 30-minute spin was then followed by a 45 minute yoga class. In the same room as all the spinning bikes. An entirely awkward transition took place where the bikes were all scurried around and then everyone bunched up into a dark corner of the spin studio for some yoga whilst chucking their spinning shoes and socks about. Not ideal. I'm not even sure why they offer it. It seemed kind of haphazard almost. The yoga itself was fine, not great. I would not return for it and even thought about leaving early -- and I LOVE yoga. No offense to the teacher, she was clearly trying, it just didn't land for me.
The facilities are OK. There are showers and soap (no shampoo and conditioner) and towels AND shoes are free (very nice). There are plentiful lockers outside at reception and within the studio, but none in the actual changing rooms. There is actually very little room in the changing room. I had to dance around to try to get dressed. The lockers at reception don't have actual locks, I'm unsure why...but there you have it. Maybe bring your own? Or just take your stuff into the studio and you can spy on your locker as you sweat it out and make sure no one steals your things.
Overall -- it's OK, but I'll be heading back to BoomCycle and 1Rebel for my dose of spinning at almost the same price. However, I'm a firm believer that folks should try stuff out, so why not if the first class is free? read more
