As an avid bargain-hunter and fan of vintage fashion, I can often be found rummaging in charity…read moreshops, delighting in my thrifty finds, so I was overjoyed when a swap shop opened nearby. An excellent addition to the east end, Simply Swap is a community initiative designed to reduce waste and recycle unwanted items, and the other amazing thing about it is that no money changes hands - it's all free! Shoppers simply bring along their own unwanted clothes, bags or shoes and exchange them for the same amount of items that previous swap-shoppers have brought in. I have been the swap shop's biggest fan since it opened and I'm constantly amazed by the things I find, which include a Zara mac, countless vintage dresses, vintage brogues and a lovely pair of Topshop heels which originally cost £62! I'm constantly recommending this place to family and friends, and it's well worth a visit to see what you can find, whilst recycling unwanted items. It really is true that one's trash is another's treasure and the swap shop is a wonderful wee trove of treats that allows you to reuse, recycle and rejoice at your finds.

I actually love Wilkies - I've got a few dresses out of here myself (and they were under £50 -…read morebargain!) but I especially love their good old-fashioned customer service. My Gran used to regularly shop here before she fractured her pelvis, but she's been in recently to pick out an outfit for a wedding - and the staff were a massive help, offering to take things downstairs for her to try on, instead of her having to go up and down the spiral stairs, and made what could have been a stressful shopping trip a lot easier!

Admittedly, these clothes aren't aimed towards my age group but even for those who may want to purchase them, I found them a bit expensive. I don't know if I was expecting this place to be along the same lines as Happit, or perhaps more provincial and selling some practical wooly jumpers to help locals brave the elements. It's more designer than the aging fronting of the shop store sign may suggest, and so more expensive. There were a lot of studded jumpers and work trousers downstairs, along wiith a section dedicated to selling insulated jackets and more practical fashions. Upstairs, Wilkies hosts lingerie, bedwear and some designers. The clothing on this floor is more up market and more up to date than that of downstairs. A lot of the clothes up here struck me as being suitable for trendy dinner parties, and some items would certainly suit someone in the process of jazzing up their wardrobe. But with jackets coming in at a cool £150 each, it was hard to see past the price label. This store is undoubtedly handy for locals and is certainly good quality. But if you're looking for something a bit more up to date at a slightly cheaper price, you're probably better going to M&S.
