We booked a non-smoking room for 7 nights, but we ended up checking out a day early due to the gross conditions of the room. As shown in the photos below, the room was in horrible condition. Cigarette burns on the bedding, holes and chips in the ceiling, nicotine stains dripping on the walls, and various stains on the walls. The shower was dirty and had stains on the floor of the tub, the shower head was in bad condition, we did not use the shower during our stay due to how disgusting it was, it was gross . We were on the the second floor, the people in the room next to us were very loud and disruptive all hours of the night. There was a car playing loud and disruptive music past midnight, made it very hard to fall asleep. I could go on and on, but I think you get the idea. I would NOT recommend staying at this hotel. There are much better hotels in the area for a lot less. If I could leave zero stars I would, but I left one. Do not recommend this hotel at all. read more

We booked one night for a quick trip. Location was great. Front desk very friendly. Room was not as pictured on website. There was a smell to the room that was very strong. The wall and door to the bathroom dirty. The coffee pot was missing a part...and dirty so we didn't use. Bed itself was comfortable but pillows were not. Not a good hotel for a family as I was woken at 4am with a knock from our drink neighbor...didn't answer but heard them laughing and being very loud after. read more

I was in NC during freezing cold season so there was no leaf season price gouging. The room looked good, all was well, until I brushed my teeth. I walked away and thought "Are my socks wet?" Sure enough they were. I went back to the sink and felt around and discovered that an 8 square foot section of carpet under the sink was soaking wet. Nothing was dripping and I could see no leaks but the carpet seemed like it had been wet for a while. I tried not to think about toxic mold or the other nefarious creatures slowly evolving on this dark, moist environment. The staff seemed not to know about the leak so maybe it was new and they'll fix it quick. I stayed in a different room a few days later and there was no drama at all so maybe my fear of nighttime assault by mutated bacteria was just my imagination running wild. read more

It's pretty easy to figure this place out. We stayed in autumn when the leaves were changing which is pretty much peak season for Asheville. Most hotels don't have vacancies at this time and even the grungiest of grungy hotels charge top dollar because they know everybody needs a place to stay. There aren't many others along the same road as Econo Lodge that I could say are any better looking than this. We paid $130 for the night. The room stank miserably and the shower was one of those ones that fills up with water because the drain can't keep up. The breakfast was not much to speak of and everything else about the room and such was pretty mediocre. Honestly you should just spend a little extra for a hotel that will probably be nicer. And be sure to make a reservation in advance during peak seasons! read more

The hosts who I assumed owned the place were a woman and man- she had no idea what she was doing and luckily I was there in time for him to come and take over. Booked through Expedia. Checked in and drove around back to our room where we saw a few people outside drinking beers. Took our stuff upstairs and called an Uber to go to dinner. When we walked back downstairs there was a car in front of the beer drinkers room. The women in the passenger seat was putting away a needle and the male driver was smoking Heroin. (Had to google it to be sure). We went to the front desk and the girl immediately knew which room we were talking about. We said that we didn't feel comfortable staying there and wanted to leave. She said they would refund us and thank you for notifying her, and she would be calling the police. We left and found another hotel. Let's start with the good. There is a flat screen TV with cable. Free breakfast has milk, 2 types of cereal, OJ, bagels with grape jelly, small muffins and pastries. The coffee blows, but a Starbucks is a mile down the street. Easy access to the highway and downtown Asheville. Not far from Highland Brewing. Sheets and towels smell like Chlorox. Nice shower head and lots of hot water. Scratch that ... we had lots of hot water the first day, day 2 the water was tepid. OK, now that we've enumerated the good points, let's look at the bad. Smelly room. Dirty to the extent that you don't want to walk around in socks or heaven forbid bare feet. Rust, grody grout in bathrooms. Everything is old and dirty, although the toilet looks new and the bed was quite comfortable. The comforter and blankets were dirty and smelly but sheets were clean. Deadbolt in door didn't work ... Looked like a half hearted repair after the door was kicked in. Walls dirty and need paint. AC worked fine. People in front office were nice. Hard to get into driveway from the road headed east because of traffic coming over a blind hill. Got the room for around 67, which is still paying too much. Some paid over 160 according to the check in guy. Sleep Inn across town is way way nicer at that price point. Network was free, but in my room wifi was 1 mbps down and 0.1 up. When we got there, there was one of the owners on the second floor and he threw some liquid/solid thing down onto the parking landing 15 feet from me. When I looked up, he gave me a look that was not an apology ... more of an attitude look. I don't think it was intentional, but normal people say you're sorry in a case like this. Two of the owners park their BMWs at the front of the hotel in the mornings. Two Beemers means you can afford to replace the blanket/comforter. As mentioned earlier, they look decades old and are nasty. I have no problem with people buying nice cars, but in this case "slum landlord" seems apropos. I'm giving 2 stars for the clean sheets/ towels and proximity to Starbucks, Highland, and Papas and Beer, but I will never stay here again, I'd rather camp in the woods. read more

Rude and exploitive. My college-age son reserved a room at the Econo Lodge on Tunnel Road in Asheville. When he arrived, the clerk turned him away because he's not yet 21. But they refused to return his $75 deposit. NOWHERE on the website does it say you must be 21 to book a room! They told him he could get a refund by going through a laborious process online, but failed to tell him he only had 24 hours to do so. The desk clerk was aggressively unpleasant and the manager Pat was dismissive, making a mockery of the so-called "hospitality" industry. - The inside of the bathroom door had wood chipping off it all along the bottom. - If we'd've put anything on the coat/clothes rack behind the room door, it would have collapsed (the right side of it was already falling out of the wall). - Out of 5 light bulbs across 3 lights in the room, there was only ONE bulb (which was in the double lamp between the beds, but only on the left side). - You could only turn the volume up with the TV remote; the "volume down" button didn't work. - When we went (between 7:30 & 8) for the complimentary breakfast, there were only a few chocolate covered donuts and cinnamon swirls left, some cereal, milk and yogurt. There was no bread for the toaster, and there was no fruit in the bowls. The guy said he would ask his manager who was on her way in to stop by and buy some bread. He told her on the phone that they were out yesterday, too. When I asked about any fruit, he said they had "some apples in the back." (Why weren't they out? This is not a hotel. It's what you might call a "Hell-hole," and I'm being exceedingly generous. From incompetence at the front desk, to the filthy work by housekeepers, this place would need eight promotions to qualify as a cesspool. I got caught there due to booking online, arrived to find a movie shoot in town, and nowhere to find another room. Ended up removing enough filthy linens to make it through one night (I was prepaid Expedia non-refundable for two nights), left before daylight, lost a night's lodging money, had to re-do my itinerary to the next of my travel stops, and was just happy to be out of there without lice, Hepatitis, or whatever else was lurking in the VOLUMINOUS HUMAN BODILY FLUIDS dried and caked into the carpets. DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL!! We paid 300 dollars for one night and only stayed 10 minutes. As soon as I walked into the room it was so nasty I felt like bugs were attaching themselves to me and I'd never be clean again. Floors weren't clean. Stains on the chairs(I won't mention what kind of stains), and a horrible smell. The picture on the website is not what the rooms look like. People walking around outside looked like they were up to no good. If you like the Bates motel atmosphere I would suggest staying there, if not, stay far, far, away. My friends and I weren't there for very long. I'd say we got there in the middle of the night but it was actually just more than an hour before sunrise ..... and then slept over the following night before head out that next morning. So with limited time we had we just looked fwd to a fun busy day in Asheville. We were barely expecting more than just a decent place to sleep and shower .... didn't really care about the tv or the free breakfast/coffee or if the carpet and walls were absolutely pristine. Granted, the price was steep(totaled about $170 per two weekend nites). But not really surprising considering the season (peak fall foliage), the location (just a 5-7min drive from d'town) and the huge musical festival that weekend (hotel/hostel/B&B rooms booked months in advance). All that said, our room was pretty decent. We wanted a comfortable worry-free room in which to sleep and wash up and we got that. No issues w/ the bathroom or shower .... the bath linen fine ..... bed linen was fine ..... what little channel surfing we did turned out fine .... the "paper thin walls" were fine. I give a star not necessarily 'cause of the room but because of the service. My check-in was running very very VERY late. I called ahead a couple times to save my reservation despite my horribly late arrival and the staff each time assured me that I was fine. Upon finally arriving, Tony at the desk recognized my name and all was good. He even let me print out a couple of hiking maps on his computer and printer since I had left my own maps back home. Friendly and easy going. One issue my room had was that one of my friends had a door card that was giving her trouble. No biggie, the desk gave her a new one ..... no fuss, no mess. Upon check-out, I got an appreciative smile and all of us left with a good impression. read more

First they tried to price gouge us when we arrived. I'm from Houston, and I know all about price gouging. When we got there it was during the evacuation for Irma from Florida. I told them I wouldn't play their games and after a while they dropped the $60 up charge. When we got in our room it was like walking into a truck stop bathroom. Non-smoking room wrecked of years of cigarettes. Lamp didn't work. TV made a horrible noise when turning it on. Then I started seeing blood...everywhere. First place was in the shower when I was in it. :( It was splattered all over the curtain. Next it was on both of the bed sheets. Finally it was on the lounge chair. In addition, the bed sheets had cigarette burns on them along with unidentifiable stains. The bathroom threshold was pretty disgusting as well. Nobody should even be exposed to something this disgusting, and potentially harmful. There's no way this hotel should have cost more than $60 a night. Definitely not the $140 we paid. The only reason we stayed is because everything was sold out due to evacuees. It was literally the only room available. After speaking with Melissa, I believe the manager, I got a message left on my phone that sounded like she was shouting at me after she reviewed the pictures I sent. First off she tried to say it was my fault for staying in the room...Then she said they wouldn't refund my money because they confirmed the stains weren't blood? Either they tried to gather that from the pictures by which they are wrong, or they went to the room to look at the sheets. If the latter was the case that means 3-4 days after my check out, and I'm sure many more had checked in they looked at sheets. Get where I'm going? They hadn't been washed in 3-4 days after several other guests had stayed there. No telling how long it had been since they were washed. Absolutely pitiful, I plan on reaching out to the health inspector to review the "96" sanitation rating that the hotel currently has. That's literal impossible. In addition I see fit to report to the state comptroller on price gouging. read more

I wish it was possible to give zero stars. We had a familly reunion in Ashville and rented 5 rooms. All 5 rooms where horrible. The staff is friendly enough and I do feel sorry for then having to work in such a bad establishment. The towels where actually dirty and stained. Almost like somebody cleaned their shoes and then just folded it back. All the bed covers where horribly stained and had cigarrete burned. Multiple hairs in the bathroom. When we complained, they brought us 2 new towels, but when we unfolded the towels a coach roach came out running. It has to be one of the most grossest hotel rooms I have stayed in my life. $131 per room, would have been better off sleeping in my car. The only compensation was 25% discount on 1 room only. To the point-do NOT spend more than $70 a night to stay here! This is the definition of a old, cheap, motel. Good things-staff is reasonably nice, room are clean, AC, Fridge and TV work. Flip side-room is small, walls have holes in them, bathroom fixtures are rusted, shower did not work, drains did not drain, and there is no pool. If you are on a tight budget and like the feel of a circa 1960 motel, this is the place for you. But remember, do NOT pay more than $70 a night!!!! read more

I've stayed at worse places but not by much. When we got into the room, it appeared the chambermaid had had to depart in a hurry - one bed only partially made. Stack of pillow cases piled up near the pillows on the bed. The room had a pervasive odor of mold or mildew that brought on a headache and slight wheezing. The room didn't seem very clean. The vending machine had a dollar bill stuck in it. However it took coins. But then stole money on the second purchase. The plug located on the desk lamp in the room had part of a prong broken off in it. The office was clean but the continental breakfast was strictly that. Mini muffins and mini chocolate donuts. There was a communal 1/2 gallon of juice to share. Some cereal and flabby looking bread. The tv's volume was locked so would not go high enough to hear the tv. Not very economic for the price, considering that The Mountaineers Inn was just across the road and appeared to be charging only$65 a night. read more

Like the other reviewer I had to go to Asheville during the peak leaf season. Now I have traveled all over the world, stayed in hotels from no star to five star, but I would have to say this was one of the worst nights I have ever spent in a hotel in my entire life. And without question, this was the worst value of any hotel I've ever stayed at. I paid $150 for the night - they should be ashamed at such rates. First off, the room smelled awful, I mean really awful. Like 20 years of cigarette smell, and mildew that's never been aired out. There is a window in the room, how about opening that up once in a while and letting some air in ? The sheets may have been washed but were so old and stained one couldn't tell. The toilet seat was, well, disgusting, so again one couldn't tell when it had been last cleaned. The paint on the bathroom walls was chipped, and flaking everywhere. Needless to say - the towels were old and gross. The television had lots of channels, but most were poor quality, fuzzy, didn't come in completely or in a couple cases were actually frozen on one image. The walls were paper thin, so of course I could hear everything my neighbors said and did. To top the night off there was a domestic dispute in the parking lot from about midnight until 2am. Now I realize this is not the hotels fault they certainly could have done something - perhaps ask the people to step off the property or call the police ??? If you have to go to Asheville during leaf season book early, and stay away from Econolodge. . . read more

The rate online is apparently for two people. If you have more, make the extras stay in the car while you check in. The room was fine for the price. It smelled a little smokey, but if you're staying here I don't think you are planning to spend a lot of time in the room. It is in a nice location since the bus is only a couple of minutes away and gets you right into Downtown for only one dollar. Our stay began well. We were checked in by a polite fellow pretty late at night, after a 10-hour day of driving. The room was a little below average for these low-end motels - wonky repairs, doors that don't quite fit, odd smells. The shower couldn't drain fast enough for normal use, so a hot shower comes along with a tepid bath. Before bed, we decided we needed a day to recuperate in Asheville, so we planned to call the front desk in the morning to reserve another night. At 10:30, a call from the front desk woke us up. "Check-out is at eleven!" "Yes, actually, we were hoping... (dead line)" So I set an alarm and went back to sleep. At eleven, I got back in touch with the front desk to ask for the same room for another night. They told us sure, just come by the front desk to pay. The desk clerk was abrupt, but not outright rude. I then received a call on my cell that I had to take. During that call, housekeeping came by - and was very polite - and my girlfriend told them we were staying another night and also that we wouldn't need services that day, just a couple of towels. She told them we'd be down after my call. Then, just as I was getting off the phone, a loud banging came from the door. My girlfriend answered it, once again, and I was surprised to hear her trying to get a word in edgewise with an irate, abusive, very aggressive woman. After my call, my stunned girlfriend explained that the rude and threatening person was from the front desk. It was currently 11:20 - my call had lasted just twenty minutes. I asked my girlfriend if she still wanted to stay here after the manager's hostile behavior. She didn't, so we just drove across the street to Day's Inn - which is only a hair more expense for a much, much better experience. Before we left, I went downstairs to find contact information with which we could leave feedback. The desk clerk, Melissa, refused to give us any such information, claiming she has no supervisor. So instead, I asked to speak with the owner or whoever was ultimately in charge of the property. She introduced us to someone called "Asha," claiming she was the owner, and Asha brushed off our complaints. When I pulled out my phone to record that Asha was the owner, Melissa had no supervisor, and there was no other way for me to leave feedback, Melissa fled to the back and Asha changed her story - she just worked there, she said. Of course she's not the owner. When I asked the name of the person she was with behind the desk, she asked me who I was talking about. "The person who was just there, talking with both of us, about thirty seconds ago." (blank look) "I don't know who you're talking about." Clearly, this place is being mismanaged. We've spent three weeks on the road, staying in similar cheap hotels, and so far this is only the second negative experience we've had. From now on, we'll avoid Econolodge. read more

Smelly? Dirty? Run down? Wandering vagrants? Yes, you can have all these things and more at the Econolodge Biltmore. My room was a malodorous, grimey horrorshow that featured a huge section of wet carpet directly in front of one of the beds. The bedding was dirty and worn, though with a pervasive odor of bleach. The room furnishings were pretty well past their expiration date, too. There was a tv and a refrigerator that both more-or-less worked. There was wireless internet that worked some of the time. The vagrants wandered around the parking lot, apparently in shifts, as I saw different vagrants at different times through the night. I was up frequently to check on my vehicle. Luckily, the AC unit was as loud as a hovering Huey Cobra attack chopper and I never fell very deeply asleep so waking up all those times was easier. The owners had a huge pot of some dish that smelled strongly of curry simmering on a brazier they'd placed on the sidewalk just outside the office. That lent an exotic, foreign element to the premises, if one enjoys the smell of curry. Otherwise, it was just one more note in the symphony of stenches. Breakfast...sorry, I'm laughing here because I can't call it that with a straight face...is definitely worth skipping. The coffee was nothing short of foul and had clearly been made with grounds they'd used for several pots. My travelling companion had a room of his own that lacked the wet spot on the floor but did feature some poorly patched holes in the wall and a bathtub that wouldn't drain. Otherwise, his room had the same aromas and general air of disreputability as my own. Glancing through windows into several unoccupied rooms pointed towards the whole place is like that. read more

The room had an odd smell to it that I couldn't place, the pillow cases were piled on the bed instead of being on the pillows, and the continental breakfast was way below average. My stay at Econolodge was very unpleasant. If I hadn't been so tired from a long day of traveling I would have moved on to a different hotel. The room was filthy and the fixtures were falling apart. The walls were dirty (literally dusty) and had holes all over them. The bathroom was gross. The floor looked like it hadn't been thoroughly cleaned in ages. There was gunk built up in the corners. The kleenex dispenser was covered in rust and only had one tissue in it, and the tp roll was almost empty. The carpet didn't look like it had been vacuumed. The room also didn't feel very secure. The door wasn't heavy and the lock seemed flimsy. Someone could easily kick in the door. The room charge was $125 (the weekend rate) -- such a rip-off. The place is a dump. read more

Stayed there last night- hot August night in Asheville and the ice machine was broken. I asked about the ice machine when I paid and got my room key (card) and was told where it was located. They might have mentioned that it didn't work, but maybe that's just me. My room : smelly - I asked for a non smoking room and I guess they took that as I was not to smoke in it, clearly many others had smoked in it before me. Beyond the smoke smell was a vaguely moldy, mildewy smell - very unpleasant. The overall feel of the room was not clean. The pillowcases had spots on them that made me suspect that they had not been laundered - I tried to put that thought out of my head and wrapped the two pillows I used in my own T-shirts. The shower drain ran so slow I was sloshing around in 4" of water for the duration of it. Staff: Very nice guy checked me in and was apologetic about the ice machine although he was the same person that told me where the ice machine was and didn't mention that it didn't work. Tale of two cities with the woman in the morning. I suspect she is the same person that is mentioned in a couple of other reviews. I will say that I was 10 min. over checkout when I vacated the room but I was packed dressed and ready. I had even opened the door to leave when I took a phone call that was important and as I was completing the call I had the front desk woman yelling at me from the door. She was the same person that I had spoken to on the phone earlier that was very rude and even said that on Mondays they expect people to be out earlier. Who knew? I will stay in any other place in Asheville next time I am here. I have little patience with establishments that figure if they get you for one night then their mission is complete. For $77 I at least want courtesy, clean linens and maybe some ice. read more

Melissa, the lady working the front desk, gave every single person in our party of 6 a hard time about something. She wouldn't let anyone check in until 3 o'clock on the dot. She had a bad attitude about everything & acted as though she was doing us a favor by doing her job. Our room (263) was deemed uninhabitable by us because of an overwhelming mildew smell that gave me a headache, broken tiles in the bathroom that were loose & moved the bathroom, a broken tub stopper, a barely functional shower head, and an overall dirty room. Upon asking for another room, I was turned away from Melissa at the front desk because she was in the middle of another task. She then came up to the room while my fiancée was taking a shower in preparation for a wedding rehearsal & told me they were booked for the night & said she could give me her own personal can of Lysol (as if it were a treasured item). I replied that we would be staying elsewhere & she said I wouldn't be refunded for the night & I would have to bring the keys to the front desk (as if you could pay us to stay there). So, in the end, my fiancée took a $68 shower in the world's nastiest EconoLodge. I've stayed in some nice & some descent EconoLodges across the US, but this is the worst I've ever seen. I stayed here for 3 long nights. Never again!! I had work to do on my laptop but the Internet didn't work In my room...room 115. I went up front and told the lady about the problem. She said she would talk to the owner about It when he got there. I left that morning and got back about 1 PM and It still wasn't working. I went back to the office and ask her If she had told the owners? She said she would talk to them and let me know. She came to my room In about 10 minutes and said they didn't know what was wrong, that they had cable guys putting security cameras. But, when I went up to the area where their office was my laptop worked fine. Yes, you can bet their Internet worked there so they can book rooms and take payments. The lady said I could set up at the office area and do my work. Sure, I want to pay for a room, but not be able to set comfortably and work. Plus, when I got In the shower and turned the knob that makes the water come out the shower head, It came out the shower head and the tub at the same time. Had to get out before I wanted so the tub didn't run over. Plus, If you want America owed this Isn't the place either. read more
