My husband and I are big wine tasters (having lived in the SF Bay Area and made 20+ trips to Napa/Sonoma) and were very excited about being able to do wine tasting in France on a recent road trip. Unfortunately because of some miscalculating with our time we did not get to do as much as we had originally wanted to and thus chose to stop off at the wine school in Bordeaux, hoping to get a good taste of several different wineries and learn more about the region. While the school had tons of wines to choose from their store, there was a very limited tasting of some local wines and little in the way of service in relation to that. The bar itself was very tiny and as Americans we felt a little bit put out by the pourers who opted to cater to the British and Italians instead. I would have liked to talk more to the staff about the region and wines they had as, despite being "dumb" Americans, have a great love and respect of wine and wine culture. We were prepared to buy quite a bit and would have liked some help in making choices, but only walked away with 3 random bottles (there were some French descriptions of the wine, and my husband speaks some French so he was able to decipher some of them, but it was still a gamble on our part). I think next time we are in France we will skip here and go straight to the wineries instead as I've heard they are usually very friendly and more open to educating customers about the region. read more
