this is a widely overrated service. The bikes are never refilled, especially on Fridays. the workers don't give a damn either.

Great when it works. In case of any problems whatsoever - be prepared to be sucked into the mire of third world inefficiency.

I was going to be in the DF for a month and wasn't ready to give up my NYC cycling habit. Ecobici…read moreis a great program but I wanted a little more freedom. I looked into renting but such thing doesn't exist here, oh well. After checking out a few places right in the same corner of Roma, I'm happy I finally wound up at Alterbike. The very friendly trilingual owner (sorry, forgot his name!) set my girlfriend and I up righteously with two single-speed cruiser style bikes, along with baskets, lights, etc. We walked the neighborhood a little bit, had coffee, and when we returned to the shop they were expertly set up for us. The total bill came to around $300USD for both -- about what it would cost for me to rent similar bikes for a month in, say, Los Angeles and now I get to keep them! The owner explained that Alterbikes are made in Mexico so prices are cheaper than imported stuff. Personally I liked the idea of keeping my pesos here. Mind you, these are simple, functional transportation. They're not the bikes you're gonna ride to Toluca or break any speed records with. That said, we've ridden these many times from our place in Escandon down to Coyocan, up to the Zocalo and Tepito, etc and they've performed like champs. Alterbikes guarantees their gear for a year, and though I've had to make a few little adjustments and tightenings along the way, I'm happy to report that after three weeks of hard riding I haven't had to visit the shop again for tune-ups (More than I can say for the far more expensive bikes I purchased back in NYC!).

We had the best time exploring Roman Norte... this is truly an exceptional area in Mexico City with lots of cute coffee, shops, bakeries, variety of foods, and Mexican originals.:) One opportunity for improvement would be getting a microphone or stopping in areas that aren't so loud... At times it was hard to hear the tour guides. But they were very knowledgeable, kind, and fun. They made sure we were very safe on the roads while bicycle riding, too. Anyone can do it! One recommendation for tourists is to bring padded spandex // etc for your bum. The bicycle seats are not in great shape. The bikes are totally safe (I work for a bicycle manufacturer); brakes and chains are intact. However seats are not comfortable, handlebars can be narrow or wide, and helmets are not the best. It would be awesome to get a few upgrades with bike seats and helmet when possible! Thank you very much ladies for making the day so memorable. We will definitely see you next time!! Xoxo

The tour begins at Fontán Reforma Hotel, where their shop is located. You're given a bike that will be adjusted according to your needs, as well as a helmet if you'd like one. My bike was a beach cruiser with a basket, which was ideal since I was dragging along my camera and water. My guide, Danny, was a super enthusiastic, has been biking his entire life and would know the roads with his eyes closed, so needless to say I felt safe even when riding the busy streets. Our first stop was made at the Monumento a la Revolución, where he gave a brief explanation of the background. Then we went on to the Buenavista-Guerrero Corridor, where we locked our bikes and took a walk down the street that features murals that cover the entire building facades. Then we drove through the quiet neighborhood of Tlatelolco, to the Plaza de las Tres Culturas, where he gave a detailed backstory of the massacre as well as the history of the pyramids and the church. After this stop, we set off again in search for more murals all over town. We finished the tour with a light lunch in the marketplace at Plaza Garibaldi before heading back to the starting point. Biking through CDMX, admiring the many pieces of art on the walls, gives you a unique perspective that no other tour will be able to offer you. The biking aspect of the tour is not strenuous at all, so I would recommend anyone to see the city from a different angle and hop on a bike with Poray!

Gabby was a great guide and Danny was riding behind us, corking traffic for us at times. We felt safe on all the paths taken and the city now has great infrastructure for cycling. My only wish is that I'd known that the included 'snacks' were going to be some of the best street tacos I've tasted. I had wolfed down a huge breakfast just before the tour so shared my tacos with family. Had I been hungry, they would have been all mine! This tour is a great way to get oriented with part of the inner-city. I would do it all over again just to get back to that taco stand in that sketchy neighborhood, which was safe during the day. This is a great way to cover a lot of ground and feel the culture. We booked this tour in advance through TripAdvisor.
