I was going to be in the DF for a month and wasn't ready to give up my NYC cycling habit. Ecobici…read moreis a great program but I wanted a little more freedom. I looked into renting but such thing doesn't exist here, oh well. After checking out a few places right in the same corner of Roma, I'm happy I finally wound up at Alterbike. The very friendly trilingual owner (sorry, forgot his name!) set my girlfriend and I up righteously with two single-speed cruiser style bikes, along with baskets, lights, etc. We walked the neighborhood a little bit, had coffee, and when we returned to the shop they were expertly set up for us. The total bill came to around $300USD for both -- about what it would cost for me to rent similar bikes for a month in, say, Los Angeles and now I get to keep them! The owner explained that Alterbikes are made in Mexico so prices are cheaper than imported stuff. Personally I liked the idea of keeping my pesos here. Mind you, these are simple, functional transportation. They're not the bikes you're gonna ride to Toluca or break any speed records with. That said, we've ridden these many times from our place in Escandon down to Coyocan, up to the Zocalo and Tepito, etc and they've performed like champs. Alterbikes guarantees their gear for a year, and though I've had to make a few little adjustments and tightenings along the way, I'm happy to report that after three weeks of hard riding I haven't had to visit the shop again for tune-ups (More than I can say for the far more expensive bikes I purchased back in NYC!).

If you're touring in the area, it's nice to spend a couple of hours cruising and seeing the sights. As a tourists, you need to visit a triangular kiosk to get your account started. After it's setup you can go to the plethora of other drop off stations. For a $5USD nonrefundable deposit, you can catch all the sights on two wheels. Just remember to check in the bike before your 40 free minutes expire, otherwise you start clocking in overages. Hook up your bike to a numbered stand, go up to the station to enter your pin, wait for 'checked in' confirmation. Pause for two minutes to check out another bike. If you have a companion by the time he checks it the bike it'll be your turn to check out. And the clock resets. FYI most of the bike stations are near popular tourist destinations, not near the 'true local' areas.

However, after getting a year-long membership, and using the bike every day to go from De Valle Norte to Condesa, my card stopped working one-day. and I thought nothing of it... I just started using my partner's card (she never used it). We finally called to inquire about a month later and I was informed I owed 8,000 pesos, or almost $400 USD. They claimed I didn't return a bike for 24 hours. It was the exact same route between the exact same two stations I always used... and I waited for the red light, then walked away... and that's what I did every other day the entire year. However, their holder didn't properly register the return on this trip, so instead of taking the blame for faulty gear, they blamed me for "not tapping my card again at the end of the ride"... which nobody ever does. Even after talking through my ride history, how I clearly didn't steal a bike, and how a 1000 peso fee or something would be annoying, but less unbelievable, they stuck with the fine--8 THOUSAND PESOS. I genuinely can't belie how they handled my situation, how much friggin' money they wanted to charge, and I will now consider them one of my 5 least favorite things about the city. 1. Eco-bici 2. Traffic 3.... I dunno, I love Mexico City, but eco-bici can kick rocks.
