This is actually my third time at two different homes that I have worked with Perrin Plumbing…read more Each time I worked with the Owner, Chris Perrin. The first was a condo that needed a new on demand water heater installed and a small 28 gal removed. It had to be inspected per HOA rules. Is passed and the work was complemented on by the inspector. At that Condo we also needed the sink moved from the wall 12 feet to a new counter to face the ocean. This required all new piping and drains and a new dishwasher and air gap install. . At This house we had a poor solar set up and four failing valves to be replaced. I had sent him pic s of problem areas and he came with all proper valves and piping. Plus an extra relief valve, just in case. And in fact, we did need it. Now we are back on track and everyone will get a hot shower. And we added on 2 new angle valves under our kitchen sink that controlled water flow to the refer for ice maker and cold drinking water. So he fixed that while he was here. I had one final question on settings next day and Chris answered my text with a call and clearly answered my question. On a Saturday morning! Now that's a great response to a customer. I want to preface this by clarifying that this review is not about any services received, as,…read moreunfortunately, we never got to that. I first contacted Perrin Plumbing via e-mail on June 20th to inquire about having a tune-up done on my water heater. Chris replied the same day saying that he had work scheduled through the 30th, but if any time opened up he would let me know. I agreed and said that if I had my water heater serviced before then I would let him know. We both did not contact each other after that. On November 13th, I sent Chris a follow-up e-mail saying that I put off my water heater tune-up because Hawaii Energy extended the offered credit into next year, but that I'd like to get it done in the next month if he had any opens. Three days later, he replied apologizing for missing my e-mail and to let me know that he could service my heater in the next month. I replied asking what date and times worked for him, and we agreed on December 1st. I e-mailed on the 19th to ask what time worked for him, and followed-up again on the 23rd to confirm a time. To date, I have not heard back from him. December 1st is in three days and he still hasn't confirmed a time with me, so I decided to go with another plumbing company. I really wanted to use Perrin Plumbing because he has such excellent reviews on Yelp, and I wanted to support a smaller business. I'm sure that he is great at what he does, and he is very pleasant in our e-mail correspondence, but my water heater is acting up something awful and I just can't wait on him. My three-star rating is a reflection of the lack of communication and the long wait time for a response.

After arriving at my home with plumbing parts in hand, Cody from Woody's Plumbing was instructed to provide a quote before starting. Despite having three weeks to prepare the estimate while waiting for the part to arrive on Maui, they quoted $965 for a one-hour job to change a cartridge -- even though they claimed the high price included sourcing the part but I supplied the part myself. They falsely claimed to have sourced it and refused to perform the work until I signed the quote and paid in full upfront. This is predatory pricing and unethical business behavior. Background: There was an existing 35-year-old 'SolaHart' brand solar hot water heater on my Oahu…read morehome roof and it worked perfectly although it was older. Then I noticed it was slowly leaking. My trusted plumber had a look and it was the solar unit leaking and not the plumbing. It needed to be replaced. A split solar hot water heater would be $12k to 14k. Sun King: So a google search told me that Maui based 'Sun King' was the 'SolaHart' company in Hawaii. I gave them a call. They even had the records on the old unit. A new replacement SolaHart unit would be about $9k installed. So I received a quote and all the information about payment, installation scheduling, coordination with my roofing company as the roof needed replacement first. Like any solar system there is a time delay in installation due to ordering and scheduling. It is not like replacing a standard home hot water heater. But it's leaking now: Well these guys deal with this all the time. So they sent over Paul to assess the situation first hand and install a temporary electric hot water heater and disconnect the leaking unit. That didn't work out, but everything else was planned out and installation scheduled for about a month later after the roof was completed. The catch was that there would be no hot water for about a week while the roof work was ongoing. The old unit would have to be removed while the roof was replaced...so no hot water. Anyway eventually Paul and his experienced crew of plumbers, electricians and installers found a way to hook up and wire the temporary heater. It saved us from a week of cold showers. Yes!!! Satisfaction: 5 Stars. While home repairs, remodeling, renovation, on older homes don't always go smoothly. Everything worked out in the end. Bumps in the road may happen but it is their ability to deal with imperfect situations that are the key. Personally, I favor the simple SolaHart type of passive system (vs. the split system) because of the price and reliability. Remember the first one lasted 35 years. Google SolaHart for information. Check their website to see all that they have to offer. They do photovoltaic systems and more: https://www.sunkinghawaii.com/ The installation on top of the new roof was done with care and precision. It was bolted securely to the wood rafters. Maui Headquarters and Tax credits: Despite being headquartered on Maui they do travel to other islands. They had their own crew and truck plus 2 other trucks showed up. Somehow they had the ability to provide full services on Oahu. The office also assisted in providing information on tax credits.
