Gary has done it again! I first found Gary when I wanted to go pastel two years ago. Now, I went to him for an orange/yellow color melt after being pregnant and postpartum from the last session. Gary, of course, did an amazing job again in my hair.

I hate to give a bad review but this is a salon that I would never come back to again. Wrong. Color. Came here to get my hair dyed for the first time ever and I stumbled upon this salon after seeing it on TikTok. Prior to my appt, I messaged Gary explaining that I have black/dark brown hair. I wanted to keep it natural (emphasis on natural) and go for something lighter.. Over text, I sent him a ss that I saved with a lady getting a beige/brown color.The texts covering the screen listed: "-Neutral - Natural- Beige- Ashy Brunette" I also showed it to him again in person. Gary dyed me Blonde. I clearly said natural in message and in person." best colorist in SF" but messed up the color choice. Black to blonde is not natural. Even if you argue that maybe he was looking at the hairdresser in the inspo pic, my results still looked nothing like either. EDIT: I did go back to Gary to give him a second chance to fix my hair back to dark. told him i still really disliked the blonde after i stuck with it for at least two months. Yeah he ended up giving me an Ashy gray. Better than blonde i thought. 3 weeks later my hair was back to blonde again. Did me wrong twice, very disappointed

I had a phone call with the owner who I told I wanted my hair platinum blond. I asked him can he achieve this hair color in one session. He said "of course I can do that no problem. But it will be an all day process" I agreed on scheduling an appointment and the price. (Keep in mind I we had no clue going from black to platinum blond the safest way is to do it in steps not all in one day. Which now I know now from other hair salons which is too late) I used all the correct products and directions he gave with being sensitive with the chemicals etc. I complained and he continued to tell me he's done same day bleaching many times and never had a problem. If that's true I guess this is why he didn't suggest more than one appointment? I don't know. But everyone I've talked to professional and non professional nobody was surprised and all said you never go from black to blond on one day. Always with at least 3-4 visits Anyway he was very helpful and polite when shown my hair falling out and asked for a solution. And we came to a half refund agreement that I walked away still not satisfied with. I'm literally considering going military style haircut which I never in my life thought I'd do. But I have no choice. Hair that is broken at the top with patches on the side and long blond hair is just terrible to look at in the morning. I can't even wear hats to work so my hair looks exactly like this for 8hrs all day everyday. Sucks All in all I will say I was satisfied with the result of the haircut! Yes! I'm just disappointed that he didn't know better to not do this all in one day and didn't inform me to make multiple appointments. At least a WARNING... "hey if you do this all in a day you will have some breakage or a lot of hair will fall out. Just a warning. But it can also be just fine and look great" there was no warning. Everything was discussed as if everything will be just fine. After my first visit he told me to come back for a touch up in 2-3 months and here I am. I'm not detouring people from this salon. I'm informing to make sure you do your own research and ask questions regardless how easy a stylist makes a hair coloring or cut sound.

Gary spent so much care and time into my hair. I hadn't gotten a balayage in over five years and I'm really picky but he gave me such a beautiful color that elevated my natural hair color. It also didn't damage my hair as much as I was expecting my hair still feels healthy and strong. Thanks Gary!

Gary is a hair WIZARD My coworker recommended Gary & I'm so grateful he was able to squeeze me in for an appointment. Super responsive & great customer service! I came in with super brassy hair & Gary created a custom tone for me. The best part is that my hair is still super healthy. I also loved his attention to detail for the haircut. Gary's dad was also a hair stylist so he has a ton of knowledge. Highly recommend!!

the WORST experience I've ever had at a hair salon in my life. When I first came in to see Gary my hair was a strawberry blonde/orange colour. I was wanting to dye it a chocolate brown. I showed him a picture of my own hair when it used to be brown and informed him multiple times that this was the colour I'd like my hair to be again. He assured me he would be able to get me to that colour within 3 hours. First issue: he was working on multiple clients at the same time and didn't take the time to properly assess my hair and it's needs. He put colour remover in a bowl and had his apprentice apply it to my hair for him. I was then left in the chair for FOUR HOURS and was hardly checked in with. Second issue: when the hair colour was being applied.. they were putting it on to my wet hair. I have previously been to hairdressing school and I know when you apply a colour to wet hair it is a toner. So I was very confused and felt alarmed as this wasn't what I wanted or was paying for. Never before in my life has a colour been applied onto my hair while it was wet. I asked the apprentice who was apply my 'colour' if it was a colour or a toner to which he replied and said "umm I actually don't know". The fact the person who was working on my hair didn't actually know what they were doing or what they were applying to my hair... is appalling. Complete lack of communication...extremely unprofessional. after they washed out my 'colour' my hair looked AWFUL. You could still visibly see my regrowth, it was patchy and it was STILL strawberry/orange in colour. My hair looked the exact same, if anything he just made it more dull and less vibrant but it definitely was not brown. Third issue: The apprentice said to me after he gave me an average blow dry "omg you look so much younger" ... i was literally holding back tears because I hated it so much and couldn't understand how he thought this looked good. Gary then said "it looks much better now!" It felt like they kept complimenting me to cover up the awful job they did. I felt so upset but had already spent 6 hours in his hair salon and didn't have the time to ask him to put another colour on. I went home and cried. I was mostly upset due to the amount of money I spent. I texted him before and after pictures so he could see it looked the exact same. He agreed to fix it. When I went in the second time to get it fixed I showed him the exact same photo as I did the first time I was in but he insisted that I never showed him a reference photo. WHICH I DID.. I also texted him my reference photo when I first booked my appointment. He tried to gaslight me into feeling guilty for his mistakes. After telling him for the third time that all I wanted was BROWN hair.. I left his salon with BLACK hair. It is very difficult to remove black hair colour and I couldn't believe a 'colour specialist' would do this to my hair. I could have done a black box dye myself and saved myself the money, time and upset. To avoid him ruining my hair any further I just decided to keep the black hair and avoid further conflict with such a difficult man. It's been over a month since my experience with Gary but I wanted to write a review so others don't get scammed! He wasted my time, my money and didn't give me the results that I paid a lot of money for. I urge anyone considering this salon to avoid it at all costs!!!! I will attach an image of my hair a few days after my first appointment with Gary. You can visibly see that my hair was still orange and you can still see my regrowth! I asked for brown hair, what a joke! I cannot believe I spent 6 hours in a salon to get this result! So awful. I wish I could give zero stars!

I went to see Gary in November for my first time. This month I went back. The results were even better than the last time. Gary is an expert colorist who is also extremely knowledgeable about cuts as well. I appreciate the work he does. And look forward to building a relationship with him in the future.

I walked into Eclipse Salon with virgin, healthy, wavy hair. After six hours, I walked out with an uneven cut, over-processed and hair so damaged I could not get a brush through it without it tangling, and a bleached blonde color that was not at all what I had asked for. I wanted a layered cut and to add some dark pink and blonde while using my original color as a base. I have included what my hair looked like before and the reference picture I showed Gary. I knew something was wrong the moment he took the bleach foils out. He left them in too long and terribly over-processed by hair. However, instead of owning up to his mistake and doing his best to rectify it, for the next few hours and later on the phone, Gary put on a manipulative charade that I was at fault. Here is a list of the excuses Gary gave me. 1. My hair is very tangled (my hair was not tangled until HE over-processed it) 2. I have thick hair (it's literally his job to understand different hair types, and my hair is not that thick) 3. I don't blow dry my hair enough (should not have affected the result) 4. I had too much product in my hair (I had one product in my hair and that should not have mattered) 5. I just needed to wash my hair a few times and then it would look better (this is ridiculous) 6. He was going to cut off all the damage (he caused the damage and he gave me a blunt, uneven cut). After reading all the yelp reviews that said people went back multiple times to Gary and got even worse results, I decided to ask for my money back. Same as what other reviewers said, I was only allowed $250 back. Gary tried to guilt me on the phone, giving excuses and saying he spent a lot of time on my hair. He said his time is valuable but so is mine: I spent 6 hours in that salon while he worked on multiple clients at the same time as me, and I got the worst hair I've ever had. When I went to my new stylist, she thought that I had gotten my hair dyed months ago, because there was barely any color. She agreed that the mistake was with the bleach, and said any stylist would have known when they took out those foils. I've been deep conditioning it every other day for two weeks now, and it's still not back to the healthy quality it was before. The fact that Gary messed up my hair upsets me, but what makes me furious enough to write a review is how he treated me after his mistake. I've never written a review for a hairdresser before, but people need to know the risk when going to this salon. How I was treated was not okay, and I don't want anyone to have to go through that.

Gary is amazing - I got the exact cool ash I was looking for, not too light, not too dark in just one sitting without any damage to my hair. Gary puts immense care into helping you get the exact style and coloring you want and is constantly optimizing and perfecting his craft. From start to finish, my appt took 4 hours 45 min -- fast and efficient. I came in with virgin black hair + bleached tips from a couple years ago and came out with a cool ash bayalage. Previous sessions at other salons took way longer for less great results. If there's any hair stylist out there who can get your hair to match that photo you're looking at it's prob Gary. He also gave me great lob haircut and was so pleasant to chat with throughout the appt. + my friends/bf love my hair so it has passed the ultimate test.

Gary has done my hair for the past five years and he's been there to ensure I look my best for every milestone from my wedding to job interviews to family photos to holiday parties. There's no one else who can get dark, black Asian hair lightened the way he can. Not only is he good at what he does, he's also figured out how to do it quickly! We've gone from 10 hour days in the chair to just under 5 hours *with* all new color, hair cut, keratin treatment, and styling. The products he offers are also great and actually work to keeps your hair healthy and maintain your color. He's also really personable and friendly, takes the time to remember important details about you and your life. It's always a treat to go visit Eclipse Salon and cannot recommend enough!

I started coming to Gary in 2012 when my niece had given herself a botched home color/cut job. Gary was so friendly, and fixed it beautifully - she and I remained customers for years and my husband started coming, too. During Covid, we moved to the East Bay. After a couple of years of home and skipped haircuts, it was time for a professional! Gary immediately popped her mind and we booked our New Year's cut. Definitely worth the drive to the city. Gary made time to give me highlights as well, and we are both thrilled with the results. Went in looking for professional and stylish, to start the year off strong! This is the best hair dye job that I have ever recieved!! The staff is very nice and you can tell they are very professional. I noticed that they always say thank you to one another and treat eachother with respect, which is a great characteristic to have in employees. You can just tell that my stylist, Sohea, is a down to earth woman who genuinely cares about your hair :) The appointment was easy to grab; I messaged on yelp and she asked specific questions regarding my hair that helped her know exactly what products to use on it. I requested a rose gold/ pink balayage and it came out perfect!!! I even got a little layered trim and it was an amazing haircut as well! The total for everything was around $450, which is a reasonable price for the professionalism that I recieved. Regarding parking, I would recommend having someone drop you off and pick you up because that area is 2 hr/ meter my dye job took around 6 hours. Overall, a great experience and Sohea made my hair perfect!

This review is for Gary and Kelly! I first came here in April bored of my previous hair color and wanted to take it up a notch by going more blonde. Gary and Kelly was very honest during our consultation about what they can do and what we should not do with my hair. I knew I wanted to go lighter and any color would wash off my hair within a few weeks. So, we decided to have a little fun and went with a metallic blue/grey (didn't get to take any pics of this but it was gorgeous). My second time here was 3 months later. Again, because I was bored with my hair and felt like I needed a touch up. This time I wanted a lavender hue where it's not too noticeable and it turned out great (pictures added for justice). I'm pretty excited to see the color fade out and the blonde tone that goes with it. The salon generally gets busy so avoid feeling discouraged if multiple people are working on your hair. Gary and Kelly tag-teamed on my hair thru applying the bleach. Kelly finished processing my hair which includes washing off the bleach, shampoo+conditioner, applying my toner and hair mask. Gary dusts/sweeps of my split ends. Kelly styled my hair. Thanks both! I'll be back! read more

This salon curl shamed me! I was rejected via email before having been met in person by a stylist. They told me to research a curly color specialist because "bleach is different on curly hair". Which is not true at all. I'm a licensed cosmetologist trained at Paul Mitchell and can say that for certain. My hair is wavy at best by the way, I sent them a photo in which my hair was curled and made that very clear. I asked them if they only allowed clients with bone straight hair and how that could even be possible? They proceeded to back track and say that they had a lot of stylists leave the salon and lost a lot of clientele. Which means they need the business but just don't want mine. I'm writing this to save any other women or men the trouble, embarrassment and frustration of what I can only assume to be racially profiled away from a salon in SF in 2020. I've been going to Gary for almost 10 years ever since he was recommended to me by my sister. I initially went to him for a haircut, and now go to him for getting my hair dyed with highlights too. He always takes time to make sure he styles/dyes my hair exactly how I want it, and he always exceeds my expectations! I've recommended him to all my friends and family members. This place is the best!! The staff is friendly and Gary is a wonder. I have been going here over 15 years and have always been happy. Gary is an expert in cut and colorings. If your not sure what to do, ask him and he will know the best cut and color for your face. He always fits me in quickly even if he is busy which is fantastic!! If you're serious about your hair then this is definitely the place for you. I had the wonderful pleasure of getting my hair completely transformed by John and I highly suggest you do too! I went from a completely grown out mess of brassy ash brown to seriously the most beautiful icy blonde. I never thought my hair could look so amazing or even lighten this much, so you can only imagine my surprise when he achieved the exact color I've been trying to get hair stylists to do for me for the past year! The process was definitely long but John walked me through every step to ensure that I knew what was happening to my hair. He knows his stuff ladies! He explained the process so well, it was like the class I wish I had in high school. You can really tell that he cares about your hair and the quality of his work based off of the knowledge he gave me on his coloring process and how I should care for my hair to maintain the color. Spending all day here was so worth it and actually quite enjoyable. I literally can't stop grinning because of how happy I am with my results. If you're debating getting your hair done here, just do it. I didn't see one unhappy face leave this salon. read more

MAGIC Gary and Sohea really performed some magic with my hair. I was in need of major color update and fix and decided to come here after researching salons specializing in coloring and Asian hair in the SF area. I filled out the form on their website and I received a consultation with them through text first. I showed them a pic of my current hair, the state of my hair and a pic of what I wanted my hair to look like. They gave me a quote and I made an appointment. Gary and Sohea went through all the steps with the whole process and made me feel super comfortable and at ease through the appointment. It took a total of 7 hours for a balayage, babylights and opalex treatment. Everyone was super nice and friendly and always checked up on me throughout the whole process. My hair ended up looking pretty much like the picture I showed them. Love my new hair and I would definitely recommend this place! Awesome job Gary, Sohea, and Eclipse team! :) read more

For the last few months, I was going back and forth about dying my hair and if I should try something new. I finally decided to pull the trigger and made an appointment with Eclipse Salon, it was easily the best decision I've made all year! I've never dyed my hair before and I was a bit nervous when I got to the salon. Gary and his team were really able to put me at ease and gave me a lot of great suggestions on what to do with my hair. With Gary's guidance, I went with an Ashy Blonde color and also a 4 inch cut. I'm so glad I listened to his suggestion but I can honestly say that I really LOVE my hair. I informed Gary that I wanted my hair to look professional and subtle, which is exactly what he did. His staff were also super friendly and helpful throughout the 4.5 hour process! Gary and his team are professional and very passionate about their work, which is what you need in any stylist! It's no joke that dying your hair is expensive, but regardless I think every cent was worth it. I also appreciate how responsive Gary was over text and loved that he was able to book me an appointment 5 days later. I'm looking forward to coming back in the summer time for another session! read more

My only go to place for my hair. I've tried several salons and I'm always blown away when I get hair coloring services done here. Before getting my hair done I'll always tell my stylist what I want done and it's always done the exact way I envision. He will also let me know if what I want won't turn out good with my hair type but also give me realistic options of what can be done. This is definitely where you can find a hair colorist you can trust. read more

I have naturally dark hair and have him do a blonde balayage for me - it's never brassy and always comes out looking so natural - I get compliments often because it always looks so great. I've had my hair black for the past 10 years and decided to switch it up for a change. Found Eclipse salon after some research and was mesmerized by the color skills this salon has. Look at their Instagram- @eclipsesalonsf Was able to get in within the same week and my appointment was scheduled with Johnny. At first I was a little apprehensive as any girl would be walking into a new salon for a service they haven't had in years. Plus I was frightened about the post results of my hair being damaged from the processing. !!!JOHNNY IS AN ARTIST!!! He was able to lift my black hair (which I had just dyed 4 days before my appointment with another salon) and achieve the look wanted without damaging my hair. Matter fact, he didn't even use bleach. I love the results of my hair...the balayage is so subtle but enough to notice a change in my hair. He really knows what he is doing. My hair is beautiful and I feel so confident in his work that I am already mentally noting my next appointment to go lighter. I noticed some other clients in the salon that were getting their hair colored as well and everyone had beautiful results!! Platinum blonde, rose gold, ash blonde, they do it all!! Update: I went again recently and I just have to say Gary and his team are amazing! I showed them an Instagram picture of the hair I wanted, assuming it wasn't going to turn out exactly like the picture but it did! I am so pleased with my hair and I'm so sad I'm moving away and won't see them again. I told them I would be leaving and they even gave me a card with a gift card and another lady that was pregnant a card and gift card also. They are not only really good with hair but they are all amazing people with great customer service. Also they are right next to a really yummy bagel shop. Thank you so much to everyone at Eclispe hair. I will miss you guys! I wish I could give them more stars lol this place seriously saved my hair after a horrific experience at another salon the day before. As soon as I left the other salon that fucked up my hair I called eclipse hair salon. I was crying historically asking if they had any openings that day (Saturday afternoon) and of course like all the other salons they were fully booked BUT she put Gary in the phone he asked me to text him some pictures and he would see if he could squeeze me in. So I sent him pictures and said he could take me the next morning since my hair would need a lot of attention and time. I really appreciate the honesty and the care he had for me after how j was feeling. That night he calls me again after he wasn't so busy. He just made me feel so much better from having such a bad day. Made me feel kind of special and reassured me that his team would do a good job and he was apologetic about not being in when I was scheduled to come in. I was so thankful and felt that I could trust him already. Walked in everyone was more then nice. They were seriously so awesome. John did my hair with help of Fran (girl with short hair and green high lights. She just had a cute baby girl) and the front desk guy( sorry forgot his name. He had start tattoos on his arm). John and Fran kept making sure i was okay. Offered me water or tea often and Fran even gave me half her bagel. They really made me feel comfortable and really spent there time on my hair. I'm extremely happy with how my hair turned out. Gary's team is seriously the best I've been. I can compare them to LA hair salons, maybe even better. Thank you to Gary and his team. read more

Love that they asked me for photos to better see what I was trying to explain when it came to how my hair currently looked! They did a fantastic job of then being honest with me as to what was realistic and what was a fantasy lol! They then squeezed me in, did a great job of reassuring me once again what it would look like, setting my expectations correctly and sending me on my way once it was all done! I loved my hair. I wish I remember my stylist's name as she did a fantastic job! Anyways, check this spot out - they're great at setting expectations! It's not a SPA like an environment but you get GREAT quality, GREAT service, for an honest price. There's a Peet's right next door so you can grab some caffeine to enjoy too. read more

My review is long overdue however, I need to say Gary is truly blessed with his coloring skills. I had dark brown (and some brassy old blonde) and he was able to turn my hair into the blonde I wanted without further damaging it. They took their time with my hair to make sure it was perfect. Yes, it's pricey but as they say, you get what you pay for. I was very pleased with the outcome. read more

She also helped me out on how to take care of my purple hair afterwards! It came out better than I expected! I love my new hair and it's really healthy now because of Alisa! Gary is a magician! I came in needing a color correction sooooo badly. I didn't think he'd be able to, but within 3 hours he had me blond again and I'm so thankful. Highly reccommend! On September 10, I made a visit to Gary at Eclipse Salon to bleach and color my hair, and it was the worst thing that's ever happened to my hair. I had been looking at his Instagram for a while and was a fan of his work, so I made an appointment confident that he would treat my hair gently and safely. I was wrong. I had scabs on my head from getting burned by the bleach. The first time I washed and brushed it a few days later, I had immediate breakage. My hair was SO gummy all over. Turns out he stripped my hair of the protein it so desperately needs. I texted Gary about how my hair was feeling and he said that it was fine it just needs time to heal. Almost two weeks later, my scalp was still full of scabs. And now? My hair is completely damaged and breaks off whenever a brush passes through it. It's breaking off towards the top of my head and the pieces that aren't broken off are only an inch long. This will take so long to grow back! I have gotten my hair colored many times in the past by other stylists and this has never happened to me. I texted him again to let him know that I was upset and was offered a keratin treatment, but no refund, which is really disappointing especially since I left a nice tip. I refuse to get the keratin treatment as I never want him to touch my hair again. It will take months or even a whole year for my hair to recover from Gary. This is by far the worst hair salon experience I've ever had. Stay away unless you want your hair to be ruined. read more

Went here today for cut and color. I wish I could give Gary 10 stars. He knows all about coloring. He cut my hair like a master. I'm so happy with my hair. It had been a very long time since I had my hair cut and colored. I found Gary on Yelp. He understood exactly what I wanted. He more than exceeded my expectations. I'm very grateful I found him. I've been coming to Eclipse for 3 years now and am long overdue for a review! I used to die my own hair with boxed die all the way through college. I finally decided to make the jump and look for a professional colorist and Gary made all my dreams come true! After 8+ years of damaging my hair using at-home products (brown/red permanent dyes, bleach, and temporary color dyed) with no hair knowledge?I came to Gary to see if I could achieve my blonde goals. My first visit, he color corrected everything and lightened me to a very light honey blonde/brunette to maintain the integrity of my hair. Every visit after that we've gone from ashy blonde to lavender to icy blonde! I love my hair long and with Gary's gentle lightening methods, I can maintain an icy light blonde with healthy and long hair. I usually plan for at least 6 hrs per visit, but the results are so worth it. Bring food and a phone charger! I trust everyone at this salon to do an amazing job and have continually recommended this salon to everyone I know. Note: my natural hair is very dark black Asian hair. Taking it to blonde can be very damaging if done incorrectly! read more

I have been coming here for the past 3 years and have never met such an incredible and talented colorist. Though I am moving from SF, I will have to start making trips back. Gary and the team know color. I personally always get a balayage and prefer a more natural warm look so that I don't come back every month. He does such a good job with my color that I end up coming back every 6 months not out of necessity but out of a willingness to see everyone. My friends on the other hand prefer colors such as silver and purple and Gary does a great job with those as well. I show up with dry hair and leave with my hair more conditioned and healthy than ever before. When you first contact Gary, he will ask you to text a picture of your current hair as well as a photo of what you want. Pro tip: schedule an appointment during the weekday and work remotely from the chair. Gary is also great at damage control; so many people come to him after having horrible color experiences at other salons. He is always able to fix the color and make it even better. read more

Under no circumstances would I recommend Eclipse Salon to anyone. Do NOT go here. It is extremely bad service and results. I was initially excited for my visit to Eclipse - unlike other salons in SF, they don't require a credit card number to hold an appointment. When I called the office, I was redirected to an email address or a phone number which I could contact to make the appointment. I texted them a picture of my at-the-time virgin hair, and they said it would cost $300 for a balayage ombre, tone, and trim, and I would have an appointment with Gary or Sohea. Not only did they leave my hair completely damaged (and the same color it was when I came in) and neglected to trim my hair, but they also acted ridiculously unprofessional in the subsequent exchanges I had with them. Walking in to Eclipse, it's a typical salon - two rows of chairs facing walls of mirrors, and a small waiting area. I was early to my appointment, and was greeted by Gary, who said Tony would be doing my hair. Tony put my hair in foil to bleach it, then moved me to the waiting area for 20 minutes to set it. He took out the foil, washed my hair, and then re-directed me to a different chair. I was surprised that only 20 minutes bleached my hair, and remember that previous times I had dyed my hair took longer (I have done blonde ombre balayage twice before). He painted in the dye, and said it would need to sit for 20 minutes - I have really thin and brittle hair, so it apparently wouldn't take long. The actual process was a bad experience - a lot of the dye was painted directly on my skin, and I later found that my ears and scalp had been dyed. After 20 minutes, I motioned to one of the other workers and said that Tony said it would be done now. He had started working on another customer, and I motioned three more times to him or other workers before he came over, 40 minutes after the dye had been put in my hair. After washing it out and drying it, he took some pictures, curled it, then had me follow him to a back alley where he took more photos of my hair in the sunlight. It looked the exact same to me, but he said that after one wash, it would look the way I wanted it, so I paid and left. The next day, it looked the exact same - coworkers and friends thought I had rescheduled my appointment and didn't get my hair done at all. I contacted the same number that I had made my appointment with, and said I was disappointed in the results, especially since it takes my hair forever to grow out. We texted and called for a couple days - he asked me if I had dyed my hair after going to their salon to make it darker. He said that their salon does not do work of this low quality, and my hair was clearly frizzy and damaged now. He said that Tony was distracted because of family issues, and that he may not return to the salon. I asked for a full refund since they had neglected to trim my hair, there was no color change, and it was super damaged. He offered to $150 out of his own pocket but he wasn't even the owner, and kept emphasizing that he was a middle man (but wouldn't tell me his name). I said it wasn't enough, and I didn't want to get it re-done because they'd have to re-bleach my already damaged hair. He offered to refund $200, and would talk to Tony about whether I could get the full refund. The next day, they messaged saying he could only refund $150 and he needed a textual confirmation that I was not allowed to write any bad reviews. I ended up not getting any refund since they stopped replying, and my hair is still damaged. Other inconsistencies in later communications: 1. He called me Nicole, which is not my name. 2. Whoever manages the phone line refused to tell me their name - they said they were Michael or Gary, but never specified. It seemed like one person, who claimed that they were not the owner, but when I called Gary at the main salon number, he seemed to have the context and sounded the same. 3. They said Tony would not be returning to work, and then that he'd be taking days off with his family, but that he would find them. The next day, he apparently was in the salon and said he did a great job. While family issues are extremely difficult, they are a business and calling out things like this, or replying after hours was not professional. 4. They said initially that policy was for the salon to not do refunds, then said the policy was that I had to go back to the salon to get a refund, if they deemed my hair damaged enough. tldr THE WORST EXPERIENCE EVER. read more

this is an long overdue review... but I went back to gary around july to get my roots touched up. I still had the silver color on my hair (which lasted a really long time) and gary revamped the whole look. The color that we ended up with was so beautiful. I told gary that I wanted a little bit of a purple tone to the silver and he killed it. The eclipse team is great and communication is key! If you let them know exactly what you want, they always will try to get you to the desired color. read more

I have jet black Chinese hair. I had a great stylist who turned me into a platinum blonde. Then months before my wedding, she moved away! NOOOOO! PANIC! Gary to the rescue! Gary and his staff were great at reassuring me that everything would be ok. I'm such a worry wart with my hair but they made it as painless as could have been possible. I had 4 months until the wedding so I went to see him once before the color that I would have before my big day. The first time I was nervous and was then AMAZED that my roots matched what I had from my old stylist almost perfectly. Then came the color the week before my wedding. Gary remembered me and my hair, which means he was able to achieve absolute PERFECTION! I was thrilled! Gary uses all the latest techniques and processes. He used very low heat on my hair but it did not damage it at all. My hair took about 4 hours each time. Just note, that you will not be his only client while you are there (I mean, you are just sitting for hours, he might as well take another client) and he is very good at managing his staff--which helps with washing and blow drying. While some might not like this, you should--it helps keep the prices reasonable. Not saying that going platinum is cheap, but it could be a lot worse. I have so much fun getting my hair done at Eclipse. Hopefully Gary won't be moving away, otherwise I'll have to go through the stress of finding another colorist. Ahhhhhhhhh! read more

This review is way overdue and normally I try not to spread negativity but I don't want others being ripped off as I was. My friend had referred Gary to me, and after reading the reviews on Yelp I felt I could take a leap of faith putting my hair that I hadn't colored in 6 years in his hands. Except it wasn't his hands it was his assistants. I repeatedly told him I wanted him to do my hair he assured me this was the case. The day of my appointment all he did was mix the color and two different assistants proceeded to highlight my hair one placing them higher one placing them lower it was overall a mess. At the end Gary tried to fix my haircut by just rough cutting the perimeter which later resulted in a very uneven choppy look. Off course I didn't realize this at the time all in good faith that they knew better. It wasn't until I came home I realized just how bad the placement was on my hair it looked nothing like balayage because they didn't balayage, they foiled my hair. Anyway I'm over it now found Emi at Morphic salon who managed to salvage my hair but I could've saved the time and $380 from the first time. read more

Ok, if you have lived in SF, you would know that special hair dye/bleach is not that uncommon to find. It just depends on if you are willing to try a place without worshipping the pictures or without reading too much into its reviews. Eclipse Salon...Eclipse Salon what can I say. The hair dye result is good..I mean it is not bad nor it was special. BUT what I remembered (forever) the most is that the chair at the hair washing station is uncomfortable as HELL. I literally was praying "Please let it be done!!!" Felt my neck is going to break. Ok I know you are rolling your eyes now but what about I tell you that the back of my shirt got 75% wet after they washed my hair? Then I had to sit through the hair dying process. And we all know that won't finish in 5 minutes. I actually felt fortunate that I did not bleach my hair or otherwise my shirt would be completely ruined. Ugh. And I went there another time just to give it a second chance and I still do not know why I did that. Secretly I like my shirt wet? I am really surprised that not a lot of people mentioned it in the reviews. Anyway, it is still 3 stars so that means it is good enough I guess? I don't know. I don't like it. Gary, my mistake was trusting just anyone to do my hair and I literally paid the price. I've always bleached, toned, and dyed my own hair for years since i was a teenager and decided to get my hair done professionally for once. I didn't move forward with another hair appointment because I simply don't want to get my hair done by your staff again. I would rather get a refund. And since you keep pressing the issue months later, here's a pic. For the results that I got, I could have went to Sally's and bought some bleach, tone and hair dye for $20. This time I made an appointment with John on a Sunday because it's way less hectic and crowded. Since there were like 60% less people, I felt like they really paid attention to my hair. I had about a 2 inch regrowth and wanted to get it touched up. It was still brassy the first round, so John asked me to come in again to make it lighter and blend in more, free of charge. Each session John applied a toner that made my hair more platinum/white and I love it! Finally feel like Khaleesi/Elsa ya know. There's some small patches of orange left but I think I'll ask them to touch that up next time, because I just don't want to go for a third session at this point. Like usual, my hair is fire emoji (or snowflake emoji??) and soft and perf. They always make sure that your hair is as healthy as possible since bleaching is some serious shit. read more

Unfortunately for the second time I had a very bad experience with this salon. First time with Gary, 2nd time with SOHEA who is his main stylist and turned my blonde hair to almost black while leaving a toner on dry hair and insisting it stays on, despite my begging for them to wash it off. If you care about your hair, do not trust the people that work here as they are very stubborn, manipulative, unprofessional and incapI will have to pay someone else now to color fix it and damage my hair more. read more

I found this place on Yelp and Gary was so helpful, so informative and supportive. There was no point in the entire 6 hours I was there that I felt my hair was not in good hands. I also learned something about my hair -- Asian hair has a lot of red tones in it so it's not easy to get to cooler tones like grey. So not only did the entire team help me with explaining how to get to the grey that I wanted, I feel like I walked away with a newfound sense of knowledge around my hair. I highly recommend reading some other non-4 star reviews before coming here. I was recommended here by an acquaintance. I've been going to San Jose to get my hair done for years, then took a break during Covid and found it hard to motivate myself to drive back down there. It's pretty difficult to find someone in SF who does good work on asian hair. I will say that the result Gary produced was good, not too bad. He was very fast at foiling and the color turned out nice, so I have no complaints about that. However, the process to get there was quite uncomfortable and his workflow is sloppy. My biggest concern with Gary was the way he brushed my hair right after it was bleached. I have always gotten my hair done with women, and maybe since he isnt a woman, he doesn't understand the relationship we have with our hair. While my hair was wet and freshly bleached, he used a regular paddle brush and AGGRESSIVELY brushed my hair. My heart dropped after seeing how much blonde hair was getting pulled out. And he would even try to hide it by covering it with a towel and running to the back to clean out the brush. I have NEVER experienced this kind of treatment before out of my almost 10 years of getting my hair bleached. Gary, please consider using a wide toothed comb and gently detangling hair. Those blonde strands could have been saved. Secondly, when I first sat in the chair, I told him I did not want anything more than 1 inch being cut off. After he brushed off all my hair, he asked if he can cut off 4 or 5 inches. WHAT?! Is this because you just pulled off all my hair so now it looks like it actually needs a haircut?? This actually annoyed me quite a bit. Third. Another review mentioned how the hair washing process was uncomfortable. I get what was meant by this. My neck was very sore, the positioning was not ergonomic by any means, and he was very rough with the washing. It is not like any other hair washing experience I've had, even at a cheap Chinatown haircut place. They're usually quite relaxing, but this experience was just rough all around and left my neck very tired. I also remember water splattering around a lot on my face. And since he was sooo rough with my hair, it ended up being a tangled mess. Thus, he would have to aggressively brush to detangle. At other salons, they keep your hair quote detangled during the whole washing process to make it easier to brush afterwards. Clearly, his workflow is not very high quality. As a result, my hair had a decent color BUT you can tell the ends were very straggly. You can tell there were lots of split ends from the breakage that occurred. I had to trim it again when I got home. The haircut he gave me was quite half-assed anyway. This experience was way too traumatizing and I would not recommend anyone to go here for blonde hair/balayage/babylights type of work. I will be driving back to San Jose for a slightly better price but higher quality work. Honestly, I'd pay like under $150 for this type of experience, including the SF inflation rate (Orange County has extremely high quality hair for like $200 across the board yall, I used to pay $140 for mine in a high-end salon when I lived there and my friends there still pay only this much). I think anything less than $150 would be a fair price for the overall janky-ness of this salon--But I paid 3 times the price, and I think we all deserve a more enjoyable experience. read more

I went here after calling two different places that didn't work out, and I am SO glad I chose this salon. I was going to get something black and blue, and sorta did, but the person working on my hair said my hair was to light and would look terrible when the color came back in, but she still made my hair better than I ever imagined it could be! It was well worth the wait...nice people, great colors, best hair place I've ever been to!!! I would definitely recommend. read more

Gary has been cutting my hair for over 8 years now, and I plan to keep it that way for as long as I live in the Bay Area! While living in SF, I decided to try growing out my hair for the first time and wanted to try something different from a traditional barbershop. I had no idea what look I was going for, but I walked into Eclipse, told Gary my situation, and just let him do his thing. That first haircut got so many compliments that I've actually never asked for anything in particular since then - and yet the results have been consistently good. This is completely different from barbers I've had in the past, who always left me feeling a little nervous beforehand because of their inconsistency. I can honestly say that I've never had a bad haircut with Gary! Despite now living in San Mateo, I still make the drive out to get my haircuts here. I once made the mistake of trying out a new place closer to home, and after hating the results, Gary was able to take me in last-minute and salvage the haircut without a problem. I've also been late to appointments due to the occasional traffic jam, but the team at Eclipse is always friendly and manages to squeeze me into their schedule. I don't think I'll be letting anyone else touch my hair anytime soon. Thanks, guys! read more

It's definitely been hard on hair salons during COVID-19 but I seriously cannot wait until Eclipse reopens when it's safe to. They are literally the only people that I trust with my hair and always know what they're doing in order to keep your hair looking good and healthy. First off, I want to say this is best hair color I've ever had! I've been wanting to get white/platinum blonde hair for a very long time, and was never able to achieve this color in the previous salon that I used to go to. I booked an appointment with Gary, after seeing all of the great results pictured on here. When I got there, Johm ended up doing my hair, but this was fine because I couldn't be happier with the results. He took the time, being patient and helpful the entire time, and explained what he was doing step by step. He went above and beyond to get me my dream hair color, and was great for the entirety of the session. I also greatly appreciate the fact that he took the time to listen to my concerns and to achieve what I've asked for, instead of pushing colors I didn't like just because that was easier (like what my old stylist did. -_- ) Overall, I was ecstatic with the results and would only trust John or Gary with future touch ups/ dye jobs. The staff there were very knowledgable, and gave me suggestions on products for maintenance. read more

I have been going to Eclipse Salon for about 2 years now and I think it's about time for an overall review. Gary and his team make an effort to communicate and understand what you want. With that, they tell you what's the best way to execute your vision. 1st hair appointment: Gary took my recently dyed dark brown/ black hair (from a different salon) to a pastel lavender color in basically a day. -- Pricing was $600 for this app. They offered me tea and refreshments. Those 8 hours flew by. Fast forward to today, I probably made at least 10 appointments with Gary for my hair. I do not regret any of them. Reasons to come here: This salon uses Olaplex Cares for the integrety of your hair Honest opinions/ criticisms Open to different ways of communication (calls/ text) Price quotes are what you expect if you love your hair and don't want to burn it all off I honestly have no idea where those 1 star reviews are coming from. From my first experience here to now, there has not been an appointment where I left disappointed, feeling disrespected, or basically negative. I always left the salon feeling fabulous with my new hair and getting compliments left and right. read more

I discovered Eclipse during a walk on Polk Street on Sunday. I've needed a haircut for a long time. Something made me stop, and walk back to stand and watch in the window for a bit. Then I went inside and Gary greeted me. Before long I had an appointment for today. I have beautiful gray hair that is thinning and fine. My hair was so long I could practically sit on it and my friends were calling me Rapunzel as Senior Citizen. Gary and his staff were efficient and gracious. First I had a shampoo, and comb out . Then Gary and I discussed my hair and my wishes, and he shared his thoughts on the best cut. He then went to work and with a confident expertise, created a simple shoulder-length bob. And then another wonderful man blew out my hair. Gary did a last tour of the cut with his scissors to fine-tune it into perfection. I walked out a new woman, having been given the best in a cut and personal service. I've already made my appointment for my next visit in July. After I saw the reviews on Yelp, I went to this place and looking for Gary. I'm 100% sure this is a big mistake in my life. At first, I told him I want to color my hair and he suggested me to change darker tone because is better to cover my gray hair. so I totally agree what he said and he had a shampoo girl applied the color on my hair. The result came out is horrible. Color was too light and not completely cover my gray hair, also the product they used on my hair is extremely cheap and made my hair so dry!!! Before he blow dry my hair, he spray a lot of leave in condition on my hair cause he try to recovery the cheap product they used on my hair. Also the way he blow dry my hair is crazy, she kept pulling my hair so hard and I felt like my hair will come off!!!! I was very disappointed because their lousy job. I just moved to the area about two months ago, and i have a shorter cut that i have to maintain...anyhow, my hair was looking very shabby. So i did my research on yelp looking for a salon close by to my house and eclipse is just one street from my house. (Perfect!) I called and got an appointment that very same day. Gary was very quick with his cutting and his technique was unbelievable...He was very reassuring the entire time i was sitting in the chair, and he was confident in what he was doing.. Gary is amazing! He worked me into his very busy schedule within a week. He came in two hours earlier than opening to start my hair appointment. At a different salon, I received a poor highlight job and thought no one could fix it. With Gary's expertise, it was easy for him to resolve. He was so receptive to any thoughts I had. He told me to be brutally honest because he wanted to make my hair to look exactly how I wanted it. He provided input on what would look good as well. The color correction using color melt, babylights, and balayage turned out wonderfully and I couldn't be more thankful! Very reasonably priced for great professionalism and kindness! I had my hair cut here a couple of weeks ago. The stylist was very friendly and listened to what I wanted. I left feeling soooo much better about my hair, and it felt so much healthier. My hair had previously been really dry at the ends andI bout a couple shampoos and products that he reccommended and they seem to be helping to.
