Hearts and Halos - by Choice Veterinary Care

Hearts and Halos is a veterinarian company that offers home pet euthanasia services. My husband and…read moreI decided to use them to help us put our beloved little girl, Muffin, down last month. We had the pleasure of Dr. Susan Chao come out to our home on Friday, March 20. We had a 9 am appointment (the first one of the day) and she arrived a little before. She had called me about 15 minutes prior to let me know that she would be arriving within 15 minutes. When she arrived, my husband and I greeted her and had her walk to our backyard, as this was the place I had wanted for our little girl because she loved being in the backyard to sunbathe. Dr. Chao was wonderful at guiding us through the process, explaining every step of the way and allowing us to take our time to say goodbye to Muffin. She also allowed us to give Muffin treats during the process (Muffin's last meal was a chicken nugget from Burger King and pureed chicken that Dr. Chao brought, which Muffin really did enjoy eating). Dr. Chao also did cut a piece of Muffin's fur for us to keep and placed it in a small plastic box, which she put in a small mesh bag and gave it to us as a keepsake. Muffin passed away on March 20, 9:31 am. Dr. Chao gave us some time to spend with Muffin right after and just walked towards the side of the house so that we could have privacy. Afterwards, she placed Muffin in a basket and then we walked with her towards the front of the home so that she could take Muffin with her to eventually be cremated. About two weeks later, I contacted Hearts and Halos to ask if Muffin's ashes were ready for us to pick up (please note that the company can also mail your pet's ashes to you, but we just preferred to pick it up in person). I had a hard time getting ahold of them via telephone, so I emailed the company and was able to arrange for a pickup time. I was told via email that someone was supposed to contact us that day that I had emailed them about Muffin's ashes though... This past Thursday, my husband and I went to Gardena to pick up Muffin's ashes (please note that Hearts and Halos office is now in transition to moving to Hungtinton Beach). When we arrived, an employee came out and gave us a small gift bag, that held her ashes, seeds to plant in her memory and also a small brochure regarding aftercare and additional resources for the grieving process. I do like the box that her ashes came in and also I love the small wooden heart with her name engraved on it and a small halo right above her name. The total cost for these services is $840 (you can pay via check, cash or credit card). You can also have additional items, such as an urn (which cost $60) or your pet's paw print, that will cost extra. If you do not wish to have your pet's ashes back, the cost would go down to $675, in which your pet will be part of a communal process to preserve their ashes and then will be scattered in the company's memory garden. Just as a price comparison, when we had to put down our other 2 dogs at the vet (both of our other dogs were of an emergent case and so we would not have been able to plan for their euthanasian earlier and so we would not have been able to utilize these home euthanasia services even if we had known about them at the time), at minimum, it would have cost $455 if we had made an appointment and had this service done during the day. However, both times we had to rush our dogs to the vet were during after hours and without an appointment, so the cost was around $560, which also did include their ashes. So, these home pet euthanasia services can cost an additional $100- $300 more but we felt it was worth the cost. We did not have to rush and deal with the stress and anxiety of the car ride from our home to the vet and also sit in the waiting room while they prep our dog and then say goodbye to them in the vet's office (where both of our dogs really hated going to the vet). The ability to allow Muffin to be in the comfort of her own home and to have foods that she enjoyed during the process was worth it for us. I highly recommend home pet euthanasia at home if you can afford it. I like to think that this was the much better choice for Muffin and hope that she was happy with her chicken treats right before she left us, keeping her in good spirits than to be stressed and anxious if we had chosen to bring her to the veterinarian instead. Thank you Hearts and Halos for helping us during this process.

Saying goodbye to my beloved kitty was something I had been dreading, especially because she was very skittish and easily stressed, but Dr. Denise made the entire experience as peaceful and gentle as it could possibly be. Her suggestions (like adjusting the environment and approach to minimize stress) made such a difference and helped my cat feel more at ease during the transition. Her assistant was equally kind and thoughtful, offering quiet support and handling everything with such sensitivity and respect. Together, they created a space that felt calm, dignified, and full of care. This is an incredibly difficult decision for any pet parent, but I am so grateful I had Dr. Denise to guide us through it. Thank you for helping my sweet girl pass with peace and love.

I have a very…read morespoiled pug, Zeus (completely my doing), and I warned Bri in advance about his stubborn personality before even meeting her. She immediately reassured me that she was up for the challenge, which put my mind at ease. This was my first trip leaving Zeus with someone unfamiliar, and I was understandably anxious. Bri suggested a meet-and-greet to ensure we clicked and to make sure Zeus felt comfortable with her. On the day of the meeting, I had an emergency and couldn't attend, but Bri went above and beyond by continuing the meeting with my sister. She even offered to set up another meeting if I felt it was necessary--a testament to her thoughtfulness and professionalism. Zeus is also a notoriously picky eater, and Bri went out of her way to adjust his meals to find the perfect balance for him. It's not easy to keep this little pug happy, but her patience and care really showed. She made sure he ate well and even shared updates with me about how he was doing, which was such a relief. While I was away, Bri consistently updated me with pictures and little notes about Zeus throughout the day. This level of communication was wonderful and far beyond what most doggy boarding or daycare centers provide. I could tell that Zeus was happy and well-cared for, which gave me the peace of mind I needed. We had received plenty of recommendations for dog sitters, but I trusted Bri because you simply can't fake the genuine love and care of a true animal lover. Her attention to detail and dedication to Zeus' happiness made all the difference. I can't recommend her enough to any pet owner looking for someone who will treat their furry family member like one of their own!

It felt like I was doing them a favor by allowing them to handle this for me. Marvin handled the details for me and the man, Ruben, who escorted my boy to his cremation was so kind. I trusted my boy would be treated gently through the entire process with them. Ruben came yesterday and left with my boy around 6:30pm. Marvin placed him back in my arms in a lovely velvet bag today around 1:00pm. It's nothing short of a miracle to have him back with me for Christmas. Thank you for everything.

We were told he would have about a week or two to live, so we made the best of our time with Raja. We brought him water wherever he lay down and gave him all his favorite foods until he refused to eat. Today, I received the call I had been trying to avoid for the past few days. My wife called to tell me that Raja threw up blood and wasn't doing too well. She asked me how close I was to being home, and right when she asked, I heard my oldest son scream for her to go to him because something was wrong with Raja. She hung up the phone and then called me back about 3 mins later to let me know that he was holding him, and he wasn't going to make it. Once I got home, I looked in the living room, and my boy was laying there with his tongue out. I looked on Yelp to find someone who could take the body away, and I came across Loving Pets. They were fantastic and showed empathy every step of the way. They were comforting, gentle, and extremely friendly. The whole process was quick, smooth, and clean. They offered urns for the ashes and paw prints, which seemed cool, but I wasn't in the mood. If you ever lose one of your little fury friends I highly suggest calling Loving Pets to take care of the remains.
