LSU is a fantastic venue. There are five different bar areas catering for different types of music…read moreand has capacity for about 3500. Occasionally some special events are on (Feeder and Pendulum recently). The biggest club nights are Wednesday and Friday. Wednesday nights are Hey Ewe, the AU (see what they did there?) night when all the sports teams go out. It's £1.50 a drink and very popular. Friday is FND which is the other big night out. Drinks are more expensive and fancy dress is not the done thing, tunes also become less cheesy. There also weekly Poker nights and Pub Quiz. The Union is one of the few in the country owned by the Student Union body itself. It is active and tries to represent the students as best as possible. During the day advice is available for students and a few stalls are usually found in the piazza. JCs is the public bar which is open daily at regular hours.

Even though I should have a certain bias for Leicester Student Union (the university I attended) I…read morehave to say Loughborough's student union is much better. The bar staff are incredibly helpful and very efficient at what they do, much better than at some other student union's I have been to. Though it isn't the largest SU you will ever go to, it is extremely modern and well designed. They hold some really good nights here which are a lot of fun to go for both students and non-students. They have a good mixture of nights from cheese to some serious rock action! As is typical of student union's drink prices are excellent and you can have a really good night out without putting a hole in your wallet. It is both a good place to start the night before moving onto somewher else or or for staying and enjoying the club nights, highly recommended.

I'm afraid I can't comment on the fan club over the last 7-8 years, but between 1998-2001 I…read morepractically lived there! The atmos was always great - took a while to get going, often with small groups of people getting up and dancing self consciously to one individual track from their favourite band, then sitting down again (check me out - I love 'Faster' by Manic Street Preachers, and can sing along to all the words...) but when you got into the prime time of the evening the DJ's would bring out the big tunes for that individual club night and it would go off. The usual classics - 'Smells Like Teen Spirit', 'Jump Around', 'Intergalactic' would have seas of revellers launching themselves all over the place in a beer fuelled frenzy. The dark dingy decor gave the place the feel of an underground den - a crypt even - where the children of the night hid from the high street herds to hear the hallowed music of the past, present and near future at deafening volumes. But God have mercy on the DJ who played Stone Roses 'I am the Resurrection' and cut it off before the solo! A fantastic line up of club nights - especially Wednesday nights Up The Junction - a spot on 60's night, playing Motown, Northern Soul and British beat groups among others, to generally sparse but well tailored crowds of Leicester's Ace Faces. A quick peek at their website shows its still going strong. For fans of alternative music who feel that a night out should be about a collective experience of people coming together for the music they love and share, rather than a trip to the meat market to cop off with someone who is drunk enough not to care. People who prefer Supergrass to Superclubs, and go for The Jam rather than Cream. Disclaimer - as I said I haven't been since 2001. It may now be shite.

If you're looking for either a glam night out with the girls, or a night out with the guys checking…read moreout the glam girls then Mechu is the place to go. A firm favourite with the cities footballers and high earning business professionals, you can expect to see bottles of champagne all over the place. I'm 26 and the last time I went I felt quite overwhelmed with how many older men were in there. If you're looking for a wild drunken night with a younger crowd then this probably won't be for you unless you go on the student night which takes place on a Thursday. However if you prefer the idea of drinking with a more mature crowd in quality surroundings then it's definitely worth checking out on a Saturday night. Some of the cities best DJ's can be found playing so you'll be provided with the perfect soundtrack all night long.

Although it seems a bit perfunctory to diss Mechu for its VIP-style snobbery and expensive bar…read moreprices (after all, that's the point!), it has to be said that this is not for the likes of people like me who spent most of their formative clubbing days spilling snakebite over their converse in various dark and dingy indie discos. However, having attended the upmarket Mechu on a couple of occasions for work parties, I'm happy to report it's not without its pleasures. It's a swanky bar and relatively spacious, the music from the decent DJs supplying both a mix of dance and urban cuts. The booths are good if you're in a group, but make sure you have a stacked wallet. The thing that generally puts me off - and why I'm probably not the intended audience in the first place - is the 'footballers wives' vibe it gives off. I'm not into my footie, so I wouldn't recognise the much purported cameos from Villa FC players - however, there are lots of glam, slightly orange women 'coyly' approaching the blokes in smart threads at the bar and suddenly I'm humming the tune to that Amy Winehouse tune 'F### Me Pumps' as it could have been written about this place. If you've got the cash and you want to avoid the lower-rent version that is Rococo on Broad Street, then by all means splash that cash here. I'd rather lounge about in Island Bar, thanks.
