I had an amazing experience here last night - from the friendliness of reception to the professionalism of the medical staff - and the only downside I saw was that this free community service is one that more people don't know about. Hopefully this review will help to change that (BFC wasn't even a Yelp entry until I added it! I learned about it on the Brokelyn website). So, yes, I am an overeducated, underemployed working class hero (hey, it's something to be). I moved to New York this summer in, as Johnny Cash and June Carter would say, a fever. While I'm looking for faculty positions (insert standard grumbling about the economy, etc etc), I am working as an editor whose employer does not offer health insurance. Oh, the American dream! I have been feeling pretty under the weather the entire month of January, but didn't go to the doctor because... well, I don't have one because I'm uninsured. Finally, my gross coughing and scratchy voice got to be too much. I looked up free clinics in Brooklyn. Enter the Brooklyn Free Clinic. I was slightly skeptical since the clinic was not on Yelp, and because when anything is "free" it is usually over-used. I imagined long lines, a dirty lobby, and being turned away after waiting in a dingy waiting room for hours with angry receptionists and sneezing children. NONE of this was true. Located in the heart of Bed-Stuy, the Free Clinic is run by the SUNY Downstate Medical Center - by med students and volunteers, and one (amazing) doctor on staff. I arrived promptly at 5:30pm - the clinic is ONLY open Tuesdays from 5:30-8:30pm right now. Their website says that walk-ins are welcome, but warns also that you may not be seen, as current patients sometime wait up to three months for appointments. When I arrived, the very pleasant reception staff told me that it may not be possible to see me tonight, but that if I didn't mind waiting, they would try to fit me in. About half an hour later, they had me filling out paperwork and I officially became a client. I'm not going to lie, the wait is long, and when you have a gross cough like I do, it can be slightly uncomfortable - but it is completely worth it. The lobby is utilitarian - it reminds me of, surprised, socialized medicine (I mean this in a positive way - I am all for socialized everything), and after the local and national news was over, one of the staff popped in a very informative (but also super cheesy, heh) video on STD testing (said video was made before the acronymic switch to "STI" - but was nonetheless effective in conveying its message) for the lobby to enjoy. Anyhow, when you're finally called, you check in with a social worker, a step that is a wonderful asset to a slightly rough neighborhood. She will tell you about all the services that the clinic offers (which include women's reproductive health, mental health, and STI testing), and ask you about yourself. The social worker who interviewed me was very pleasant and helpful. You then have to go back and wait a little while longer. Remember, these are volunteers and medical students, and all the services are free. It was a little before 8pm before I was seen. The 1st year and 3rd year medical students who did my preliminary check up were wonderful. We yucked it up about grad school and they teased me for not knowing exactly where my lungs are (hey, my doctorate is in the humanities!). The 3rd year med student was super helpful in talking to me about general health, as well as in giving a preliminary diagnosis. Dr. Kaiser Islam is the medical director of the clinic, and he sees each patient to confirm diagnoses and to write prescriptions if necessary. Turns out I have an inner ear infection, mild strep, and a mystery cough. But guess what?! The antibiotics that I needed to get - one prescription was free when filled at Rite Choice pharmacy across the street on Fulton, and the other was very inexpensive. If I hadn't found the Brooklyn Free Clinic, I would have let all of this go , and possibly had worse infections. Seriously? Seriously. I cannot speak highly enough of the Brooklyn Free Clinic. It incites me to anger to think of the state of health care in this country, and having had health insurance my whole life until now, I am honored and humbled to have had such a positive experience at the free clinic - particularly when I have had really shitty experiences at expensive specialist clinics in the past. ALL medicine should be like this. I believe if you can pay, then yes, please by all means contribute to your health care. But we all have rough times in our lives, and until we're on our feet, there is always the Brooklyn Free Clinic. Don't be afraid to humble yourself a little - remember, you can always give back when things are on the ups. BFC: Come on in, the water's nice down here.

If you know you need to go ahead of time, I'd highly recommend making an appointment. In total I spent almost 5 hours there -- I was last on the list. The nursing student and Registered Nurse who did my intake were very kind and professional, as were the two medical students who eventually saw me. While in the exam room I was even visited by a sexual health counselor who offered free HIV & Hep-C testing, which I thought was cool at a free clinic. In the end, I got the care I needed, got a prescription, and received my medication from the pharmacy the next day, all without paying a cent (I did pay with my time though). If you don't have health insurance and need to see a doctor, I'd recommend this clinic! Just make sure you make an appointment in advance. And bring a book to pass the time in the waiting room.

Words are unable to describe her dedication to her job, and more than her job; by seeing the way in which she cares for each of her patients and the way in which she does not rest until resolving any complication, you are able to realize that more than a job, it is her persona. Her professionalism is evident, and her honesty and resilience are something every one of her patients should appreciate. Within this facility, I have met with many pediatric doctors and staff; however, after 18 consecutive years of visiting, I can not help but notice Dr. Paik's outstanding devotion to her vocation and her wholehearted commitment to every single one of her patients' well-being. Even though many state the wait is long, I believe that the wait is worth it when you can see results like the ones that Dr. Paik provides. Dr. Bennett has the most perfect combination of professionally, complete respect for his patient; very calmly and kindly explaining each part of the process I've ever come across and since I value comedy when in a vulnerable position like that one but - during little breaks - we had a nice connection of an upbeatness that made enduring some of the worst pain-moments a lot easier to endure. When I left my appointment that day and thought about my experience with Dr. Ryley Bennett - my first thought was: "wow - he has quite an incredible future ahead of him..." I visited QueensWest Health to attend a breastfeeding clinic hosted there by Heather McFadden. The…read moreclinic was perfect for me. It was attended by four moms and their babies, plus two grandmas. The clinic featured a scale to measure each baby's intake during the session. Heather did a great job of helping each mom with her individual problem, which ranged from very painful nipples, to latching problems, to supply issues - providing specific and helpful tips. She took time to present information useful to all moms, while also enabling some informal sharing between us new mamas at different points. The clinic has been going on for about four months at the QueensWest location, and is currently held at 11am on Fridays. The breastfeeding clinic was also my first time at Queens West Health, which is an LIC neighborhood resource that I'm glad I found. It is the home of the general practitioner / family practice of Dr. Savard and Dr. Cole, and also is home to practitioners from other specialties including massage (Earth + Sky and Balance Spa are co-located at QueensWest) as well as nutrition, pediatric speech therapy, and acupuncture, plus a few more I'm forgetting. I don't currently have a general practitioner in the neighborhood, but next time I need one I'll be visiting QueensWest.

I tried a number of them from different friends and none of them gave me the care I expected. I went here because it is in my neighborhood. BIG MISTAKE. They misdiagnosed me twice. I finally went to a doctor in the city and found out my issue was appendicitis. This was waste of almost three weeks of antibiotics, fever and pain based on the care that I received from QueensWest Health and Wellness.

Parcare Medical did COVID testing in my neighborhood at one of the local schools. I went there to…read moreget testing done. It was advertised as free COVID testing for the community. When I went I was asked to give my insurance info. There was no signs anywhere about which insurance they accepted. So I asked the Physicians Assistant who was performing the test if the test was really free. She told me I might get a $50 bill from the lab if they didn't accept my insurance. So I told a volunteer there "I thought this was free." She said it is free, let me get the manager from the lab. "The manager from lab came and told me that I might get a bill, but not to pay it if I get a bill. I know how unpaid medical bills can affect credit so I wasn't going to do that. I said" I don't even want to get a bill". He said "If you don't want to get a bill, then you shouldn't get tested." I left. I later wrote about this incident on Facebook and Whatsapp. A volunteer from this organization convert shamed me said since I am a Jewish convert my word is no good and called me a liar and said I caused a scene there (really professional of her right). I didn't cause a scene I just said I didn't want to recieve a bill and I left. I also saw a volunteer (maybe the same volunteer) from this organization shaming other people who went to this school testing event on Twitter. This organization's workers seem to have no respect for their patients. And they seem to not be following the government's rules about FREE COVID tests. It seems like a scam to me.

Everyone is friendly and very professional. They also have private massages available on the weekends. Not to mention Groupon specials. It is definitely worth checking out. The atmosphere is very relaxed, and there is never a long wait to have any service done. Before I started going there, I passed by so many times and never knew they were hidden in my backyard. They also except all insurances. Urgent Care 7 days a week. I actually enjoy going to therapy. I always know that while I am there, I will have some type of interaction that will put a smile on my face before I leave.

My appointment was at 1130 but I wasn't seen till 12:20, no big deal. I'm used to waiting for doctors. I appreciate the nurse who called me she was very polite. Awesome type of care I received. The room I was waiting in was very clean, see photos. If you're worried about other people hearing you speak with your doctor, then this isn't the location for you. Bathroom Alert: The bathroom was super clean. I like how it was cleaned right after I used it. I am happy knowing I won't get an infection from the bathroom. I like the nurse who helped me when I had to draw a urinalysis. She explained everything in detail. She walked me to the bathroom just in case I had to faint. I greatly appreciate her. I appreciate how patient she was with my responses. I didn't get to see my regular doctor, so I needed to see her PA. I appreciated the type of care I received from her. She is amazing and explained that if I needed to go to the hospital it would be my actual doctor who would be doing the procedure. But unfortunately my doctor is on maternity leave. So I'm just waiting for tests. Either way I'm happy with my visit today. I will continue to see the PA. Thanks NYU.

I was expeditiously checked-in upon arrival and seen by my physician within five minutes! Now that's amazing. It's a wonderful thing to not have to sit and wait hours and hours in the physician's waiting room whilst pouring over old tattered magazines on the coffee tables of yore. Plus, with the convenient NYU Medical App on my smartphone: (1.) my appointment was confirmed a week prior to (2.) I was able to fill out those hundred page forms asking for my life's memoirs with my medical history dating back to my grandparents. So convenient in every way!
