My god-mother's friend suggested King Ahiram. The place is just a take-out place with an adjoining room with tables and chairs where you can have a "sit-down" meal. So we ended up ordering a selection of items. I don't know. I am used to going to Little Arabia for my middle eastern food here in southern California and my favorite place in Brisbane is Nono's and omg.... the food here was kinda on the dismal side. I felt really bad that my parents and god-parents had to sit through a different cuisine which I've been touting as so fabulously delicious only to be faced with really sub-par Mediterranean food. We had falafels, hummus, babaghanoush, kebabs, these crescent pastry things which looked like empanadas -- everything was mediocre at best. The meat was dry, the dips needed more olive oil.... falafels were hard as rocks. Tabouleh was flavorless. I never heard the end of it after the meal, even from my son who is an avid fan of this cuisine. We are definitely going back to Nono's next time.

It's only when you really take notice that you see King Ahiram's name on there. So yeah, until I paid closer attention when I decided to review it, this place was always known to me and everyone I know as 'the Lebanese place'. I guess the point I'm making is that at a place like this the name is unimportant. The food is tasty, cheap, and a bit on the greasy side so it ticks all the boxes for hungry youths. I wouldn't go here expecting a gourmet meal, but for the prices and the convenience it's worth munching on a felafel kebab or cabbage roll. 'The Lebanese place' might not be fit for a King despite its namesake, but it's definitely fit for a starving student.

So, being curious, we decided to stop in, at our own peril, to happily discover the previous owners have returned, turfed out those they sold to, and have really made the place look more Lebanese fast-food fashionable. There's a massive menu board with a broader array of kebabs, meat options and salads, and more much-needed interior seating. However, there's been a big change to the pricing too with a Shish Kebab previously $9.50, now $16, and lacking tabouli...which used to be on every kebab and made a disappointing difference to the Lamb & Beef Shawarma Rolls (aka Doner Kebabs) we ordered today. They lacked flavour that the tabouli added and with just diced lamb and beef, lettuce, tomato, hummus, onion and a squirt of tahini wrapped in a toasted pita bread it just wasn't the same. And this from the original owners and their kebab recipes! Can adding tabouli really be that unprofitable? We're happy that No No's has returned to it's "almost" former self and there were plenty of customers enjoying the Lebanese food. And while the place looks great inside and out, it just wasn't the same that we had come to know and love before the carnage of the sale and buyback. Please consider a return of tabouli.

To our disappointment the new owner I believe is the ruin of NONOS, it is just not the same anymore. There were so many negatives about this place, for a start the hummus was very dry and missing the lemon ingredient, there was no tabouli because he did not make any, the bean salad was not fresh. The sweets cabinet was nearly empty and the cabinet kept with the vine leaves and kibbie were not on display but were all covered in thick plastic bags. If the new owner continues down this road, he will have killed off all the "good will" the previous owners built up. They always worked so hard at their business and they made everything from scratch. NONOS is gone and will never return, I will miss the great food and warm wonderful service and I will always have great memories

On walking into the place I got the sense it was still a work in progress, with some tradesmen on a ladder doing what look like some plumbing work. But it didn't get in the way of me making my order, which was one of their tasty sounding 'Shish tawouk kebab' -- chicken skewer, pickles, lettuce, tomato, onion & garlic mayo in Lebanese bread. I've never had a kebab with pickles on it before, and I have to say -- I'm converted! The tartness of the pickles and crunch of marinated mustard-seeds went well with the garlic mayo (a similar combination that you find in Western hamburgers). The chicken pieces were tender and expertly cooked. Their bread is good quality too -- chewy and strong enough to hold its contents; no fuss no muss. At $8 it's about the same as a yiros across the road (although you get a bigger portion for your money), and as the guy serving me pointed out, it's traditional Middle-Eastern cuisine, as opposed to the Greek take you get at Char Char. They have some really interesting looking items on the menu I'd like to try, such as their walnut labne, chicken fahita and charcoal-cooked whole chicken (served w/ garlic dip & Lebanese bread). They also have an outdoor courtyard (still having the final touches put on but operational nonetheless) where you can take your meal. You can even have a shisha (traditional Middle-Eastern water-pipe used to smoke flavoured tobacco) if you're so inclined.

One of my colleagues suggested Moreish did reasonably priced meals with plenty of gluten free options, so we agreed to give it a try. We settled in to one of the many outside tables and perused the menu. I was impressed by the variety of gluten free meals and struggled to decide what I wanted - not something I usually have a problem with at most café's! I eventually settled on the gluten free pancakes with berries and substituted whipped cream for the yoghurt on the menu and my staple choice of breakfast beverage, a banana smoothie. I found the smoothie to be a great consistency and quite tasty despite being a little overly sweet. I also have to admit I am getting a *little* over every café serving drinks in a jar. It feels very forced and gimmicky. The meals arrived quickly and I was impressed with the fluffy texture of the pancakes. The sweetness was right on point, as were the beautiful fresh berries. Presentation was awesome (as per my photo) and I enjoyed every last mouthful! The only negative was the pancakes fell apart on my fork, and it was tough to negotiate them into my mouth.. but to be honest that's being pretty nit-picky. My fellow diners were less than impressed with their eggs Benedict - the presence of avocado was praised but according to one of the boys, the sizing was just not big enough for his appetite. The omelette was another dish that was sampled and the reports were good. The iced coffee not so much, but I'm not sure what the issue was there. All-in-all I'm pleased to have another gluten friendly food stop for breakfasts and lucnches along the main drag of Stones Corner/Greenslopes. I wouldn't say it's a stand out, but our experience was reasonable and I wouldn't be adverse to eating there again.
