I'm about a year and a half late, but I wanted to do well by this establishment. It was September of 2018 and I was in town for a wedding. I had planned to spend the weekend at a friend's house on their floor. But the first night I was unable to get to sleep (sleeping on the ground in your teens is easier than when you're pushing 30). Desperate, I opened the yelp app to find a place with a bed. It had to of been 7am in the morning and the folks here answered my call, and they put me up for a room right away despite the place being basically filled up. I popped over on foot and was treated excellently and I finally got to sleep for the long day of festivities. AND: When I had returned home for the weekend, I realized I had left my beloved Bathory hat (too small for my head) in my hotel room. BELOW IS MY LETTER TO ADDRESS ISSUES AND PHOTOS. THIS PLACE HAS OLD 70's to 80's rooms and then the great remodeled room my friends had. I recently stayed at your hotel during a girls trip and chose your property because of the convenience and reputation. While the trip itself was wonderful, unfortunately my room experience was extremely disappointing and did not reflect the accommodations I paid for. My friends were placed in Room 221, which appeared updated and well maintained. My room, 214, was the complete opposite. I specifically paid for a newly renovated two-queen room, yet the room I received felt very outdated and heavily worn. The mattress was in such poor condition that I ended up sleeping on a small portion of the bed just to try to stay comfortable. Both chairs in the room had peeling and tattered upholstery, making them unusable and unacceptable in appearance. The headboard also had stains/markings that were disturbing and very off-putting. Overall, the room gave the impression of neglect rather than the renovated accommodations advertised. I did bring concerns to housekeeping during my stay, but nothing was resolved, and I never received meaningful follow-up regarding the condition of the room. I've attached photos documenting the issues because I believe they clearly show that the room was not representative of what was booked or paid for. I understand that not every stay will be perfect, but the difference between my room and the renovated room my friends received was significant. I am requesting that management review this situation and provide an appropriate refund or compensation for the condition of the accommodations provided. Thank you for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you soon. No one addressed my issues, we got in checked in and got ready to leave for dinner and our concert. I wasn't in this room to jump into bed etc. until the end of my night. All of this is when the fine print says complain to the front desk we will move you.... I'm pleasantly surprised with our stay here. We normally stay downtown Portland, yet we're meeting friends for dining & drinking in this part of town (bonus: able to save a bit of $$ on our room to spend on food & drink!). Here's the Hit Parade: -pulled-up to ample safe free outdoor parking in big spaces - greeted by pleasant Front Desk guy, all the staff were lovely - up 1 flight of stairs to a clean, small King room - heat works, smells nice, comfy bed, Xfinity TV, internet works - coffee in the lobby (not in room) - big fridge, microwave - bathroom is small yet new fixtures, clean, great shower with fantastic pressure & plenty of hot water, comfy towels - free business center in lobby - lobby provides list of about 20 local walking-distance restaurants with hours, cuisine, distance & directions - our room was near the 'bend' of the building, window facing East; nice n quiet, just the normal amount of noise you'd expect. Eastside Lodge isn't glamorous with funky-cool features, it's an old-style drive up motel. However when you look closely you'll notice everything is very clean n fresh. The stairwells are clean, the walkways & railings looked freshly painted, no chips or signs of being a tired property. We were very cozy & happy here & definitely recommend. read more

This motel is within walking distance of the convention center, which could save you money on ride sharing apps or parking. In terms of location, this place is prime east-Burnside without the Jupiter price tag. I stayed here for 6 nights while traveling for work. Staff was friendly, no frills but the place was clean and safe. Free parking in a city where every hotel charges $25+ per night to park. Also it's close to literally everything. Definitely will stay here again. read more

This has been my first choice motel for my trips to Portland for over 5 years and I am sure I have stayed here more than 25 times. Realistically, probably MUCH more. They have always let me check in early in the morning with no extra cost (this is very helpful to me as I usually arrive in the mornings), and checking out late has never been a problem either as long as I've let them know/asked if it would be okay. Not that I'd mind if they did (because I understand it can be a hassle for them), but I don't recall ever being charged for this either. This is not a fancy place and I appreciate it for that reason. It has everything I need, nothing more and nothing less. The location is great; close to bars and food and coffee, and a short walk to downtown and the max and, most importantly to me, these are some of the nicest people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. I might be biased because I have been staying here long enough to have great memories attached to it, but there really are no downsides that I can think of. Their rooms are always clean, their beds are comfortable, decent wifi, they have a nice outside sitting/smoking area, parking is free and even if you aren't bringing a car they have no problems with a friend visiting taking a space (just make sure you get a slip from the front desk so you don't risk getting towed). Technically, I know this isn't a 5-Star hotel, but it gets 5 stars anyway because it DOESN'T get better than this for me and what I like and what makes me feel comfortable. I'll never stay anywhere else while I am in Portland unless I absolutely have to. read more

I'll start off by saying that the only reason they're getting 2 stars instead of 1 is because the people who work there are so nice. I was told that the lodge had been remodeled, apparently they forgot the 3rd floor. The floor was almost sticky, but also felt like there had been sand sprinkled in some places. There was such small walking space between the bed and the bathroom. The a/c unit was amazing, but only pointed up, or into the other bed. The curtain, I don't know what was on it, but it was gross. The staff here are so warm and welcoming and kind! I stay in hotels often and have rarely found such pleasant and inviting attitudes. Clean and safe, no frills comfort in a great location for walking to Portland attractions. The sound of the shower in our room was an unexpectedly pleasant way to erase the alarm clock-shaped bruise from my consciousness this morning. My bathing was accompanied by the richest and most sonorous water-generated palette I've heard from a bathroom. The 2 fundamental standing waves are pitched almost exactly a fifth apart, and I heard at least 9 different overtones ringing out of the pseudo-white noise of the shower. This was one of the best sounding showers of my life, and the shower massage actually works too. About the hotel - it's cheap and convenient, and everything expected to go along with that applies. Our room was across the street from Doug Fir, down the street from Voodoo Donuts, and afforded a beautiful view of scenic... Couch Street. The interior of the elevator has a very strange marble-like pattern, and smells of old berries. Parking is ample and convenient. I saw something shaped like a pool on the way in but declined to investigate further.. that shouldn't be a deal breaker. I was headed down to Portland for a concert downtown and wanted a cheap hotel within walking distance to the venue for one night. The Thrift Lodge was the answer. In order to maximize our experience, we opted for a smoking room. We figured if we were going to go cheap, we would go all the way. My friend had never smoked on the toilet, so this was a memorable experience. We went to a show at Berbati's Pan downtown and it was less than a mile walk... just across the Burnside Bridge. We wouldn't have any problem stumbling back to the hotel after the show. We had breakfast at the Doug Fir across the street. Simply amazing club sandwich... and HUGE. I saved half for lunch. After we ate we strolled through some really fun shops across the street... vintage and artsy boutiques. Everyone was super nice and recommended we check out the Mississippi area up the street. We checked out about 20 minutes late because we weren't paying attention to time. There was no fuss about it at all. The Thrift Lodge allowed me to turn my trip to Portland into something memorable. read more

Though it's not as pretty or as hip as the near by Jupiter hotel, the Thriftlodge is perfectly fine, affordable, and full of helpful staff. We had free internet, a parking space right in the lot, walking distance to many of the good bars, restaurants, shops, in the area, and a shower with good water pressure. They also had a mini fridge, microwave, safe, and tv in the room. The bed was large and comfortable and the room was quiet. We had a problem with our card being charged twice and the manager was so kind, helpful and understanding about helping us solve the problem. Our room was clean and comfortable, if a little small. It also had working air conditioning, thank goodness. The oddest thing was that the toilet was plumbed with hot water. To be fair, snooty women pay a lot to have their bits steamed, I however found it kind of strange. The property is located very conveniently for Portland tourist sites, and the owner is very accommodating and friendly. The WiFi is a little spotty, but easy enough to sign back in if you get bumped. read more

One of the WORST hotel I've ever stayed at. They put me on a 3rd floor room which was old and dirty. The sink was nasty with shaved hair stuck to the faucet handle. The A/C unit is super loud and you can hear the loud hum from the next room's A/C unit. I left at 10:15 pm the next night and stayed somewhere else. I tried to get a partial refund and spoke to Nasheem who was rude and proceeded to tell me how the system works. I was courteous and tried to work with him but he would not work with me and even hung up on me over the phone. It is not your 5 star hotel but it is a descent and clean place for an affordable price. If you like to explore you can just rent a bird or a lime to go to Pearl District or Downtown or it is a walkable distance if it is your first day in Portland or it is an 8 minute drive. That being said there is an amazing Thai food truck just across the street that is open past midnight and a good russian restaurant. Bus and MAX (train) available within the area. For the price you pay in Portland in summer, this was a steal. Its not fancy and looks like a grey drabby building but it was in a great neighbourhood and had a quiet clean room with AC that was working fantastic when it was over 90 degrees outside. Ice machine down the hall. Walking distance to downtown and was surrounded by lots of cafes, shops and breweries. The owners were only ever polite and helpful. Coffee and hot water in the lobby. Looking at the other reviews first I would have never booked this place but after our 2 night experience last weekend, I wouldn't hesitate to return. Oh and great water pressure! I am staying at this "lodge" as I write this review. The positive: the room is well maintained and has all the amenities one expects in a cheap motel. The negative? The motel is crowded with antifa and drug trade. I figure they have no choice during the lockdowns, but I'd avoid this place at all costs if safety and security are your thing. The first night I stayed here, someone broke out a window from inside their room. The staff didn't even know about it until I told them. They took it in stride - that is, they expect these things. It's 3am. and someone on a skateboard just pulled in to the parking lot looking for a little sumpn' sumpin'. Look - if you're an idiot from Salem looking for a bed for the night, this is your ideal place. You can even get a hit of crack along with your bed - we all know how much you love that. Anyone else - stay away. It's the next day, and I do want to add these two things - first, I was only at this place because my apartment had a plumbing disaster. I never imagined the place was anything better than it is. Second, the staff was extremely nice. Still, stay away if you know what's good for you. read more

This is very good for the price if your on a budget. If you like fancy it's not for you. But if you just need a place to put your bags , sleep, then no worries. They even have a small fridge, microwave and good air circulation. There was a small odor in the room but I think its just because its old. But for the price of $81.00 for two beds and for the locality it isn't bad , then I would say go for it! Owner is very nice too. They don't have a blow dryer in the bathroom but I'm sure you could ask for one. Oh if you want a bath tub, its a shower only. Clean and comfortable place. Good if your on a budget! read more

After spontaneously deciding to make a one night trip to Portland, we booked this place the day before for four people. We booked one room with two queen beds for $135, with tax -- pretty solid price for a spot that is about a 10 minute walk to downtown! The room is really basic, two beds, a bathroom, and a desk -- all are pretty small. Like someone mentioned before, the space between one of the beds and the bathroom entrance is really tight. The bathroom itself is also quite small, and the shower ceiling is really low. However, everything was clean and worked as expected. The beds are also just out of date and there were a couple of stains on the sheets, but nothing to complain about. In general, this hotel just felt out-dated, but not broken or gross or anything. It's a solid place to stay for one or two nights at a good price. The hotel is right next to a couple of clubs, and as we were staying there on a Friday, there was still a bit of commotion outside until like 3 AM. The service was really friendly, and we checked in at around 11 PM with no problems. The next day, after we had already checked out, one of the owners even moved his car to let us park in his spot for free while we explored the city! It's not going to be the most lavish stay, as there's no breakfast or anything (there is free coffee though), but it is a convenient little motel that satisfies anything you'd 'need for a couple of nights' stay! read more

This place was a little run down, simple, and old, but it was a bargain. I loved the location. It was an easy 1 mile walk away from downtown, and a lot cheaper than most downtown hotels. There were lots of cool places to eat and coffee shops around it. The other Voodoo doughnuts location was nearby too. I arrived to Portland in the late morning, and the owners, a really nice family, were able to accommodate me and let me check-in to a room a little early. They also let me store my suitcase in the office the next day so that I could continue to explore Portland without lugging my bag around with me. I loved my stay here, and I would definitely stay here again next time I come back. read more

STEPH JUDGEMENT: Newly-remodeled budget motel convenient to lots of cool spots. It's so unfortunate that the biz photo for this place is some dude's horrible bug bite pic! I think this place deserves better than that. I'd read all the reviews and I got what I expected: a clean, comfortable room with decent amenities in a cool part of town. Our room with a king was a decent size, and there was enough closet/drawer space for our stuff and the bathroom was also fairly spacious. Their toiletries are meh but I wasn't expecting anything fancy so brought my own stuff anyway. There's free wifi, a mini fridge, and a good-sized TV with cable--not bad at all for their very reasonable prices. The bf and I found this place to be a perfectly comfortable base of operations for a weekend in Portland. There are many spots you can just walk to (Union Jack strip club and Thai Champa food truck are right across the street), and there is a bus stop round the corner that'll take you straight into downtown, which isn't that far of a walk anyway. For the price of this place it's a bargain. You pay for what you get for. We were in town for a night and needed a place to stay. The front staff was friendly and helpful, check in process was easy. I had to park on the street which was unexpected and it sucked. Fortunately, it was OK to park on the streets on a weekend night. Weekday side-street parking is 2 hours (overnight OK.) Nice budget hotel. Terrific location. We had no problems with the staff, they were friendly. The only problem was that they are renovating the rooms on the first floor and the banging and drilling noise went on way later in the day than I thought was reasonable. We were trying to get a pre-dinner nap at about 5 pm and the noise made it impossible. This was on a Sunday even. Anyway this problem will be self correcting, I assume, shortly but you might want to call ahead and ask if the renovations are done especially if you think you might want to relax in the room at all. Otherwise I will certainly not hesitate to stay here again on my next trip to Portland. read more

Online hotel booking is a lot like online dating: you make a decision based on highly selective information and some flattering pictures, and hope that when you meet in real life, they look at least somewhat like how they presented themselves. There will be no second date with the Thrift Lodge Downtown Portland. We chose this motel based on the pictures and info from Expedia, which claimed it was a two-star-class hotel and gave it an overall rating of 3.3 out of 5. For the price ($80 on a Sunday night), we weren't expecting much, just a clean, decent room near downtown to plunk our stuff to extend our holiday weekend stay. OMFG, it was disgusting. TINY room barely had space for the two beds, so you had to turn sideways and scooch to get into the bathroom, where the door didn't fully shut, the walls were covered in ancient, grimy wallpaper coated in stains and dirt, and the tiny shower stall was so scary that we didn't even risk taking a shower in there. The room was super-dark with no overhead lighting, the beds were lumpy and uncomfortable, and management had thoughtfully provided a LONG list of strongly worded safety tips like "Do not let strangers into your room. Hotel employees will be wearing uniforms." No hair dryer, but there was an ironing board and iron, a mini-fridge with a mini-microwave perched on top, and a (much-needed) programmable in-room safe. But then, the safety list said "DO NOT leave valuables in your room!" so I don't know who to believe. While we were waiting to check in, I noticed a cigarette machine in the lobby, where a man and a woman were attempting to buy cigarettes. The man said, "Newports? Since when do you smoke those?" and the woman replied, "Well, I had to start saving money when you were in jail." That probably should have told us everything we needed to know about this place. read more

I was so glad we stayed at this place. Sure, there was that initial musty pee-pee smell that hit our faces as we entered our non-smoking room, but we cracked open the windows and the awesome Portland air took care of that gnarliness. Simple and modest, perfect for thrifty travellers who don't need a swank pad (see Jupiter Hotel down the street). Roughly $70 per night for a king bed, just down the street from a convenient coffeeshop (Grendel's), all night mini mart (Plaid Pantry), lounge/restaurant (Doug Fir), little gallery reminiscent of Giant Robot 2 for LA folks (Grass Hut), and a handful of super cute vintage shops. The 12 bus dropped us off right at the motel. Right in front. So convenient to downtown (hop and skip to Burnside Bridge), north of the cool Hawthorne area, and everywhere else was easily accessible. The room had a mini fridge, cable tv ('Dirty Jobs' marathon, wooo), and a nice view of the tiny left-wing bookstore across the street. So glad. read more

I came to Portland recently and was looking for someplace inexpensive but conveniently located--and Thriftlodge has both. Located in Lower Burnside, it's walking distance from downtown, Hawthorne and sits on three bus lines. Plus there are some cool shops, restaurants and nightlife within a few blocks (the famed Doug Fir is just across the street). I'm afraid I can't give Thriftlodge more than three stars because our room was a little shabby and we had a minor annoyance with the toilet. However, the room was clean, the wifi and parking was free and we'd spend twice as much downtown, so I'd stay here again. read more

This is a good alternative to some of the pricier hotels that are close to the Moda center, I think it's a family run business and the older gentleman that took my reservation and checked is in was hilarious and fun. It's definitely a little older and the bathrooms need an update but all in all I would book it again for my next concert. read more

Summary: If you're willing to skimp on features for a room at an extremely reasonable price in the middle of absolutely everything, this is what you are looking for. It isn't bad, but this is definitely not the ritz. PRO's: - Extremely, extremely friendly staff (Naseem rocked, as did everyone else I dealt with) - Room perks: tv, microwave, fridge, safe, iron / ironing board, on site laundry room - On a main vein with lots of interesting shops in both directions - Very close to downtown, literally walking distance (and to a part of downtown you would want to go to) - Everything was clean and sanitary - The windows open! CON's: (Nothing major, just a matter of taste) - I don't think anything has been updated since the 70's - Stall shower that is on the small side even for a stall shower - Not much sound proofing - The AC doesn't have a thermostat, just "low cool" and "high cool", so I woke up boiling a few times - Though the rooms have safes, mine didn't due to "maintenance". They offered to put my stuff in the main office safe, but that obviously isn't very convenient if you're going to be coming and going a lot. GENERAL NOTES: - This is *not* a "family" hotel. It's not that it's especially seedy, but it's a cheap place in the middle of a lot of entertainment, so most people staying here came to town to hit the clubs. Anyone with kids will probably want a quieter place that is not in the middle of everything. - While we did not have a car, I noticed that there is a good amount of parking, but the lot was pretty full the entire time we were there. Being in the middle of everything, I don't know how available addition parking is in the area. - There is an "alternative" strip club directly across the street called Union Jack's if you want to spend (or earn) some money. I hear that the Suicide Girls (a touring national act of tattooed and pierced burlesque performers) perform there as individuals when not on the road. I only stuck my head in there for a minute, and it seemed ok, but the Kit Kat club only about two miles away is a very high end version of the same thing and is like the kind of strip club you think only exists in movies, so I'd recommend that place if "alternative" strip clubs are your thing. - Douglas Fir is a great place to eat just a half block away. It's affordable and has a great menu. There is also a coffee shop called Grendel's across the street from Douglas Fir, though it's as stripped down as a coffee shop gets so I stuck with Douglas Fir. - I'm fairly noise-sensitive, but found things to be basically ok on that front. That said, if you *really* like your quiet, this probably isn't the best place. Like I mentioned, there are a lot of people coming in from late nights and not a lot of sound proofing, but there were no real problems and the front desk was so friendly and helpful that I am sure if there was an obnoxious group (past chatter on the way back to their room) that they would handle it for you. - I read the elevator being maligned in a number of other reviews and was very interested to see how badly it was going to suck when I got here, but was disappointed to find it was just a normal elevator. I think people see the ancient buttons that don't look like they're any more recent than the 70's and project the worst, but apart from old buttons, it went at the same speed as every other elevator I've ever been in. - We got interconnecting rooms! I called and asked about this and was told that there weren't any because that would be a "safety issue", and was delighted when we showed up and had connecting rooms after all.
