THE MODERN CHURCH!
When we relocated to the south we encountered what I refer to as the modern church. These churches are non-traditional and very different from what I have experienced anywhere. We have actually been searching for the antithesis of the large and loud mega-church. This is a small church that is relatively new and I have passed it several times throughout the years. Finally, I decided that we should check it out.
When we roll up on Sunday morning, the first thing I notice is the beautiful ethereal music being streamed into the parking area. It was actually Oceans by Hillsong which is one of my favorites but I erroneously assumed that this would be the type of music that would be a part of the morning service. Not so Grasshopper!
As we entered the small building, it was very quiet as there was prayer in progress. We met several members and had nice conversation as we waited for the sanctuary to open. We eventually entered and took our seats. It is a small and intimate space with an open stage and monitors for viewing. The lights are very low and there is a mysterious haze present. We immediately notice the drums on stage and I feel a sense of apprehension but I say nothing. As the music starts, (no drums), we both notice the Pastor over to the left motioning to the technicians to turn the music up louder and louder. Soon enough, the music was blasting like what I imagine would happen at a rock concert. Now, I have never attended anything other than a classical concert so I'm only guessing. Needless to say, I had to leave. The music was so loud that I could not just stand outside of the sanctuary; I actually had to exit the building. Had I not been with "Job Jr.", I would have just left the property. Instead, I returned to the area where that beautiful soft music was streaming as I arrived and just chilled until the sanctuary music ended. A member was kind enough to actually let me know that the music had ended and I returned to hear the message.
Once the message was over and offering taken, the music started again and I left immediately with my husband following. While my husband did stay and endure the noise, he agreed that the music was just too loud! This is why we left our previous church because the music had grown so loud and unbearable that it simply drove us away.
Normally, this review would have been written after several visits but since we will not be returning, it is written to give the reader an idea of what to expect. You can expect to be warmly greeted by a diverse group of members who really want you to feel welcomed. Even as I was outside escaping the music, a member was right there engaging me the entire time. He was very apologetic about the music and even mentioned the idea of having a more traditional 9:30 service while the later service will continue to be more contemporary. I think that is a great idea because visitors and members should have options. This church is non-denominational and their services are very contemporary.
So now you know! Meanwhile our search for a small traditional church continues. read more
