Optimal Health Chiropractic - Dr. Sarah Kernan

Ok, so I recently moved back to MD from NYC where I had been seeing a great chiropractor for a…read morewhile. I started looking for a new one down here because my symptoms had come back. I should have gone right to Optimal Health-- most people I know in the area whose opinion I trust on the matter go to Dr Jeff or Dr Sarah... but since they didn't take my insurance... I decided to find another doctor. I was sad... because I had heard great things about Optimal, but I didn't want to not use insurance and have to pay a ton of money out of pocket. :-/ So I found a doctor in the Ocean Pines/Berlin area (not Optimal Health) and went to them for about 2 weeks. 6 visits. I swear it was the most drawn out process EVER. The first visit was just talking about it. Then I got xrays and then came back, they assessed the xrays (for a whole different appointment...) told me what I already told them was the problem when I was in NYC and then for 2 more visits did nothing but putting a vibrating pad on my neck and hip and then some weird ultrasound technology. I cannot believe they charged me for 2 full visits where the doctor barely did anything to me AT ALL.... I even asked after the second visit for a manual neck or hip adjustment (which is what I was used to in NYC) and they actually said "No, that's not how I do things"...... I am 31...not 95. I don't need to get prepped for weeks for an adjustment. Finally they started using a machine to adjust which I did not find effective at all (despite their LITERALLY 30 minute lesson on how the machine worked...basically I paid them to talk about their machine for 30 minutes that session...) I was steaming! I wanted to leave but I already paid for the session. Boy did this chiropractor like hearing themselves talk.......... ANYWAY, after I left there that day, I drove to **Optimal Health Chiropractic**. I mean literally from their office to Optimal on my way home. I was seriously considering just forking over whatever it cost to actually get a legit adjustment. As I already knew, they didn't accept my insurance. When I came in to explain what was going on, Dr. Sarah and the office manager were there listening. Dr. Sarah was very helpful in helping me understand the difference at their place...and they even explained that if I came on as a cash patient it would actually be cheaper than me going through my insurance as out of network. I was surprised.... and as it turns out, paying straight cash (not dealing with insurance at all) an appointment here with Dr Jeff is only $5 more than my copay the other chiropractor (which was $35). I was shocked. Well... let's do that. I had my appointment today (all of this took place yesterday!) in the morning. I was impressed with how fast they got me in. Dr. Jeff did a full review of my written information and did some tests about my range of motion, asked me lots of questions about what hurt and when...very thorough. And then....wait for it.....WE STARTED RIGHT AWAY. Like that minute... because he was able to figure out what was wrong with me, which xrays in NYC and from the other chiropractor confirmed, without even using xrays. He literally figured it out in 10 minutes with a little pushing/pressing and examining of my neck, lower back and hips. Like a damn miracle worker. We went into another room and he immediately got to work and did some neck/hip/back adjusting. And just like that, in 30 minutes.... he did what the other chiropractor didn't do in 6 visits. SIX. SIX VISITS. What a huge waste of money going anywhere else was for me. Tomorrow I am breaking up with my old chiropractor.... Dr. Jeff is my new guy.

Dr. Sarah is amazing! Called in this morning with killer pain and I was so pleased to schedule a…read more10am appointment. The receptionist was extremely friendly, she seemed to understand the desperate need when someone is in pain. Dr. Sarah was also mega compassionate, explained everything in detail and went above and beyond to assist me with my pain relief. I am a patient for life! I know it can be frightening when you visit a new chiropractor but if you are in search look no further! You won't be disappointed.

Before going to Kappes, I lived in NYC and used a great Chiropractor up there. When I moved down…read morehere and was looking for a good Chiropractor, I did some research and found that Kappes had good reviews and he took my insurance... win/win, right? Some positives: 1. He is a nice guy. I wouldn't mind drinking a beer with him and watching a football game. 2. The receptionist (who I believe is his daughter?) is very nice and friendly. 3. Location is convenient 4. They have physical therapy on site as well, which seems like a good idea to do both for people who need both in once place. 5. Clearly, he has been in business for a long time so he is doing something right for enough people to return and keep him in business. Sadly... I'm just not going to be one of those people. I know that Chiropractors are slightly different from medical doctors--and that what they do is as much of an art as a science. I went to him for 6 visits. And I can say without a doubt that whatever HIS process is.... it was the most drawn out process EVER--and I feel like 90% of the time I spent in his office was wasted and useless. After the second visit, I asked if he could manually adjust my neck and hip because they were especially painful, (which is what I was used to in NYC) and because... HEY I'M PAYING YOU and he actually just came out and said "No, that's not how I do things" (i.e. he doesn't manually adjust patients anymore) In fact, the whole time I was there for 6 visits, I never once saw him manually adjust anyone at all. Only the Pro-Adjusting machine (and vibrating pads, a rolling table and a weird ultrasound wand). I never once felt in any of the appointments like there was any benefit attained from doing any of these things... When I brought the question of why he only uses the Proadjuster instead of manual adjustment he said, "Well, a manual adjustment is nothing more than an educated guess." I pointed to his degree on the wall and said, "Well.... Yes... it is an educated guess.... and that's what YOU are educated for." I'm not saying the ProAdjuster doesn't work on anyone... but it certainly didn't work on me. I could barely feel anything happening. In fact, it was so useless to me that I then decided to try a different Chiropractor after my 5th appointment.
