I purchased my first home, and used Eastern Home Inspections in Mansfield, NJ. I was referred by half a dozen people, to use them. Even my Realtor had nothing but good things to say about the company. Especially, the inspector, Michael Burla. When the day came for my inspection. He was early, and already surveying any damage on the outside of my home. I thought it was pretty enthusiastic that he was already there working. He was so friendly, and allowed my husband and I to walk along with him through the house explaining what he was doing, very informative. He joked with us and had a great time, letting us know the ins and outs of every nook and cranny of the house. Including all of our appliances. He also stated that he's been a home inspector for 25 years. But he still wasn't afraid to get on down into the crawlspace to check for termites. We received our inspection later that night to our surprise. Michael made things so much easier for us to decide on what to do next. So professional, informative, and very friendly. He was willing to answer all of our questions. And Carol in the office was so efficient in getting us our agreement and scheduling for a time that we could be there. We had Eastern do a home inspection of our home before we bought. Rick was quick to tell us of his many years of experience which made us feel comfortable. Nothing stood out as wrong during the inspection, but after we moved in and problems began to appear, we thought back and realized several procedure concerns. First, Rick said he got here early and started the inspection, which did not allow us to follow those movements and findings as we like to do. Also, I pointed out a spot in the gutter where much rainwater was dripping down. Rick dismissed my concerns saying that everyone had that. I pointed out that I could see several homes from where I stood and none of them had that. I also noted the very wet soil and moss underneath. Rick asked if we needed a termite inspection. As we were not getting a mortgage, we didn't need one but wanted one. He certified that there was no evidence of termites or termite damage. We never saw him do anything that might determine that conclusion. The inspection report showed very little wrong with the property and those items were acceptable. 2 days after moving in, water was backing up in the sink, when the dishwasher was run or just the water. We thought it might be because of the inoperable disposal which we knew of and which Rick mentioned. But, as it turned out and after we had water all over the kitchen floor, the backup was due to a clog in the line. Immediately starting off with a repair. Rick did run the dishwasher but we don't know if he ran it for a complete cycle, which he should have done. Then came the bugs - centipedes, carpenter ants and...termites. Lots and lots of termites outside under pieces of slate. My husband contacted Rick about the situation. Rick mentioned that it had been January when he inspected and that not much could be determined in the cold weather. In the next breath, he said he could find termites in 2 feet of snow. Which is it? He mentioned that he was a guest in the owner's home and could disturb nothing. Not even a piece of slate? Now, our concerns aren't so much that termites were found but that Rick seemingly did nothing. We didn't see him go outside to look for mud tunnels. My husband was a realtor for 13 years and followed many inspectors who merely tapped the woodwork with the handle of a screwdriver to listen for hollow sounds. Rick didn't do that. Had we known of the termites, we would have insisted the owner pay for remediation. Instead, we are strapped with treatment that will cost over a thousand dollars in the end. If Rick felt he couldn't thoroughly check for termites in the winter, why did he offer to do so without warning us of the uncertainty of it and charge us for it? But, the worst part of dealing with Rick was how condescending he was, as was mentioned by A.Z. I chimed in to the conversation but Rick talked right over me and wouldn't let me be heard. We ended up yelling over each other and my husband hung up. I am one who is quick to comp;iment people and have only left one other bad review but Rick's treatent of this customer was totally unconcerned and unprofessional. Maybe other inspectors in this company do a better job of customer satisfaction, but we could certainly not recommend Rick. read more

Bill and the Eastern team definitely met our expectations as first time home-buyers and we're glad we went with the recommendation. They were on time, courteous, and made everything very easy to understand. Since this is our first home we weren't sure what to expect but the whole process was very thorough, simple and seamless. It took about 2 hours and Bill explained everything from start to finish. He tested every light switch, window, sink, major system, among other things and made sure to stop multiple times to ask if we understood or if there were any questions. He even gave us several tips before moving in. After the report came back a day later there was good follow up and the organization made it easy to talk through and put a plan together for seller review. Would recommend to family and friends. Save your money and get a real Inspection with a company that is just not out to rush through the job. Puttied holes in the Bathtub/ shower were not mentioned, washer cycle is not working along with several other items. It is as if they were working with the seller. Worse yet the office will not return phone calls, and inspector asked "what do you want us to do about it" I would not recommend this company read more

In 2005 I used Eastern Home Inspection and was satisfied; I recently used them to inspect my new home and was very disappointed in their service this time. I would not recommend them for several reasons; here is one of them. Mulch surrounded the exterior of the building an the inspector was not able to do termite inspection. He said he would have to come back for additional charge. This did not make me a happy customer. read more

I originally scheduled an appointment with Rhino Home Inspections. Without any explanation, they scheduled me with someone from Eastern Home Inspections. It turns out they are connected, so I don't know that this is much of a problem in and of itself. But, for the sake of this review, I would say my concerns reflect on both entities as I have made extensive efforts to reach out to anyone at either company. It is important to me that I am fair to any business before leaving a negative review. I have spent three months trying to work with the two owners. My request was simple: Please come to my house and let me show you what your inspector did wrong. I've had three licensed professionals come to address problems and all three have said, "Your inspector should have caught this." The owners sent the original inspector to verify his own work. After his second inspection, he emailed me and literally wrote, "I did nothing wrong..." The rest of the email suggested that I am inexperienced and that my expectations are off base. Obviously, I disagree. So, I've spoken to one of the owners three times. He has been hostile and unwilling to resolve my problem. He claims I don't know what I'm talking about and I acknowledged that he could be correct--that's why I hired licensed professionals to confirm my suspicions. But the owner of Eastern Home Inspections says the licensed professionals also don't know what they are talking about. He even went as far as to insult one plumber over the phone while he was here in my home. Here are some examples of what has been identified as a problem: -mold in two bathrooms -improperly installed garbage disposal which has burst and flooded our kitchen -the pipe connecting to a shower head burst after we moved in as it had corroded -faucets are seeping water -two plumbers have said, "they've used 'illegal piping' in this house" which the owner disputes is a real problem. My concern is that my mother's recent home inspection addressed similar concerns, so I ask, why wouldn't Eastern Home Inspections adhere to the same quality? -the inspector never found the water shutoff valve, which was odd for a man with over "20 years of experience" It is important to me that a business is given a chance to right any wrongs, or at least appease an upset client regardless of who is right. And I've given that opportunity to the owners. The bottom line is this: If I am wrong on all counts, I don't see what they stand to gain by 1) not returning calls, 2) hanging up on me when I'm trying to speak with them, which the owner has done three times, 3) telling me that no one else knows what they're speaking about and 4) behaving in an aggressive and argumentative manner. We all have jobs, bosses, clients, etc., and we have to learn how to address people in a way they feel respected. All I have I asked is to have someone other than the inspector--who may generally do a great job, but who may have just had an off day--to come out and look at what I feel was missed and help me understand their perspective. Who knows, they may have found the inspector is human and made a mistake or they could have taken the time to help me learn something. And, instead of the hours spent on the phone, they could have had a happy customer who would recommend them to others based on the time and effort they put in to make the customer happy. To illustrate the owner's character, when spelling out his email, he said, "I as in 'Idiot'," to try and demean me in the conversation. I just don't understand that mindset and would have to caution anyone from working with this company, or Rhino Home Inspections. read more
