I love the school is small and that all the teachers care for all the students and most of the students care for their school and their community. This school has hosted the Special Olympics in the past. And the students take part in aiding the Olympians and running the event.

It may be the only elementary school in Fernley. I know it's the best because I went to kindergarten here way back in 1970 and still remember it. I even remember my teachers name was Mrs. Draper. The day I visited I stopped in at the office to ask if I could have a peak at my old classroom. I was told it wasn't possible right now because class was still in session. I was told I was welcome to come back after school if I'd like. I never did like being told to stay after class had ended...apparently I still don't. Besides we had other things to go see that day. It is home to the Sierra-Plumas Joint Unified School District, Sierraville Recreation District activities, Sierra County Arts Council events, etc. This review concerns only the park to the west and south of the building. Although small at about one acre, the park features a tennis court and a basketball court, both of which have been newly resurfaced in blue and green (see photo). In addition, there is a playground, a covered picnic table, and a well-kept grassy area. The park is open to the public, and so is a perfect place to bring the family.

During cold, rainy, or snowy weather I'd run over to the principals house; he would give me the key so my friends & I could play in the small gym. Boy, that was a different time. We loved the 8' basketball hoops set up for "biddy" basketball & we could "dunk" just like the pros. The Sierraville Schoolhouse is a beautiful old building that could tell lots of stories!
