Ah, the Berlin Wall! I enjoy wall art and no, I'm not talking about those stupid graffiti with senseless and pointless reference to gangs and products of sheer boredom. But tags that actually took time to create that involve thought and meaning (usually political). This is a long stretch of just that. It's colorful and it reminds us of the Cold War when East and West Berlin were divided. The most important and popular parts: "My God, Help Me Survive This Deadly Love" aka "Fraternal Kiss" by Dmitri Vrubel showing Brezhnev and Honecker kissing, and a tag of Berlin. But the other parts are interesting as well. There's a part with red footprints - reminds me of a horror story I heard as a kid that involves bloody feet, ugh! On the other side of the wall are less interesting stuff but if you look carefully enough, you might see something interesting. read more

Lovely place to walk in Berlin. So much culture and artwork that really just speaks to the artful history and community of northern Germany. I loved the powerful messages of many of the works as well as the huge variety of pieces. It's as if you're walking through an outdoor museum. Some of the pieces have been defaced but for the most part, the wall is intact or covered with a thick resin like protective cover. TIP: walk when it's not so blazing hot as the sun BEAMS down on this area and can make viewing the art less enjoyable. read more

My first touch of the wall was in some mall in British Columbia. They had a full-height broken piece of it on display. This time, we got to see the real thing. Forgive me as I am no historian but this is what I experienced. Some friends of ours were nice enough to pick us up all the way from the cruise ship dock in Rostock which was about 1.5 to 2 hours away. We even got to experience the autobahn which was cool. The area where we parked looked like it was newly developed as the buildings were modern yet unoccupied. There are sections where the original wall and guard towers are still standing and intact, one side full of graffiti, the other side mainly untouched. To give a visual effect of where the wall stood, they erected vertical iron rods that follow the original footprint. It was great to see the wall with locals as it turned into a personalized tour and away from other tourists which we appreciated very much. TIP: Find a parking spot and walk. That way you get to experience pretty much everything. There were a few restaurants scattered nearby along Bernauer St. OVERALL: They did a nice job preserving the original wall and memorializing certain parts. read more

An overall wonderful relaxing stroll while in Berlin. It does not feel long because you are usually stopping stand taking picture breaks. It's amazing artists from all over the world have played a part creating this unified piece. Bringing light to the end of communism. During my trip to Berlin this was a must see of course. There is also a cute shop in the middle that will stop your passport. I flew to Berlin from Paris, being that I came from a EU country, I did not have to go through immigration and ultimately receive a passport stamp. There is also a little restaurant shack at the end that sells Currywurst. A traditional dish tourist should try in Berlin. It is just a sausage with curry powder. It's the little part of Berlin where the wall still stands. It's touristy, and parking is hard-to-find, but it's almost a "must see" when visiting Berlin. Most of the wall is covered in graffiti, and there's vendors trying to sell you pieces of the wall. You won't have any problems getting another tourists to take your picture, or just taking the pictures of the wall is fascinating enough. The Eastside is prettier than the Westside, and you can say you've walked a part of German history. read more

This "world-largest open air gallery" is the must-see of Berlin, at least in 2009 when I saw it. Simply, it combines compelling history and street art in a photo-opportunistic way. Of course a trip to Berlin is not complete, without a visit to see the Berlin Wall. It was not as I pictured it to be. In my mind, I thought that I would be viewing a massive, tall, and thick concrete wall. What I saw were different segments of the wall. The Berlin Wall was decorated with murals, graffiti, and gum. Kind of a shame to see so much grafitti and trash at this historical sight. Still, I highly recommend visiting the Berlin Wall. As I mentioned earlier, a trip to Berlin is not complete without a visit here. read more

Such a great attraction in Berlin! It is so incredible to take a part of the city's crazy history and make it into something positive and beautiful. One disappointment was that the majority of the "gallery" was covered by a fence so you couldn't get up close and personal with the art. There are a few part that are open, but unfortunately they are covered with graffiti (which would explain the fences...huh?). Definitely a surreal experience visiting pieces of the Berlin Wall. Having heard learned so much about this historical structure in school it's overwhelming to think of the history behind this. There are few remaining segments of the wall in Berlin. Almost all of them have graffiti or gum stuck all over it. There's also postings of the history written on the wall. I feel like this is something you have to see while you're in Germany. It holds too much history and meaning for you not to see it. read more

Fortunately, some sections of the Berlin Wall were preserved by prescient Berliners. I would imagine the temptation to demolish the entire thing was tremendous. However, a representative section of the wall, double walls in some places, remains. It has become a gallery for artists of the world. Some should not quit their day jobs, though. But I digress. If you like art and history. Then East Side Gallery is definitely a place to visit. You can find the remain part of the Berlin Wall here. Not only that, on the Wall you can also find some cool and famous graffitis. This Gallery consists of 105 paintings by artists from all over the world, painted in 1990 on the east side of the Berlin Wall. The East Side Gallery was founded following the successful merger of the two German artists' associations VBK and BBK. At one point, you can also find a path go behind The Berlin Wall, which close to the River Spree. From the back you can see lots of modern graffiti from different street artist. some of them really great. Since the back of it is kinda a freezone. So the works here change quite often. You can also just find a spot to sit down there, enjoy the view of Berlin and the historical Berlin Wall at the riverside. Very nice. What I don't really like. It's that this place seem dirty, most of times when I am there. and other thing make me a bit sad that some of the paintings at the front got ruined by some horrible sketches. Even though it still has its charm. I do hope the situation will get better soon. read more

Gorgeous! A work of art not to be missed in Berlin. A part of the country's capital's history ... Ridiculously artistic and cool. I would go. Go early in AM and metro there. Don't waste your time otherwise because we walked by later and it was PACKED Really long so just make sure to see the important parts. The two men kissing, the rainbow with the locks, and the windows. Near the Molecule Man view so don't miss that either. Only was in Berlin for 2 days but was so worth seeing. read more

If you want to see a piece of the Berlin Wall, this is the piece to see. The length of this section is over a km and gives an impression of the scale of the wall. Surprisingly, the paintings are large scale and bright. They are in good condition, and many seem to have been restored. No two paintings are alike. The murals are of diverse styles and subject matter. On a humorous note, we were lost of the way here. The diver of the car stopped in front of several heavily graffitied walls thinking that he had found it. I don't think he had anticipated how enormous this section of the wall is. read more

To visit Berlin and not visit the Berlin Wall's East Side Gallery would be an opportunity missed. I thoroughly enjoyed (if thats not an inappropriate term) walking the length of it and seeing what artists had made of their remit. Some of the panels have been renovated in recent years, and while its a shame that grafitti has caused some damage, it doesn't detract too much from the experience of being at the wall and letting your mind absorb what it means to so many people. If I have any advice for future visitors to the wall coming from the city centre, it would be to take a taxi or public transport at least part of the way or one way. We walked out to the wall on the east side of it and that was definitely a mistake. Apart from being quite a long slog on a hot day it's not the most scenic of walks, more a semi industrial landscape with no access to the river views. Hardly surprising though. The return journey, once we had crossed the architecturally stunning bridge was a different story altogether and took us through a vibrant bohemian part of the city full of lively bars, restaurants, and general hustle and bustle. Take a camera, take transport one way, take your time. For me it was unmissable. read more

"Don't go to the East Side Gallery Marlou, that's such a waste of your time" - quite some people told me. But as the Wall is the one touristic Berlin-thing I didn't see before and no one could give me a good alternative, I still went and I'm glad I did. The East Side Gallery is - with about 1 km in length - the biggest part that's still of the former Wall. The overpriced souvenir shop, booths where you can get an Eastern German stamp in your passport (...) and many tourists make it a very touristic place, but honestly it's just a street where you walk on either the Eastern or the Western part of the Wall - or both, as you can easily cross now ;) The history makes it impressive, the art makes it cool. And as it doesn't cost you a single euro, I think it's just one of these things you can't miss when in Berlin. read more

With the establishment of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) in 1949, a new political and economic system was set up. A start of a dictatorship with the result of a mass migration to the West. From 1949 to 1961 East Germany had lost a sixth of its population. To stop the migration the GDR decided to close the last loop hole of the border with the Berlin Wall. The Berlin Wall enclosed West Berlin from August 13, 1961 to November 9, 1989. It was supposed to prevent citizens of East Germany from fleeing to the West. The first version was set up in one day. It had a height of around two meters, on top covered with barbwire. Over the years they added a system of barriers in front, like a signal fence, a gap for cars, carpets of steel spikes, tank traps and another fence or a second wall. And at regular intervals of approximately 250 meters observation towers stood for the border troops to monitor the border area. This area of barriers is well known as death strip. The Wall you see here is the latest version from the 70s which substituted earlier versions. The hight was raised to 3,50 meters (12-foot). Typical for the west side of the wall were the graffitis, here you see them on both sides. And pieces are missing, cause all kind of wall hunters came along to get a souvenir in the 90s. read more

Pretty cool place, as it's a piece of Berlin Wall that has been graffitied (after the war). The art is pretty varied, but it's worth a walk down. Easy to get to using public transportation, and the place is definitely worth a visit, as Berlin is sort of known for this! Prepare to walk and this place to be flooded with tourist. I waited for the bus to take me the extra way down but it took so long that it's just easier to walk from the Uban to the gallery. It only took about 20 minutes. The gallery is really pretty and has some very interesting works of art as well. I am not sure how frequently they change but it is a place worth visiting. You will know when you are there by the larger groups of people and if you look down on the sidewalk it says east gallery on there as well. I would say take your time and look at each piece. read more

Is this a must see? Yes! Was I slightly disappointed with it? Also yes... Firstly the good. Cool, different and unusual. You see bits of the famous walk which artists have used to turn into a gallery for their work. It is a great experience to wander along looking at the different pictures and trying to work out their meaning or point. This is an artwork display that you would struggle to find the like of any where else in the world. You must go and see it. On to the bad.. It could do with being looked after a bit better . Lots of the drawings had graffiti over the top of them and it all seemed to be getting a bit tired and run down. I appreciate since it is open air and on a street it is hard to protect, but I just felt a bit more could be done. Definitely go see this if your in Berlin! read more

Why would someone come to Berlin and not see the wall? I mean, it's THE wall. Sure, there are remnants of the old Mauer scattered throughout Berlin, but this is the absolute best section. Covered in some of the world's most amazing street art, it's history and art all rolled up into one, long, reach-out-and-touch-it package. Flanked on both ends by U-Bahn stations, the East Side Gallery is easily accessible, so there are no excuses not to visit. So come down, enjoy a leisurely stroll, and enjoy some great, political art. read more

It was kind of a disappointment to see what was left standing. Tons of grafiti on the wall and wasn't able to see the artwork that most yelpers spoke about. Still a must see though, as it's a historic sight. read more

I was SO excited to visit East Side Gallery as I hadn't been able to drag my dad there on our last visit, so even persistent snow couldn't stop me! A quick walk across the Oberbaum Bridge from our pit stop at Burgermeister I could see how busy the gallery was before we were even close, but luckily the majority of the other visitors seemed pretty polite and moved relatively quickly. It was so cool to see such an iconic piece of history covered in incredible artwork, but it has to be said that the excess graffiti is a bit off putting, as others have mentioned before. Whilst we were visiting large portions of the wall were covered in scaffolding in advance of some restorative works, which again impacted on the experience slightly. That being said, I'm really eager to visit again when the wall is a bit more accessible! read more

Do you remember the fall of the Berlin Wall? It seems incredible that this event happened almost 20 years ago, stranger still the history and symbolism which preceeded that momentous triumph of liberty. It's hard to think of a section of wall as a museum or gallery, but some of the work definitely falls into the art category. The real interest is too see such a long section of the wall still so intact and vibrantly painted. Personally, when I look at the wall I can't relate to what it stood for, or imagine the plight of those that tried to scale it before 1989. The history here is ASTONISHING, moreover, the amount of beautiful artpieces here are incredible! Each painting appeared to be thoughfully painted, and thought out by the artist. What saddens me is the vandalism that happens on top of these paintings. It was a shame to see that people want to ruin the artwork for others to see. Come to the Berlin Wall for a visit and take a tour to really listen to the astonishing history behind this wall. If you ever visit, I do recommend walking on the opposite side of the wall to see all of the paintings clearly as opposed to upfront. read more

There isn't a good reason not to see this if you are in Berlin. It is free, it is walkable, and such a huge piece of history that is so relevant again today. I would recommend going early -- we arrived around 8:30 am and there were only a handful of other people so it was clear for photos. However, we walked back the other way around 9:30-10:00 and there were huge groups of students and others now idling by the more popular pieces. It is unfortunate that many sections are gated off due to the number of people that graffiti over them. read more
