There was also food on (served 7-9) which included Sirloin steak and chips (Tuesday) for just £4, and curry on Wednesday for just £3.50! They are proud of their namesake, which centres on the story of the black greyhound of Linlithgow, whose master was imprisoned on an island in the middle of the nearby Loch and sentenced to starve to death. Everyday the greyhound swam out to her master with food and ended up saving his life. The locals call themselves 'Black Bitches' after the dogs symbolic loyalty. A great local, if quiet, tavern serving a range of real ales. It also has a nice beer garden. Apparently there is a folk music night every third Sunday of the month too.

An impressively good pub considering its recent opening…read more PRICE: Reasonable. SIZE: Has a large feel to it but is in fact not too big, with plenty of seating about, and a couple of extra seats in the alcove towards the front. FEEL: The pub has an open feel to it, and is decorated in a tasteful, traditional manner. RANGE: The pub stocks a regularly replenished supply of real ale, and they also have a wide selection of whiskies and spirits. No Strongbow to be seen (a good thing), and instead they have real cider on tap. TOILETS: Can be accessed from two sides if the bar is busy. They are clean, decorated like the rest of the pub and with modern, functional fittings. Now here is a good pub. Cask and Barrel opened relatively recently, and replaced an ageing bar which had maintained little or no interest for a long time. I recently started going to this pub with a large group of friends and was pleased to see that it was a delightful little place, reminding me of a similar place of quality: the Cumberland Bar in the New Town. Drinks are not inexpensive, but the prices are reasonable for the quality and choice provided. There is a 30p charge for using a card, but with a cash machine just around the corner this makes little odds. The staff are friendly, and if you ask for a taster of a beer or cider they will oblige happily, offering their opinions and advice. It is popular with a wide demographic, and with a large number of younger people like myself in attendance the place has a great feel. In these more quiet summer months before the festival there is no music playing (a relief, after having to cope with annoying pseudo-bars that play music far too loud) and there are five television screens sitting idle about, no doubt resting following the business of the World Cup and the Open. I was pleased with this place. I would recommend it to anyone. An overenthusiastic thumbs-up again from me.

Should this not be sufficiently exciting then there is a dartboard on offer and on Friday or Saturday night there's a good chance there will be karaoke on offer. On these nights the standard of karaoke is really rather good and whilst it will be busy enough to create an atmosphere of sufficient calibre, you will not have to wait forever and a day to get a song in. The drink prices are pretty standard for the area, but if you check out the chalkboard out front either on entry or on your travels there you'll find that on some days the prices are cut for specific drinks - this board is well worth paying attention to if you're planning a visit.

I…read morethought it would be a typical old man pub, filled with drunk men by about 1pm, but I was pleasantly surprised with the clientele who drank in here when I came. Situated in the Tollcross area of Edinburgh, the International Bar is just a short walk from the city centre and is really close to the Meadows too so it is a convenient place to reach. This is a fairly traditional pub, with a dart board, and there is a good atmosphere in here as the staff are always cheerful and inviting and there is a jukebox which always plays out music playing. The drinks in the International Bar are pretty cheap and they serve a wide range of different beers and ales. The house red wine here is tasty and doesn't taste like vinegar which some you can find in other bars. The International Bar frequently has speical offers available which are worth while, especially as there is no student discount on offer. The food is also worth a try as they serve the standard pub meals such as fish and chips, burgers and baked potatoes, which are particularly tasty - really well cooked with fluffy potato in the centre and a crispy skin - yum! The International Bar does show A LOT of football matches, so perhaps it isn't one for the non-football fans on a football night as it can get pretty rowdy in here. A decent bar which is worth a visit.

I got the Buffalo cauliflower and a pint. £12... the cauliflower is only £5 so I feel like they just charged me a random price. My friend ordered the hummus and we were planning to share. They brought us the food with no plates or silverware. There were just 3 cauliflowers. Kind of steep for £7... the hummus was undersalted and next to it was a massive dollop of mayonnaise. What? The pita bread was flat and hard. The wait staff was made up of awkward kids who didn't know anything and responded strangely to basic sentences. Like when my friend ordered the hummus, the girl asked if she wanted to know pricing or portion. What? I will never come back unless I just want a pint outside and will double check the pricing since it's clear the workers here are utterly oblivious.
