This is a difficult one this...
Dunfermline needed an adult (careful), pleasant slightly more sophisticated bar/diner for a long time. They got a coffee shop equivalent with the sister establishment, Reuben's. The bRuey was terrific; light bites that were not bog standard, a choice of rooms and nooks, a bit of style without being pretentious, and undoubtedly an emphasis on customer service.
So why three stars? it still pretty much has all the above, though it seems to have quietened in recent months. Could it be something to do with the beer?
Cos to be frank, it's awful. Part of the place's USP was their own, in-house ales and cider. Which is a great idea. As long as it tastes nice. But it doesn't. God knows I've tried; several times over...the blonde, the nut brown, the stout, etc, etc. I've even given the seasonal brews a go. The lager is the only one that is about palatable (and I say that as a long-time, committed ale drinker).
I know I'm not alone, though I do accept taste is subjective.
I wish they would even stock bottled beers. They could aim at continental/ artisan/ speciality types and not compete with their own brews? They could get a guest ale in?? Or they could get some quality control measures in place and realise that something isnae right.
Oh, and less 'dollybirds teetering on heels' serving. Trying too hard. read more
