While no place/school is perfect, we have been more than happy with this school and with ALA as a whole. They have a very traditional feel and still teach genuine American values that today's public schools are lacking in many cases. While we weren't sure initially on the uniform requirement, it has actually been a great thing and just adds to the structure these schools have. We are VERY fortunate in Arizona to have school choice and Charter school options, that has never been more evident than today. If you are tired of dealing with political teachers who seem to hate their job, give ALA a try. I'm glad we did. Cheers!

My 3 year old had scratches and patches ripped out of her hair. There was never any incident reports and I would always have to ask the teachers what happened. Their replies would be "I think....". My mom was the National Montessori Educator of the year back in the 90's and has been extremely impressed as well. When we have had questions about how things are handled we find that they handled discipline/education in a way that is directly aligned with Montessori principles and practices, which is why we choose this school. Communication has always been excellent and we recommend the school to anyone who desires a Montessori education.

My daugher is a seventh grader this year and loves her school! She seems to get along with her teachers well enough and her friends too. This is the first year she began riding a bus to school and she really likes it! I guess it's a cool thing to do nowadays... The school staff seem nice enough and appear to have their act together. The nurse has called a couple of times and was very informative and objective about my daughter's situations. She was patient and kind too. The front desk lady in the Administrative office remains busy but always seems to be on top of things. I am always pointed in the right direction when I show up to volunteer. I like organization and HJHS is well organized! They seem to run like a well-oiled machine. The gym bathrooms seem clean enough when we attended our daughter's volleyball games. My kids have been at St. John Bosco for two years now (currently grades 3 and K), and I only wish…read morewe had landed here sooner. Compared to other schools we've been at (a mix of private and public), SJB feels so much more like a community. In a perfect world I would love for my kids to have an old fashioned school experience - riding their bikes to school with all the neighborhood kids, everyone knowing everyone. But living in deep Ahwatukee, far from walking distance to any school, and in a neighborhood where kids go to at least 5 different public/charter/private elementary schools, that just wasn't going to happen. But the way SJB operates, it feels like the next best thing. If you're considering SJB, my best advice is to take a tour during the school day. Bonus if you can be there to witness a pickup/drop off, when all the parents and students are chatting and catching up in the courtyard like one big family. Once the school day starts you'll see such respectful kids and caring teachers working together in the classrooms as well as in the outdoor spaces. The academic standards are high, but the vibe is warm and welcoming. And because it's on the smaller side (50 kids per grade, max), the staff is able to work with students individually as needed, something that has been a huge benefit for my family. I'm so happy to have found the right school for us, especially knowing that my kids can thrive there all the way through 8th grade!

It's been quite a while since I attended this school, but there are still things my teachers taught…read moreme that I carry with me today. Mr. Higgins, my science teacher, had a rule that everyone had to raise their hand, even if we didn't know the answer. If he called on us and we didn't know, we were taught to say, "I don't know yet." That has genuinely stuck with me. I've brought that same mindset into my workplace, and it's amazing how much of a difference those three little letters can make. Not knowing something doesn't mean you can't learn it. I really hope Mr. Higgins is still teaching, and if he has moved on, I hope that mindset has continued with the teachers who came after him. Ms. Holloway was an amazing English teacher and someone I'll always remember. She knew how to build real rapport with her students and make you feel comfortable in her classroom. Even after all this time, I still remember the way she connected with us and how much I looked up to her. Ms. Patricia, my ceramics teacher, taught me another lesson I've carried with me. She was very clear about the boundaries in her classroom and held us to them, while still giving us plenty of freedom to be ourselves and be creative. As I've gotten older, I've realized how important that was. There is freedom within boundaries, but you have to respect where the line is. These all seem like such small things when you're sitting in a middle school classroom, but they ended up having a real impact on how I approach life today. I'm grateful I went to a school with teachers who taught lessons that went far beyond the classroom.
