That building is the Cape Coral Art Center now. I just went today and I'm 52 years old. Lots of memories... I especially remember Mr. Haines and his mini steam locomotive displays; his wife taught me violin and that's my career now. Don't forget you can rent movies and ebooks on your tablets and streamer boxes without stepping in the door! Also I've been voting there since I turned 18... everyone is so nice! I've done violin show and tell for the littles a few times at the various libraries in the system.

There's lots of seating and even some separate rooms to read or do work in. There is a third floor with a coffee shop and book store that both weren't open when I visited. The library itself is beautiful! Murals, art, shells, and history of Fort Myers is all over the library. This is definitely the better library in SWFL, certainly worth taking a drive out for.

We walked in and the nicest, most friendly young lady with a quick sense of humor helped us obtain our first library card in FL - finally! Now I won't need to purchase as many books for book club or leisure reading. But, she really made it a fun exchange. I quickly located two books on my list, looked up a third that I couldn't find (not available at this library) and we used the self-check out kiosk, which was very easy and quick. We visited around 2:30 PM on a Mondayin July and it was not very busy at all. I will most definitely be back to return today's books and borrow some more!

I was excited for the new library to reopen, but they made the story time room so small that only a few kids can attend, and registration fills up instantly. Now we cannot attend story time and my daughter is very disappointed. This was poor planning on their part to make the room so small very few can attend.

There are actually two components, Community Park and a 40,000 sq. ft Recreation Center. Admission to the park and parking is free. Recreation Center has a one-time membership fee $10 individual or $20 for two adults or $25 for family! This 55-acre South Lee County facility features an amphitheater, picnic shelters and pavilion with charcoal stand, off-leash dog park, children playground, bocce courts, beach or sand volleyball courts, 5K track field, and 18-hole disc golf course with 5 lakes. Two historic homes were relocated inside the park and run by Estero Historical Society! The recreation center offers leagues such as adult basketball, adult volleyball, wheelchair basketball, and pickleball. For additional fee, you can sign up for fitness classes, Wood Craving, Arts and Craft, Ballroom dancing, tap dancing, Karate, table tennis and other classes. The gym is a popular venue for Gymnastic, Basketball, and volleyball competitions and tournaments. A fully equipped weight room is available to build up your stamina and tune up your muscle! For the wood pushers, youngsters and adults can compete in chess games on Saturday! You can walk your dogs or take the leashes off inside the dog park. A dog washing area is available to clean your dog before you go home! You want to test your frisbee skills, you can try the 18 holes disc golf course. It is a very scenic walk and good frisbee skill is mandatory otherwise it will go into the lakes. The facility is well run and staff is friendly. Go and try the Estero Community Park/Recreation Center to sweat a little for fitness or have a birthday party at one of pavilion or compete at a beach volley ball game or a pickleball game! The only thing I do wish, is that all pet owners understood the importance of keeping pups on leash where kiddos play. Especially since there is also a nearby dog park and it's not really fair to other dogs who are leashed and may not know the general attitude of the puppies running freely around the park. This, is not a reflection of Estero community park, however. The human condition after-all, hasn't anything to do with the park itself; more so its one-off visitors whom don't seem to consider their neighbors; I suppose.

Marissa was a joy and very knowledgeable. She spoke to us in a kind manner and was patient with us making sure we had the information that we needed. Many people surrounding the area were pretty grumpy. Marissa really was very helpful and made sure she did everything with a genuine smile. People like her are gems! She helped make what could have been a chaotic moment into a pleasant and calm time. She really made our day.

I had to report for Jury Duty selection here. I needed to be there by 8am the day after MLK…read moreHoliday. First thing you need to know is that to gain entry, you'll be going through a security screening very similar to that of TSA's security procedures at airports. The Deputies manning these stations were professional and thorough. It didn't take long. Reminder, no drinks can be brought through the checkpoint. After a successful screening, I found the Jurors waiting room and found a seat in a large room that could probably accommodate 300 people. I'd say the room was probably 60% filled and over the next 2 hours, at different times, a bailiff or deputy would take a large group upstairs to where 1 of 3 Judges would be starting court proceedings by first selecting Jurors. Before this however, we received important information from workers in the waiting room such as parking, reimbursement, cell phone policy, and cafeteria location. Everyone was professional and helpful. (BTW, there's a special designated parking lot, free for Jurors. You only need to show your summons to the gate attendant in order to park there. It's about a block and a half away.) I was in the third group called. We went up to the 7th floor where a circuit court Judge was planning on trying a felony case. The Judge was very well spoken, had a genuine enthusiasm for his work, and explained in as simplest of terms as possible what the jurors selection would entail. Two attorneys for the state, as well as two attorneys for the defendant, were given chances to question all 41 of us in what is known as "voir dire", in order to finalize the selection of Jurors. Just before 5pm they selected 7 Jurors out of our group. I was not one of them. Just before releasing us, the Judge thanked us and stated that we had fulfilled our Jurors Summons obligations for 1 year. My overall experience was very positive. Every one was very helpful, positive, and professional. The building and rooms are very clean and modern. One should bring a jacket or sweater as the rooms are quite cool. Hours are: Monday-Friday: 7:30am - 5:00pm

If you lose your summons they can still check you in if you have ID with you . Of course only a judge can excuse people from jury duty but people still asked. Think I'm going to be here all day.... Well at least they have HGTV on.....

This historic marker is on the site of Fort Myers from which the city takes it's name. Before the…read morefort was here, the land was a Native American Calusa settlement hundreds of years ago. The site is now the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center. Marker 128 was installed in 1965 by the Florida Board of Parks and Historic Memorials in cooperation with The Southwest Florida Historical Society. Florida became a US Territory in 1821 and forts were built throughout Florida to offer settlers protection from the Seminoles. One of the first forts to be built during the Seminole Indian Wars was a fort named for Lieutenant John Harvie. The fort was reestablished in 1850 and named Fort Myers, honoring Lieutenant Abraham C. Myers who was the son-in-law of the commander of Fort Brooke in Tampa. The Seminole War ended in 1858. During the Civil War Fort Myers was once more re-activated by Unioun troops looking to cut off food supply to Confederate troops in Georgia and to feed Federal troops patrolling the coast off of Sanibel. The Southernmost battle of the Civil War, a fight between Northern and Southern troops occurred across the Caloosahatchee River in 1865. In 1866, Manuel A, Gonzalez and Joseph Vivas took up residence at the recently abandoned fort. Other settlers arrived and this led to a post office when it was platted in 1876. In 1885 of the community of 349 people was incorporated as Fort Myers. Some of the wood from the fort was used in the construction of the downtown buildings.
