The ideal spot to grab a meal's worth of vegetables…read more PRICE: Inexpensive. SERVICE: Not unhelpful. QUALITY: Pretty standard for a greengrocer. CHOICE: Plenty. Fruit and vegetables outside, and plenty more inside. Argyll Place is probably one of my favourite shopping streets in Edinburgh. Odd, I know, but it contains three of my most frequented shops: the Bike Works, Al Haj's and Nadia's Fruit and Vegetables. This place is smaller than its next door neighbour, but has a much wider vegetables selection at a much lower price. It is perfect (indeed, this is what I do nine out of ten times) for nipping to on the bike, grabbing a few different vegetables and then heading back to cook dinner, having spent perhaps a quid without the prospect of vegetables then going to waste at the bottom of the fridge. It is open until an ideal time too: 8pm everyday (usually), and this of course means that even a late night dinner can be created using vegetables from here. Their wide selection caters for most, if not all, meal types, and are never in too bad shape. Of course, unlike supermarkets, fruit from here tends to be ripe and ready to eat... Overall a winner then? Definitely. Though not as smart as its next door neighbour, Nadia's is the perfect greengrocers.

Not sure what else to say on this as it is a veg shop other than thumbs up from me. Tip: They have reduced items in bags outside which is normally 8 - 10 peppers for 79 pence or on occassion bags for 49 pence of items that need used that day. If you are making soup or similiar that day its ideal.

Banana Republic in Portobello is one of the few that I've seen in the city. I love the smell of greengrocers. There's something about the smell of fresh fruit and vegetables that just can't be matched. Although small, this place was packed with all sorts of fruit and veg, with a great deal on the pavement in front to tempt the passers by. No doubt this place is facing stiff competition, and we'd do well to use places like this to stop the supermarkets taking over completely.

All the produce is laid out old fashioned style - eg. on the pavement so you pick what you want and then head inside to pay. There are also some more basic items inside too. It is a busy wee place, especially on a Saturday morning, but there is something gratifying about shopping 'local' or independent and selecting the veggies and fruits you will be using through the week. I have always found that the fruits and veggies I have bought here have always lasted well if I store them correctly and prices are reasonable. As I don't live down here, I'm not here every week but I usually stock up when I'm meeting friends or doing a Findlay's run.

I'm a big fan of independent greengrocers. Sadly, there aren't many of them about these days, but that is what makes places like Tattie Shaws so special. With a great range of fruit and veg from all across the world, Tattie's supplies look full of flavour and ripe like they've just been picked off a plant. It's very reasonably priced and they also stock a variety of herbs and other such cooking ingredients. The staff are pretty alert and keen to help if you need anything. But most of all, I was so impressed with the quality of the produce. With the vibrant colours and fresh appearances, Tattie Shaw's stocks both homegrown and international fruit and veg. It's great that they represent local farmers and suppliers, but their more exotic offerings look equally as fresh - they've definitely been shipped in recently. As it's still the Scottish strawberry season, I'd recommend trying Tattie's for some of Fife's best berries!

The guy who runs this place (whose name i'm always forgetting) is a lovely but no nonsense chap, who knows his produce. He sells pretty much any fresh produce that you could care to buy. He seems to have a lot of everything all year round so he must be getting some of it from abroad but I know he also does seasonal stuff too. Ask him what's good and he'll suggest something! It's also handily on my walk home from work (assuming i get out in time before he closes!)

The service is different from what you get in America. There is never a rush and as always at any restaurant here, no tip is expected. Keep places like this alive with locals. Tip, and help places like this survive and thrive! As almost every cafe I have been to in Scotland, dogs are always welcome! I love that! Always greeted with a smile and 'Hello' and his wife always compliments me on my dresses/hair ~ so nice! Certainly service with a smile. I usually pop in for the more 'exotic' vegetables/spices/herbs (no, not those type of 'exotic herbs', tut-tut!) and the odd packet of noodles or chilli sauce. I love their more exotic and Asian variety of produce as let's face it, you can pretty much get apples/potatoes/etc.. anywhere but West Indian Hot Sauce or some quality spices are a wee bit harder to track down. The only reason it's not 5 stars is because sometimes their produce isn't the freshest I've seen; it's edible but if like me you don't eat a dinosaur (herbivore of course) load of fruit/veggies a day then it'd not last long in your hoose before you have to toss it. I'm all for supporting the small shop/business owners over the mega giants (Te*co to name but one) so shopping in these smaller, local and (most usually) friendlier shops is always good for the soul and your local area.

Ahmed's is a bit different and I like to save the pounds so I am keen to go to avoid the corporate empire that is the supermarket to go to this pleasant shop. You get my vote!

Even stepping foot into this place makes me feel healthy enough to justify cake for supper…read more I'm not going to lie - i'm not a healthy eater. But hailing from the city of all things organic (Vancouver), I like to play the part that I am. Somehow, having an open bag of chia seeds in the house, that I occasionally remember to throw into smoothies when I occasionally remember to MAKE smoothies, makes me feel less guilty about eating Corn Flakes for dinner while I'm slogging through emails. This makes me an adult right? That doesn't mean that the act of buying a meal that doesn't look like it was constructed by a five year old, doesn't tickle my fancy - I love nothing more then following up a Corn Flakeian dinner with a good ol' fashioned organic almond yogurt. Life is about the balance. I also have a deep seeded belief in only using biodegradable and clean house hold products. So when i'm not doing the best in my personal well being - at least i'm looking after the planet as a whole. This place ticks off a few major factors in my strange collaborative idea of "healthy living". First off, it stocks an impressive array of house hold items and is one of the first places i've found that carries multiple lines of personal care items - from Burts Bees to good for ya toothpaste - it was a one stop shop for both my washroom & under the sink. Secondly - it stocks pretty much everything you need to justify future unhealthy meals. From organic quinoa to virgin, cold pressed coconut oil, it's simply screaming: look how healthy you are?! Why yes, you can eat ice cream for dinner! But as many a person as said - living healthy (or in my case, buying excuses) can be pricey. What I will note, is as a newly landed expat, this place IS cheaper than the haunts back home and for that i'm thankful, but compared to the digs you can pick up elsewhere - yes, it's going to cost you an extra dollar. My tip if you fear the price tag? This funky little blue and green ball we're living on needs all the help it can get. If you can't stomach the whole nine yards of good food organic, pare it down. Spend the extra £1 for your dish soap, laundry & shampoo and keep the nasty stuff out of the drains. Then stock up on the hard to find items, or the ones you use frequently and leave the bits & bobs for a cheaper place. Nothing is better than proper, virgin, organic, cold pressed olive oil. Nothing. Will definitely be popping in here time to time to stock up on the must haves. If I could track down a spot to buy E3Live in town, i'd have all my cake justifying staples back in place.
