On my sister's last day in Edinburgh and on her way to the airport, I took her to visit this tea store this morning at 10:00 sharp. Since it seemed to be not open yet (although the working hours are from 10:00) we lightly knocked on the door to attract the attention of the people inside. What happened next was a very young man with a long hair, obviously a worker of this place, opening the door, blocking our way inside and yelling at us in a disrespectful and unfriendly manner. He screamed something along the lines of "don't you dare touch the door again, we are not open yet" and when we asked when will the store be open because we were on our way to the airport and wanted to buy a lot of tea gifts for our friends and family, he started raising his voice again. He continued repeating "you can go inside only when I tell you to go inside, don't touch the door yourselves", nudging us to leave the store's door front, which we eventually did. We don't usually leave negative reviews but this was a really unpleasant and embarrassing situation, especially because she was my guest in Edinburgh and her experience was an amazing one before this morning. Prior to this situation I was a very loyal buyer at the Jordan Valley tea shop and I had enjoyed many times the hospitality of an elderly and a very friendly person working there. However, the young man's behavior this morning was odd to say the least and this is definitely not the way people should be treated where they want to spend their money. For all the reasons mentioned above, I will not buy tea in this store anymore. The purpose of this review was to warn others of how disrespectful unfortunately they are and suggest you go to some other tea shop. read more

It's been many years since the last time I visited this store back in my undergraduate days. I am pleasantly surprised to find that the store has remained at the same location for such a long time. Sal (the owner) is one of the kindest, most generous, and warm people to be found anywhere in this crazy world of ours. I will never forget his generous offerings of free ready meals, pasta salads, hummus, baba ganoush or bread as I went in to buy a small box of tea or a bottle of soya milk. These free gifts often came with freshly brewed chai, and some tips on how to make the best 'pizza' from olive oil, zatar, and flatbread. JV is a great place to get all of your staple wholefoods, and the emphasis has always been on healthy, simple food, rather than supplements or strange diet trends. I hope this little shop will be around for many many more years to come. read more

There's a real middle-eastern vibe about this part of Edinburgh, with it's numerous falafel and curry take-away outlets. Jordan Valley is a fine purveyor of wholefoods, teas and organic goodies - they carry a huge range of tinned and dried foodstuffs, and I am a frequent purchaser of their salad & falafel wraps and veggie pasties at lunchtime when I want a change from the usual Tesco sandwiches. A baba-ghanoush wrap, a veggie pasty and a quinoa & ginger bar and I'm in veggie lunch heaven. They have a fantastic selection of speciality teas, cheeses, oils, dips, drinks, exotic lotions, seeds.... it really is a wholefood emporium par excellence. Some of the stuff is a little on the pricey side, so be careful as it's very easy to spend more than you want to in here (I won't be buying the litre carton of coconut water at £4.10 again!). Edinburgh does the wholefoods thing rather well, and Jordan Valley does it with an extra exotic twist of Arabic spice. Fantastic. read more

I'm glad I am amongst so many other avid tea lovers with my fellow yelpers. To suggest I am somewhat of a huge tea fan is quite an understatement. And yes Jordan Valley is a great place to stock up your selection of not just regular ordinary teas but speciality tea. I really do enjoy their Yogi Green Tea. Like others there are teas here I not heard of, so I enjoy trying out new stuff. But don't confuse Jordan Valley with a tea shop. Oh no, that's just a bonus. This shops is actually a health food store/deli specialising in Mediterranean and near east food stuffs. This is where you can get your spices, feta and humus. They also do a great range of general health food sort of thingies, so if you're in the mood for a general healthy grocery shop, you might want to just check out what Jordan Valley has to offer first. With Tescos right next door Jordan Valley does a good job of providing health and speciality foods at (mostly) affordable prices. read more

Jordan Valley is a fantastic health and whole foods shop on the Southside, I regularly make detours to drop in when I'm walking about town. It stocks all manner of teas and dried goods (rice, grains, beans, fruits), but the highlights for me are the two refrigerated areas. The large chiller (to your right as you enter the shop) has a great selection of their own brand of veggie dips (hoummous, baba ghanoush, feta), veggie pates (chilli bean, lentil, spinach) and their own pasties (veggie sausage rolls, Mexican bean, sundried tomato and olive etc) - these items are so popular that you can find them stocked in a number of shops around the city, including Real Foods. If you manage to time your visit well, some of these items may have been reduced to 50p, bargain! The refrigerated counter also holds a large amount of goodies; my favourite being the falafel, which are available in a few varieties (including hempseed). Prices here are reasonable, the food is healthy and there are lots of tasty things to choose from. Sorted. read more

I love to browse in this shop- it has a great selection of teas (some of which I had never heard at all) and it basically serves as a deli of mostly Mediterranean foods- so this is the spot I guarantee for my stock of tahini, feta and halva .They also have a great selection of organic dried products, and a personal fave are the nachos- although pricey they are oh-so-good! They advertise for head,neck and shoulder massages as well, and basically it acts as a live healthier store. It's peanut butter jelly time! Put it in m'mouth, put it in m'mouth. And weird Lebanese spice time. And haggis flavored tofu time. And choco-covered banana time. And dried fruits and nut time. As a begrudging vegetarian, I am always in a huffed search for alternative stuff I can eat in this city o' potatoes and cheese (note: i f*cking love potatoes and cheese). And man oh man does this place deliver. It has all sorts of Arabic delights, 6 billion flavors of hummus, teas flavored with anything you could imagine - yes - banana crack-cocaine tea, and veggie snacks and treats as far as the eye can see! I confess: I'm a nut butter addict; peanut, almond, cashew. So, finding Meridian's new coconut peanut butter almost made me do a little dance right there and then. I waited till I got home and went for my first taste, spoon in hand. The produce at Jordan Valley is great with an expansive selection of herbal teas, nut butters and a huge selection of their very own concoctions. As we were browsing, I heard snippets of 'humous' and 'falafel' from the counter and, when it came to paying up, I was met with the lovable owner. - 'Try our humous!' He gave me a taste on an oatcake. Delicious. He then boasted of the falafel and a particular variety which he makes called super falafel. Again, we were given a taste. 'No, you didn't get a goji berry in that piece!' he said, handing me another piece. Delicious, delicious, delicious and bursting with goodness. The owner's energy and passion is truly infectious. The cost of my shop here was cheaper than similar shops and the experience a far more interesting one. Jordan Valley recently started selling their own supplements. I was amazed at how cheap their Maca was and I bought some as an energy boost for smoothies. - I had stopped buying Maca because it's a costly powder but I'm so pleased I can get it at a reasonable price. Jordan Valley is a delight and, with plans for a tea room downstairs, I look forward to seeing them grow. The lovely owner gave me a free tub of humous and a cup of fresh spiced tea for the road. (Again, made in house and delicious too!) I left with the biggest of smiles. This; this is why we shop local. I will come to Jordan Valley whenever I can. read more

Vegans of Edinburgh, Jordan Valley is your saviour. I'm not vegan but cook for one on a semi-regular basis and Jordan Valley makes this so much easier. They have a huge range of fresh vegan products. I love the different types of tofu/soya burgers and meat that they have here. It makes even a simple stirfry much tastier and easier. They have a huge range of vegan and veggie wraps/sausage roll type things and various ridiculously tasty dips. Basically for a vegan picnic that non-vegans will happily eat all of and not really realise that it's vegan it's the best shop ever. The other serious plus of the store is the ridiculous amount of teas that they have. A whole wall of them. If you can think of it as a tea it's probably sold here. Great little place in Newington for special diet and Middle Eastern foods, plus lots of other goodies. Newington is well served for special diet foods - Peckhams does fab gf bread and NFE, lots of healthy foods. Here, there are all sorts of gluten free goodies, helpfully with notes on the shelf (gluten free) so you know what is suitable. Pastas, biscuits, crackers, fruit and nut bars as well as noodles and flours are all here. I had just stocked up at other stores but this will be my first stop next time. Well worth checking out. Even if you are not gf, the range of tea is fab and they stock lots of the teapigs flavours too :-) read more

This is a surprising place, the name suggests a Middle Eastern grocery, the windows display suggests a tea shop. I guess it's a little bit of both. You can get every tea imaginable here, some tahini, some olive oils, ready made meals such as mujjadarah with vegan chilli, felafal ofcourse, nuts etc. A nice health food store with a Middle Eastern twist! read more

I am an absolute tea maniac, I will drink any kind of tea I just can't get enough of the stuff. Whenever I travel I have to take a supply of teabags with me just in case I can't find any. Jordan Valley stocks a whole host of tea including my favourite; Yogi Chai which is especially good on a cold winters day. They also stock Yogi rose teabags which are delicious too. I can spend ages looking at all the different teas so thankfully the staff don't mind customers having a leisurely browse and are always friendly and helpful. Last time I was in they'd just mopped the floor and there's a sign outside saying that the floor gets exceptionally slippy when wet - they certainly weren't kidding as I almost went arse over tit, that would have been embarrassing. In addition to tea, Jordan Valley stocks lots of organic health foods such as humus, chickpea spread which is great on toast and various other dips. They have various other foods that you don't usually find in Tesco and if you're looking for something a little bit different then pop in to see what tickles your fancy! read more

I lived in Jordan my whole life! i was so excited to go to this shop because i'd missed home and needed something to remind me of it , so i went there and i was really mad , yes i was very angry with the fact that they did not have any real jordanian stuff ! just a bunch of gulf spices and indian spices and different other things that dont really relate to jordan! as for their prices , you can toooootally find the same indian / arabic stuff like cheese and spices for cheaper in the maqboul's supermarket . i did see they have their own products some healthy stuff, which i would not try because well known healthy brands are cheaper! oh and there sweets and falafel , look like anything but the real thing that is sold in the middle east! read more

This is a nice wee shop, that you could browse for an hour given the time. It is crammed with stuff, and have lots of options for vegans/veggies. They also have an AMAZING tea selection, ranging from £2-5 pounds, but they have loads, it is impossible to choose. They also sell chai concentrate, sort of like Tazo in the U.S., which you just mix with milk. They have everything from sweets, snacks, chocolate, vegan cheese, imported foods, olives, spices, cooking ingredients, some frozen foods, juices, dips, pre-made meals and soups. Loads of new things to try and all fairly well priced. They also have lots of Middle-Eastern food options, including good pita. If you need something a bit different, try this place. read more

It was in this store that I learnt it's not always wise to ask someone where they come from; it's got more implications that it seems! Despite this awkward conversation, I've been back several times and it's got a great atmosphere. The many spices and foods you may never have heard of give it a unique, musty smell and I've noticed it's usually quite dark in here. Jordan Valley is known amongst my friends as the "Palestinian, Indian, Jordanian Store", probably incorrect on many levels, but it gives you an idea of the kind of products they sell. It has to be a very rare tea that you won't find in there, and they've also got an expansive range of exotic (and healthy!) snacks as well. Aside from foodstuff, there's a further section with a variety of organic health products (vitamins, lotions, etc) and I personally frequent this store for their 100% pure olive oil soap; it's a great deal at just a pound a bar. read more

I make a point of visiting Jordan Valley everytime my travels take me to Edinburgh. I find the selection of vegan, vegetarian and gluten free foods here exceptional. The quality of the produce is unsurpassed in Edinburgh. Highly nutritious and delicious fresh produce. My particular favorites are the quinoa chocolate bars, yum yum! I absolutely love them. I always find the staff very friendly, helpful and generous. They are very knowledgeable about their products and are keen to give you samples to try. I remember being there a while ago and being treated to some special Jordan Valley recipe chia tea, awesome. Looking forward to visiting again next time I'm in town :) read more

I love this shop I can spend ages looking around( I Know I probably hover around like a shop lifter ). But always find a few quality bits and bobs to fit my budget. During our recent 3 week visit to Edinburgh, I discovered Jordan Valley not far from our apartment. it was my favorite place in Edinburgh to find food. Everything I bought (yogurt, olives, spice, babaganoush, meridian cherry fruit spread, etc.) was top quality and delicious. There were so many things to choose from, and so little time! Great little middle eastern style market/store. Went in just because I have walked by so many times I decided I couldnt wait any longer. Place is great! Has great prices considering buying some of the stuff at different places costs a lot more. I especially loved the olive oils and the teas they had. Good place to get vegetarian stuff such as the falafel and other goodies in the cold section. I felt like Winnie the Poo when I saw all the honey they had especially the honey comb for sale which I love. I settled for a jar of honey though which turned out to be a mix of glucose and honey which I was not to happy about. I suppose I should have read the label but still honey shouldnt be ruined like that......but I loved the jar. But besides that a cool little shop with a bunch of different Mediterranean awesomeness that I love so much. Jordan Food is on a stretch of a kilometer that boasts four supermarket chains, as well as numerous produce shops. Yet it stands out to me because of the quality, variety and the price of their offerings. Jordan Valley is a food store that specializes in dry goods- typically, of European and Middle Eastern varieties. There is a refrigerated section that boasts cheese and dairy products as well as very reasonably priced snacks- vegetarian for the most part as well as some vegan. This is a good place to stop into if you are in the area and are hankering for a vegan/vegetarian nibble- to take away of course. There is also an extensive olive selection- the pepper stuffed olives are a favourite- though not for those who can't take the heat! Jordan Valley specializes in many things: Rice: the varieties found here (long grain, short grain, Basmati, wild rice) would take you to two or three supermarkets at least to find- (some are less than 0.70 pence for a good sized bag- cheapest sushi rice I've found in Edinburgh). Olive oil (you can buy restaurant sized tins and refill your bottles), tea: their selection is the biggest I've seen, baklava (many, many varieties) and dried spices (you can find dried flowers here, perfect for adding the extra special touch to your dishes). This is the place for those who love the aesthetic of Valvona & Crolla but lack the funds to indulge. The family that runs it is also super nice and helpful- and on Tuesday nights- they are open late and have free tastings. Pretty stellar. read more

Stumbled across this shop when we visited Edinburgh for the day whilst holidaying nearby. I love healthfood shops, so just had to go in when I saw it - and I am SOOO glad I did. Myself and my daughter are veggie, myself and my son are allergic to dairy, so often when we are away from home, our food choices are somewhat limited! We first saw the range of chocolate - many dairy free, so this got us excited straight away. Then we were spoilt for choice with the flapjack/seed bars; and when we got to the 'fridge and saw the range of pies and pasties I was practically jumping up and down with glee! After a long time browsing and choosing we went to pay, and was told by the lovely youjng man at the counter that his father made the cakes/bars/pasties etc. He asked if we liked hummus, which I said I loved, and baba ghannoush, which I said I had never tried. He then gave us a pot of each, along with a superfood felafel to try. Everything we bought was absolutely delicious, so much choice - we don't have anywhere like this back home in Yorkshire! Upon returning home I searched the internet hoping there would be a mail order service, but alas! So I don't know whether that is something you could consider, or alternatively come and open a store down here in Yorkshire, I will happily run it for you - although I am sure I would spend my entire wage on goodies! At approximately 225 miles away, I think it's a little far to do my weekly shop, but would urge anyone visiting Edinburgh to seek out this shop and try out their wares - and oh if you live around my way, bring me some back! read more
