Although this place has been in business for about three years, I discovered it only yesterday, by happenstance, when I was looking for some place else. This Yelp review is to help point others to this little gem "on purpose". If you're looking for a landmark to find Earth's Art - Tumalo Garden Market as you drive from Bend to Tumalo, it's in the long red and white building that you can't miss seeing from the road. But this garden store and nursery is tucked in the back of that building. BOTTOM LINE: This will be on my regular rotation for garden plant and accent shopping! If you enjoy Eastside Gardens in Bend (I think it's among the best of local nurseries - http://www.yelp.com/biz/eastside-gardens-bend ) you might think of this as a much smaller version of that. WHAT IT IS / WHAT IT SELLS: Part indoor garden shop with amazingly healthy house plants (as all of us in Central Oregon's high dessert climate know, this can be hard to achieve here), garden tools, garden hats, birdhouses, bird feeders, pots and an array of other things. Part outdoor garden nursery area with gravel walkways leading to green houses of pre potted displays as well as perennials in sizes from four inch pots to gallon containers to larger. Some vegetable starts are also in the mix. The nursery extends beyond the greenhouses and you find many kinds of trees for sale there. Some of the plant containers and birdhouses and garden accents are made by local people. Tip: Look at the cool planters made by a local guy out of defunct propane tanks. There is a reason Garden Arts sells out of these. But more than simply retail sales are here. Earth's Art - Tumalo Garden Market also offers classes, like an upcoming Wildlife Gardening class (my favorite way to garden as my Yelp profile reveals). They also provide services to help with landscaping and home agriculture. VALUE: Prices on all things seemed very reasonable. We bought two pretty planted pots to use in a cart we keep on our front porch and we paid about 25% less than we would have for something of similar quality elsewhere. Not to mention we probably couldn't have put these together as artfully on our own. (Note: Like them on Facebook and you'll get 10% off your purchase.) VERY FRIENDLY, KNOWLEDGEABLE STAFF: The woman who runs the store, Linda, is enthusiastic about what the owner is doing here and a font of information and uber helpful. Delightful. ACCESSIBILITY: The parking lot has well over 50 spaces but only one accessible stall, so code minimums are not met here, and it is not well marked. The good news, though, is the lot is paved and not gravel. Also good news, the garden store is level in and accessible including the loo. The bad news is large loose gravel at the nursery would make it impossible for a wheelchair user - or someone pushing a stroller. On the day I visited, a user of Canadian crutches and another user of a walker were struggling on the large, loose gravel. THIS N THAT: 1) FARMERS MARKET: During 2012, the Tumalo Farmers Market is held here on Thursday afternoons from 3:00 - 6:00. Started the end of May and will run through September. 2) TUMALO ART WORKS (TAW): This is located in the same complex and has for sale the work of local craftsman and artists. This is my new favorite plant shop in Central Oregon! I read some of the bad reviews on here and one in particular is definitely caused by user error. This place is fabulous! I could stay here for hours. The staff was super helpful and friendly. Their selection is fantastic and prices are more than fair. I love how the indoor plants are placed in the store with the recommended placement from your windows for your homes. We went here two days in a row not too long after they opened up here in Redmond, and both days were a really bad experience as far as customer service. Day 1 my husband and I came in an hour before closing time, and we felt extremely rushed and unwelcome. No one wanted to actually talk to me about their plants, no passion at all. I let them know how excited we were to have a local plant shop in town and I didn't receive any warmth back. We even left with a plant and were pleased with the price. I thought, "maybe it's just a rainy day, maybe it's the stress of opening week, I'll look past it today" as hospitality/customer service is a huge deal for me. Day 2 my husband and I came in much earlier on a sunnier day hoping for a different experience, and it was so bad I will never ever go back. The owner was awful, sarcastic, treated me like I was stupid, talked to me like I was a 12 year old. We may look young but do NOT speak to my husband and I like we are children. The owner raised his voice at my husband a couple times and treated us poorly in front of their other customers. Super embarrassing for us. They didn't even want to sell us the plant we bought. It was a horrible experience. Now a different younger guy who helped us outside was absolutely wonderful, but as far as the male owner and an older woman (don't want to assume it's a wife?) I was extremely underwhelmed and thoroughly disappointed. I will never spend another dime here. Really disappointing because the selection and pricing are decent, but nothing is worth how disrespectfully we were treated. I went here for the first time two weekends ago. Looked around, saw some plants that interested me and the two staff members I encountered were very nice. I went back last week to purchase some plants and the woman working inside where the indoor plants are was rude bordering on hostile. It was very uncomfortable. When we left I said something to my husband and he said "I noticed that too! I wonder what we did wrong?" I liked the selection and the indoor plants but probably won't be back and risk getting treated like trespassers. read more

I was really troubled today. I bought several plants (all deer proof) yesterday late afternoon. Went outside to plant them and the two Smoke plants were eaten, one almost to the nub). Took them back and they would not let me exchange them for two of the same price. Only gave me credit for one and that's 14.99 they pocketed off me. The have a good selection and were nice but this policy is terrible! I won't be back. read more

This place is very special, and I say that as a compliment, not sarcastically. It's set up almost like a mini park, and spending time here is really inspiring. There is a store, an area where they sell produce (seasonally), honey and jams/jellies, and then across the parking lot are the greenhouses and outdoor areas. They sell greenhouses (and will even set them up for you), bee hives, garden ornaments, trellises, pottery, and of course, plants and trees. Everything is beautifully displayed and you can even walk inside the greenhouse models. There is a mini "canyon walk" that showcases some native plants and gives you ideas for your garden, and the area where they have the fruit trees is like a baby forest. The owner/manager is super friendly and is obviously insanely passionate about plants. It's very infectious and we really enjoyed speaking with her. The staff is really friendly as well. Prices are fair and I feel like the products here are high quality, and they are definitely invested in giving you good gardening advice, and helping your garden grow successfully. I was excited to finally be able to check out this nursery. I tried calling in advance to inquire about the tropical plants in stock and the number was not in operation. I arrived and was greeted with beautiful hanging baskets. Walking inside was an array of succulents (burro tail and string of pearls), several sansevieras, zz, hanging pothos and peperomia, and large spider plants. The woman working came across as really off-put by my presence. I deduce she was the owner as she was pricing plants. After awhile and trying to engage her about plants she seemed to warm up. I was hoping to find Fox Farm products and was disappointed to see Miracle Grow. I mentioned to the woman the number on the website was not working and she said that was "the old number from the Tumalo location." I am a huge plant lover and never patronized that business given the horrible reviews. Needless to say I'm glad I went in to check this location out. I purchased a hanging peperomia but I will stick to my favorite, friendly, locally owned nursery in Bend. read more

After seeing an advertisement on TV we decided to check out Earth's Art on Sunday (July 19). We were impressed by the gas station remodel, now an oasis of plants, pottery, water fountains, and tropical plants. We went to Earth's Art looking for plants and a water fountain. The fountain we decided on was quoted at $1,450 with an optional setup fee of $140. While we were inside the building looking at plants and fountains, we met another employee who showed us other fountains and we also discussed some of the tropical plants they had inside. By the way, both employees were very helpful and pleasant. When we told the woman inside that we really liked one of the fountains outside she asked that we show her and we did. While outside she quoted the price of the fountain to be $1,495 but wasn't sure and that she would check. We said that wasn't necessary right now, we would go home and discuss whether the fountain will work for us. Sunday night we chose a spot in our backyard for the fountain and decided to return to Earth's Art on Monday to purchase it. Monday morning I called the cell number listed on the business card and spoke with someone about the fountain and I was informed that it could be delivered and setup on Thursday or Friday. The setup fee was $140. Monday afternoon we were back at Earth's Art to measure the fountain's base so we could level an area in our yard for the setup. After measuring the fountain, I asked if there was any discount since we were buying the display model. The answer was no discount, then I asked is the price $1450 or $1495, that we had been quoted two different figures. The employee went inside to ask and he when he returned, he said the price was $1650 and that the setup was $180. At that point we decided to leave. Obviously, we were disappointed, we live in Bend and had made two trips to Redmond to purchase a fountain and we thought it was a done deal. Monday afternoon I checked the manufacturer's website and noted several garden centers in the Portland area that sell the same fountain. The price averaged $1250. I'd rather support a local business but I don't appreciate the way we were treated at Earth's Art. Increasing the price of the fountain by $200 and the setup by $40 is suspicious and rude. Conclusion: When shopping at Earth's Art, get the price in writing or save yourself the frustration and shop elsewhere. read more

We were disappointed in Tumalo Garden Market. There seemed to be no one around who knew plants and where they were located. This was on a Saturday after the Master Garden Plant Sale and several of us were there! There are many better nurseries in the Redmond, Bend, and La Pine area. read more

I am writing to share my recent and very disappointing experience with Tumalo Garden Market. I purchased a "Garden Party" at a local school's auction, which was to include a gardening class, pizza made on their pizza oven, and wine for myself and 10 friends. I paid several hundred dollars for this package and thought I was buying a fantastic evening with friends. I followed the instructions on the gift certificate and called to setup a date a month in advance. Then I invited 10 of my friends and all of us were super excited for the party (many of us were planning to purchase items from Tumalo Garden Market afterwards). Exactly 1 day before my party was to take place, I was informed that Tumalo Garden Market was cancelling my party and that they would not reschedule for a future date. I confronted the owner personally and got absolutely nowhere. No help, no apologies, and no explanation. What? What kind of business does something like this? Who would donate an item or service to a school auction and then not follow through? I am a very flexible person and would have understood if they needed to reschedule, but to flat out say that you will not fulfill your commitment without even trying to work something out with me is extremely rude, unprofessional, and disappointing to say the least. I live in Tumalo, which is a small community where word travels fast, and I guarantee that my friends and I will never shop at Tumalo Garden Market again... and I would warn you think twice yourself! read more
