Heard through the grapevine that J&D sold beef plate ribs AKA Dinosaur Bones (officially USDA cut…read more123A). They are located in the Pennsylvania Dutch Market in Hagerstown, not all THAT far from my home, and a nice drive on a hot summer day. The first person I asked didn't have a clue what I wanted; she pulled the manager over and he repeated that he was sorry but they didn't have any. (They did have flanken-cut short ribs which are the same basic cow part but cut into 1" slices across the bone, and from a bit further down the carcass). Oh well; it was a nice drive... But I then saw that Ben's BBQ a few stalls down had precooked Dino ribs. I asked where they got their ribs and they said "J&D". Huh. The nice guy behind the counter walked me down to J&D, hooked me up with the Head Guy What's In Charge, and he brought me a 7# cryovac pack of 8 untrimmed short ribs - not quite the same but closer than anything I've been able to find anywhere else. I bought 'em, brought 'em home, portioned them into 2-rib packs, and put three packs in the freezer for the future. Today I smoked the remaining 2-rib piece (about 2 pounds) on my pellet smoker. Seven hours at 250 degrees, wrapping in foil for the last hour, pulling them off the smoker at an internal temp of 200 degrees. After resting for an hour, Sposal Unit and i ate them with corn, coleslaw, cucumber salad, and potato salad. OMG! The meat was amazing - and the best part is that I have three more packs in the freezer. Bottom line: J&D can hook you up IF you know to ask for the cryovac packs of untrimmed short ribs. And if you do, leave some for me!

Martins Food Market - This day I only took 3 pics, but if Walmart, McDonalds, Sheetz can remodel and keep bathrooms clean - why can't Martins?

I've been shopping at Martin's for many years ,probably at least 30. I always liked the store until…read morea recent incident. There is a lady who is going in there with a small dog and putting it in a cart. This dog is not a service animal. It ooks like and acts like a regular pet. It is important for people who need service animals to have them everywhere but they do not sit in carts and they are well behaved. I was waiting by the lottery machine and the dog was out of the cart rnning up to me several times. I probably would not have said anything if it had not been annoying me. This lady turned and asked me if i was waiting to play the lottery. It was obvious I was and when she did I asked her if the dog was hers and why it was in the grocery store. She said she had special permission fromt he store manager and she had anxiety so she needed this little dog which was ridiculous. I looked up the law on this and only service animals are allowed in grocery stores, not emotional support animals. The worse thing about it is the fact that she puts the dog in the cart instead of having a leash and controlling it alongside the cart. I wrote a letter to the manager of the store and received no response so I am assuming this is alright with him even though this is a health and sanitation violation. Oh sure, the dog is cute and all that but it is in a cart that anyone could get afterwards. And to be blunt, that dog's rear end and paws are all over that cart , a cart that you or I may unknowingly put our produce and food stuffs on after this woman leaves the store. And talking to the assistant manager and secutrity guard were useless at the time, even though at that point this woman was calling me names and saying she was purposely going to stay at the lottery machine to keep me from using it.

It's a nice store, well stocked, and the staff has, for the most part, been pleasant. The Yelp…read morelisting says it's open 24 hours, but this is not the case. It opens at 7, which is very inconvenient for those of us who are early birds. It would rate a 5 if not for that.
