My rating/opinion hasn't changed since my 2016 review, but I wanted to mention that I've come to really appreciate the hiking trails at Eagle Rock Reservation. Also, Eagle Rock offers some amazing skyline views of NYC from Essex County.

I like Eagles and I like rock so I figured I'd love this place. I have no idea why they call it Eagle Rock Reservation, there are no eagles and the rocks are basic but it still has a few things to offer. There's parking, public bathrooms, a baseball field and trails. The biggest attraction is the overlook to NYC and the 9/11 memorial. It's a beautiful memorial and a great view. I was horrified when I looked down and saw all the trash over the ledge. Somebody should clean that up! There's a few different trail options in the woods. I took the loop that went around the property. There wasn't anything scenic about it. You can hear and see the road from the trail and a few properties as well. If you're familiar with the trails, I think you can avoid being close to the road. I saw 2 plastic bags on my hike so I picked them up and filled them up with trash along the way.

My first time here. I'm impressed by the beauty of this park! Came here on a clear day and what a perfect day to see the NY skyline! Will definitely come back soon.

Such a beautiful park!! We visited this past Sunday to fly our drone (despite the high winds) and the Manhattan skyline view was absolutely worth the trip. I highly recommend hikers to visits the hiking trails. Dog friendly and lots of open space for recreation. There is a very touching and respectful memorial tribute for the September 11 . Great location to bring friends and families visiting the area.

Beautiful views of NYC and hiking trails. Not too crowded even on weekends. Dog friendly. Lots of parking available. Bring comfy sneakers so you can explore some of the trails. The leaves are really pretty during October/November. Some of the trails are more polished, but some are more natural with rocks and logs to step over.

I've been here a handful of times and it always makes for a nice outing. There are various trail entrances that move about the reservation that lets you get lost in a little forest without feeling too isolated. Throughout there are plenty of the usual foresty things to see including small animals, plants and streams which all bring a sense of peace. The trails are relatively simple making them very inviting for those who may not be as mobile, children and is fun for dogs (please clean up after them) =) Part of the Reservation is the open area with built in grills for outdoor activity which can be combined with a light walk and hike and a family picnic. There is a fair amount of parking and has Fine dining at the High Lawn as well as the 9/11 Memorial nearby offering great views and history.

Nice hiking trails. Beautiful view and the 9/11 memorial on top. It can be somewhat crowded on top during the weekend.

Eagle Rock Reservation is 408 acres of wooded land mostly red oak.. Eagle Rock lies on the crest of the First Watchung Mountains which are predominately volcanic basalt formations. It's name Eagle Rock comes from the fact that in the early 19th century bald eagles nested in the rocky cliffs of the eastern ridge. Today a 9/11 Memorial lies on the top of the eastern ridge and is worth stopping to see the views of the New York City Skyline from the George Washington to the Verrazano Bridge especially at night. It is quite the romantic parking area. The park does however close from 10pm till dawn. The old casino now the Highlawn Pavilion restaurant also sits on the east ridge and has spectacular views. Eagle Rock Reservation offers a softball field, gazebo, picnic area with porta potties and water fountain, horseback riding, bike riding on paved roads and hiking trails. Animals must be leashed. There is a kiosk opposite the 9/11 Memorial that holds trail maps. There are 6 trails all color coated and they range from easy to moderate. The longest Trail is the Yellow Lenape Trail at 1.83 miles. The shortest trail is the White Trail at .94 miles and is considered moderate. Above all the reservation is a place of peace and sanctuary for both flora and fauna. There are multiple free parking parking lots throughout the reservation. The easiest entrance is off of Eagle Rock Ave, the Montclair entrance has sharp winding curves.

I was looking for an easy hike but something that would be a good hike for me. Eagle Rock Reservation is perfect for this. When you go and park you have a huge park area if you just want to lay out and relax with a view of NYC. The hikes are more inside the park - we took yellow trail (not sure if we were on it the whole time, because it was a bit confusing) it was a little less than 2 miles and an easy trail for beginners. No markings for what trail you are in once you are in the woods, so it is very easy to get lost - so just be prepared before you go!

Such a great little park! Easy trails and tons of parking. Beautiful 9/11 memorial too. Great to bring your dog for an easy hike. I've had tons of little picnics on fallen trees in the park. At nice this place has the best view of the city. Definitely worth a visit!

I was sitting on my couch and realized I didn't want to waste a sunny day. It wasn't exactly warm, but daylight is daylight. I made the 25 minute drive and took a look at the 9/11 memorials. I then drive back to a pull off spot, maybe a 1/4 mile away (I have no idea really, I'm terrible with distance) and parked. I headed into the woods with no sense of direction or goal. Basically, all the makings of a horror movie. Instead, I decided to do my best to follow the trail signs (I went with yellow). It went well for a while and then I did some back and forth walking for a bit. Fortunately for me, I use the All Trails app. Eagle Rock is listed in there and the app shows all the trails and will help guide you via GPS. Let's just say had I not been using it, I'd still be in there. I absolutely plan on going back once we get another nice day. There are several trails to walk, it's quiet and a great way to spend the day.

Amazing spot to get some steps in. We went for a hike a few weekends ago when the weather was still good at 60 degrees and sunny. We did the Lenape Trail which was perfect for my 7 and 10 year old. The area is very popular so we couldn't find parking near the trail's start so we parked at the memorial and walked the loop around back to the car. It was almost a 2 mile walk, very family friendly. Most people wore masks or kept their distance. Lots of great views and a fun place to be outdoors. Finish you hike at Eagle Rock with a stop at the 9/11 memorial, it's worth the stop. Also, porta potties are at the memorial I'd you need to use.

If you don't go early in the spring or late in the fall, you will be eaten alive by insects. Also it will be completely overgrown and inaccessible. If you do go in the early spring or late fall, it will still be inaccessible, because its a freaking swamp. Expect to sink into the mud frequently and deeply. It's technically open to the public for hiking and fishing, but I get the very strong feeling the state doesn't actually want you there. There are no parking areas that I can find, no easy access (the only way I have found to access the area is parking on a dead-end street and a long walk on a road parallel to the highway past a private hunting preserve), and there are no trails aside from one footpath surrounding the lake. (Presumably made by those fishermen I have never seen) The first time I went there myself, I attracted the attention of a state trooper, who assumed I must have broken down or been kidnapped or something, as he had never seen anyone in those woods. Also, though I said it's untouched, I meant that there are no trails or official alterations to the land. This doesn't seem to stop anyone from using it as a communal landfill, however. There are sofas, old tires, various tetanus-inducing metal things, etc. I have never seen anyone else there, but it abuts against a private hunting preserve. . .and although the state land is technically off limits to hunters, I heard turkey calls that were definitely NOT coming from the private land. I would be very afraid to return, and possibly become a target for poachers. On the plus side, if you can avoid being shot, it is very isolated, and very serene.

Happy New Year friends!…read more 2026 is my year (I say this every year) and I wanted to center my well-being today. So I joined my body affirming hiking group (ask about us!) for our Jan. 1 First Day Hike to Garret Mountain. Imagine our collective surprise when we woke up to a phantom overnight snowstorm! Still we persisted. Our group of 6 was suited and hiking booted for the wooded trails only to discover a thick layer of ice under and over the rocks headed into the forests. Even our microspikes wouldn't have been much help due to the steep declines. So we backtracked and decided to walk the auto loop instead. We got a mile into our 3 miles and Passaic County PD came around and announced the park was closing due to ice and dangerous conditions. So we walked back up to the auto lookout and headed out. 2 of 3 miles wasn't bad considering that I was cold in places I've never been cold before, and had just said to my friend, "I have a bad feeling about this hike today" right before we had to come out of the woods due to ice. Listen to your intuition! I know this park will be stunning in spring so I can't wait to return. The mountain views and gorgeous NYC skyline are not to be missed. Keep in mind: -The Tower was closed for maintenance so check before you go -Microspikes are a must in the winter - and even then... -It's a good 7-8 degrees colder up high in the park. 22 felt like 15. -the wildlife does not gaf. The dreary conditions were not the park's fault. Loantaka was the site of the annual first of the year hike with a group of noble chums. Interestingly, there was a rival "official" hike being held at the same time by the Boy Scouts of America - their social media announcements (complete with map) ahead of time were very helpful in locating a decent parking area for my compatriots. I don't think I have the ability on Yelp to review the BSA, but their scoutmaster was a gem and several of my chums purchased commemorative pins for the event at their little kiosk. Also, my dad was an Eagle Scout and can start a bonfire in about 30 seconds, so that's something. For the purposes of our adventure, we ended up walking 3.13 miles (assuming an Apple watch was correct, which I'm always dubious about), an out-and-back from the parking lot off Loantaka Way to Kitchell Lake just across the aptly named Kitchell Road. The parking lot was easy to access with plenty of spaces, though it was a bit more crowded by the time we were done. It was very pleasing to see several port-a-potties nearby, and I can report from firsthand experience that they were relatively clean, though the toilet seat in mine was wet and required my first squatting situation of 2022. I could breathe comfortably though, so I think you take that compromise if you can get it. The trails are very well maintained - we were exclusively on paved ones, though it looked like there were a few dirt paths that went off them as well, all of which looked tidy and drama-free. That said, it would have been nice if there were more markers/signage giving us a better idea of where we were. It would be difficult to get authentically lost in this area (I imagine it would take roughly 15 minutes to accidentally stumble across a county highway), but it would have been helpful for our orientation. This year's hike featured an Honorary Young Pup of 6, who was able to handle the adventure with aplomb (and enjoyed spotting the metal tags on the trees). There were also many pooches on the premises, and virtually all seemed to be doodle mixes of some sort - very little variety in this area of Jersey, apparently. If you're looking for decent photo ops, this is not where I'd go; this is a park that I'd use exclusively for very mild cardio/fresh air. There are a few streams on the journey, but nothing to write home about. The pond was pleasant enough, with abundant waterfowl in the distance, but it's hard to get whipped up about scenery that looks like it's straight out of Taylor Swift's Folklore album photo shoot.

It feels more like a city park than a quiet garden. I personally would not return, though I see why neighbors enjoy having green space nearby. When I visited, a large group had formed a circle that occupied an entire section of the small rose garden. There were no signs indicating the area was reserved, and their gathering unintentionally made the space feel closed off to other visitors. In shared public spaces like this, especially in smaller gardens, it is important for any group, whether local or new to the community, to be mindful of the park's norms and not treat the small public garden like it's only for them. Many people visiting or living here may not be aware of how these spaces are typically used, so a little consideration goes a long way in keeping the park welcoming for everyone.

Down the little dirt trail by the stream near Watchung Ave., see if I could make it down the ditch under the bridge, then back up near the duck pond to look at the birds. Over to the playground, down the tall metal slide (burning in the hot sun), on and under the wooden playground (splinters and the occasional scary bee), and riding the swings, both pony-themed and regular. Slow forward to 2025. Brookdale still has the same paved paths. The old dirt trail gradually became a bunch of bumps for dirt bikes instead of my regular bike. The duck pond was filled in years ago but is now a wetlands area. The playground has been modernized a couple of times and is now modern, safe plastic. Still pony-themed swings. The old gravel track is now modern plastic for running or similar sports - though there was something special about sliding my bike around the turns on that gravel track. You just can't ride on a running track. There's an annual softball tournament there we still play, and the fields really haven't changed, though I've heard it's been getting tougher to get things reserved properly. So it's still a wonderful park, but without the ducks and with the complications to holding in park events, the fifth star has gone away with my childhood. That's OK. It will always be 5 stars in my heart.
