This is a fun place for the kids to try out skiing for the first time…read more I brought my family to Terry Peak to learn how to ski. I grew up skiing, but my Florida babies hadn't seen snow until this vacation. There's a sweet little ski school that introduces kids to skiing. They get a two hour lesson with other kids, and by the end of it, most kids can safely ski down the bunny slope for the rest of the day. Sometimes they do take the kids on the chairlifts within those two hours, but on the day my kids took the class, they stuck to the magic carpet. Not a problem. Both kids enjoyed their lesson enough that they were up to trying the chairlift with me, and we hopped on, and the staff was kind enough to slow down the chairs to let us get on awkwardly and then to stop the lift when my son fell off when he dismounted. Everyone is super friendly. The instructors were really nice and great at communicating with the parents. The people running the rental area were very understanding when my daughter lost her ski in the powder. The resort is small enough that I was comfortable letting my kids go off with their ski school friends to ski the rest of the afternoon. The kids' green ski lesson package included a beginner's pass that allowed them access to the Stewart lift, so they could go down a couple green circle runs, which was enough for my daughter. The next day, I signed my son up for the Blue ski lesson package. On that day, it was just him and another kid who had also been in the beginner class the day before. The instructor took them to the top of the mountain, and by the end of the 2 hours, my son felt comfortable going down the easier blue squares. Both of my kids are now excited to plan more ski vacations. Terry Peak is probably too small for more experienced skiers to stay amused for long, but for a two day intro to skiing for my kids, it was perfect. We were there for spring break, and it happened to snow for the three days before we arrived, so the mountain was "busy." The lines to buy tickets and get fitted for rental gear were long and slow. But once you are all set up, the resort itself was fantastic. The lines for the chairlifts moved quickly, none of the 30=60 minute waits that I remember from skiing in Tahoe as a kid. The Stewart Lodge Cafe was a very fast place to grab a quick meal. They just serve pizza, hot dogs, burgers, chicken tenders, corn dogs, and chili. There's also a bar on one side that allows kids to sit at the tables but does not allow outside food. I heard that the other lodge has a better menu, but we never made it down there. There's a decent amount of free parking. We took a taxi from Deadwood (cost $35-40 each way) rather than try the icy and unfamiliar roads in a rental.

I encourage anyone considering snowmobile rental in the Black Hills SD area to avoid "Black Hills…read moresnowmobile rental" at all cost. Myself and 9 family members booked a trip in the summer of 2014 with "Jake" . Before departing for our trip in February 2015 we called "Jake " to make sure there would be enough snow and that the brand new sleds he promised would be ready. Jake assured us that there was a four foot snow base and the sleds were all ready to go. Upon arrival at the rental location we found several old, worn out and poorly maintained snowmobiles. There was also no snow base with the occasional inch or less of packed snow/ice between the rocks and dirt... We expressed our concerns to Jake about the trail conditions and were assured that the trails would get better " just over the hill" . We mentioned to Jake that maybe canceling the rental would be a good idea, but his response was " I have no money but I can give hugs all day".... At this we figured we might as well see what was " over the hill" as Jake was paid months ahead and was keeping the money. We went out to the lot to find the " brand new sleds " Jake had promised us. There where no new sleds, all had been patched together with zippy ties and duct tape. Most where 10 years old or more, 3 were only 5 years old. All had various degrees of damage. Many did not start and all had some sort of issue that took hours to patch together. Mine was the best of the lot with no working reverse, minimal if any braking, zippy tied front plastic, bent control arms and a slipping drive belt. Some of the others needed pull started and two of the ones we did leave the rental shop with broke down in less than 25 miles.. Jake had us park the sleds at a different location than where we rented them, then used our truck to shuttle the drivers of the sleds. The next day when we drove the approximate 30 miles to get the sleds , we were met by a disgruntled man instructing us to get all of these sleds off his property and referred to Jake as "a crook". The third sled to break down lost a control arm and its drive track in less than 90 miles which stranded that rider. Jake is presently trying to extort money from several renters for fraudulent reasons. Jake was very insistent that we all have insurance on the sleds and asked that we park them along side the road with the keys in them. Not sure if this is standard practice but I found it suspicious . At the very kindest I could say Jake, (aka Michael J Rohr), is a fraudulent "businessman" but personally feel he is nothing more than a common criminal. Avoid renting here at all cost.

The entire team at Paleo Adventures is outstanding. They spent extensive time with us before, during and after the digs so that we had the best possible experience. We uncovered countless fossils, culminating in my daughter finding a portion of a youth triceratops frill (neck shield) and myself a toe of a thescelosaurus. They have regular bikes, but we rented ebikes since well the Black Hills are actually hilly! They even offer a shuttle service instead of riding out and back. Very convenient. We chose to be dropped off and rode back. When we rented snowmobiles on a different trip here they worked great and trails were beautiful with the pines covered in fresh snow. Trails are marked at every intersection "you are here" that you really don't even need a paper map. Highly recommend.

An unexpectedly well curated collection in the heart of the US. I was not originally planning to…read morecome into this museum - only to visit the various placards declaring the geographic center of the US. I'm quite glad I decided to wander in. At the front, I was greeted by a friendly woman who seemed to be working here in retirement as a way to pass the time and stay social. She was very welcoming and answered all of my questions. From her I learned the most important point: this museum is free! The collection includes all manner of items representing ranching, horseback riding, and cowboy life. A small exhibit on local historical military members. Some fascinating items donated by local individuals and businesses including (but not limited to) western wear, an old x-ray shoe machine, and a very old bicycle that lit its way with a carbide lantern. I particularly loved the display board of various types of barbed wire and the names and years associated with them. They do rotating exhibits on different topics - surprising to me, honestly! The exhibit at the time of my visit was called "Turn on the Light!". They ran a film on Edison and had placards and explanations on the human development of light. A local elementary school field trip was visiting while I stopped by, so it's clear they serve a purpose in the community. There is a great little gift shop where I purchased a sticker proclaiming its origin at the geographic center of the US. While in truth this is not the exact location of the center of the US, they have a map for how to get there. It's not far away, but requires several miles of dirt road driving to get there. This museum was, again, totally free to visit. However, I was more than happy to make a donation before leaving and would recommend it to anyone visiting the area!

This museum is definitely a walk in history of the way things were back then. I found it to be very…read morefascinating and enjoyed looking at the old telephone, first sewing machine, horse equipment, how much things were back then. They even have dinosaur bones there. They even had military information for each service and what their uniform looked like back then. Also gave tribute to those who were in the Korean and Vietnam wars. Definitely something to take preteens or older teenagers to see how things were back then. That way they may have more appreciation for the things they have today. The ladies that ran this museum were very kind and friendly. They have a sign-in book when you first walk in the doors. On the left side and down some stairs is the actual seal/plate for the Geo Center of the US surrounded by flags. They even had an old carriage you can look in to see how they looked inside back in the day. They even have a very cute gift shop of many different things and toys for kids. If you're ever in the area or on your way to Devils Tower, this is a must stop place to see. On interstate 90 they have a sign for the exit. If we didn't see the sign for it we would have never known it was there.

AWARENESS: Chris' Campground was our RV destination stop…read morewhile visiting South Dakota from June 27 through July 6, 2022. NARRATIVE: This years annual RV trip with four other RV friends and family began and ended here at Chris' Camp from June until July of 2022. Located right off the I90 freeway in the town of Spearfish, Chris' Camp turned out to be a great place to stay since its centrally located to everything you may want to see and do in the South Dakota area. The campground is well maintained and has lots of amenities such as; two heated swimming pools, a petting zoo and many grassy shaded areas for kids to play. The staff were friendly and extremely helpful, especially when looking for great place to eat in the area. They were also helpful in pointing out places to have repairs done to one of my fiends truck. SCENE: Located right off the I90 freeway in the town of Spearfish, Chris' Camp turned out to be a great place to stay since its located less than than 15 minutes from Deadwood. 20 minutes from Sturgis. And, an hour from Rapid City and Custer. Three of our rigs lucked out and got pull through spots and one had a back in but, the staff made sure we were all together. The only downside to Chris' Camp would be the roads. Made up from dirt and rock, the frequent rains made traction going uphill in some spots dificult. RECOMMENDATION(S): The friendliness of the staff alone would made me recommend Chris' Camp to everyone.
