This is THE place to get a hand made and made to order kilt or suit. During my visit, I watched as the owner fitted a groom for his wedding kilt. Kilts are traditionally made for men, but they will create a hostess skirt or shorter skirt for women also. Should you not be affiliated with a Highland clan, fear not. There are tartan patterns for everyone, in beautiful colors; they even have an X-Box tartan. This is ground zero for tartan wear and Harris tweed. Look no further.

Terrible customer service. On a trip to Scotland, I stopped in based on a reference and I wanted to…read moremake sure my kilt was measured correctly. I ordered and paid up front for the whole thing which included flashes. I didn't buy the cheap-end kilt either... it was the top end fabric. I was told it would take 4-6 weeks. 8 weeks later, I call... "it should be in this week and we'll get it to you overnight" (well, 2 days for international but I get the idea). 3 1/2 weeks later it comes in the mail. I honestly believe they completely forgot about it. Anyway, I put it on... doesn't fit. The inside belt doesn't even reach the buckle. Also, no flashes. I send an email... no response. I eventually call; no explanation for not getting the email. We reached an agreement that I'll get it altered locally and send them the receipt and they'll reimburse me. Also, they'll get the flashes sent out. I go to the alteration shop and they measured me again just to make sure... yup, no change in my waistline so Nicolson's obviously messed up the measurement of the belt. So, they put on a new belt in the appropriate spot. I email Nicolson's the scanned image of the receipt. 2 weeks later, I email them again... still no response. I call them: "your emails must have been accidentally deleted" (really? who in your company would delete 2 emails specifically saying "here's the receipts you requested"?). They ask for them again. I send them. No response. 3 weeks later I call: "1,000 apologies... the email must have been deleted by mistake". They reverse the fee on my card over the phone. Oh, and still no sign of the flashes. Weeks later I call regarding the flashes. Same excuses. This goes on and on. 2 of the calls' responses were "oh, they are going to arrive tomorrow, and I'll send them out for overnight delivery". One was "I'll take care of that this afternoon". Nothing for a month after each phone call. After another series of phone calls and almost 11 months later, I finally get my flashes. I would have been better of buying it locally even though it would have cost a little more because I would have had everything in 3 weeks instead of 11 months. In short, they ignore my emails and I cannot trust anyone who repeatedly says "it will be in this week" or "I'll take care of it right away" and then no response. I had to contact them everytime... they never reached out to me at any time. Obviously, they just don't care. There is no other explanation for the complete lack of effort on their part to resolve this disaster of an order.

Many of the shops I visited were staffed by people who knew surprisingly little about how kilts should fit, fabric quality, etc. In some shops, it was assumed that I was not a serious buyer. After an especially negative experience with an unhelpful saleswoman in Stirling, I finally found the kilt I wanted to buy just down the road at Clan Kilts Ltd. As it happened, it was an ex-hire heavyweight kilt being offered at an excellent price, so I felt I had really scored.... but it got even better! I had already committed to buying the kilt, but the gentleman in the shop volunteered to replace the somewhat worn leather straps at no additional charge. He measured to make sure the new straps would be ideally placed. He even offered to have the kilt pressed. Because I already felt that I was getting such a great deal, I had not requested any of these services; they were all offered unexpectedly. I had the kilt shipped home to the USA. The charges were extremely reasonable. The kilt was delivered very quickly, with new straps, etc, just as promised. I have never had better retail service anywhere in the world. If Clan Kilts provides such excellent service to a tourist whom they're unlikely to see again, and who is buying a discounted item, I can only assume that they must bend over backward for their local repeat clientele.

Indeed, I wasn't particularly drawn to look at it, apart from the large figure of a highland dressed soldier situated at the side of the shop! From the outside, the shop looks quite small and insignificant, however Scotia Kilts provides a very good service indeed. Not only does it provide kilts/highland dress for hire and sale, this shop also buys in your old kilts, jackets and highland clothing! Indeed, you can hand in your old clothing and get a discount on the price of buying some new highland wear! The kilts and all the majority of the clothing are made in Scotland, so if you prefer to buy goods made in the locality/Scotland, then this shop is for you! When this item arrived, I noticed…read morethat the clan crest on the belt buckle, which was part of the set, was not properly attached and was, in fact, not straight or symmetrical. I contacted the vendor multiple times to point out this flaw and ask them to correct it. Each time, they responded by telling me that the crest was supposed to be asymmetrical and refusing to do anything about it. I eventually disassembled the buckle, refabricated one of the pieces and corrected the problem. My advice would be to avoid this company. There are any number of vendors who supply this type of merchandise.
