Linghams Heswall is the original of the two Wirral based independent bookshops, and indeed the…read morebest! There is a great intellectual atmosphere within this bookshop, one unrivalled by larger chain stores such as Borders and Waterstones. It's as though all the staff have been vetted for their intelligence and knowledge before being allowed on the shop floor, rather than just handed a job because they're prepared to work for minimum wage. Linghams has been in Heswall over 20 years and continues to thrive as the local community support the store! They have a great little cafe serving homemade delicacies towards the back of the store, and they can order any book with an ISBN number. The only problem is, you'll probably find any book that they sell much cheaper on the internet. I guess that's why even the bigger bookshops are in decline. Long live Linghams! They have all the sections you'd expect to see in a huge book store!

I love this little book shop company. I've been in the one in West Kirby as well. The staff seem…read morevery attentive and friendly. It reminds me of the movie You've Got Mail. This particular Linghams has a very nice café in the back. I was really impressed by the layout and style of the café. It looks very homey, yet posh with dark wood round tables and a long bar, behind which are arranged all sorts of yummy looking teas, coffees, and even some potted jams for sale if I remember correctly. There is a great children's area which includes some small toys and plushies for sale as well as books, and I really like the local books section, as well as the poetry section as you will find some local authors in both including poetry chapbooks. Great shop.

A not-for-profit organisation run by a workers co-operative, it's a welcoming environment with friendly staff committed to social change. As you'd expect from their window displays, the emphasis is firmly on books that inspire and empower people to make positive change to the world. There's a decent section of fiction along one wall of the shop but really, News From Nowhere is the place to go if you're looking for books on politics, activism, the environment, human rights, animal rights, peace, global equality, feminism, sexuality, gay, lesbian and queer culture, spirituality, Jewish diaspora, health and well being or world fiction. They also stock roots and world music CDs and have a notice-board advertising community events, meetings and demonstrations. In a world that's becoming more corporate and generic by the minute, News From Nowhere offers genuine and life-affirming food for thought.

The staff really helpful and knowledgeable about what they stock - which makes a change, as so many of the big chain bookshops don't have a clue. I recommend checking out the website as you can also order from there, but then you miss out on the dusty smell of the shop. It appeals a lot more to the average consumer now with a wider range of popular goods. There's all sorts of little pieces such as some funky postcards.
