My husband and I had been rewatching old episodes of Parts Unknown and No Reservations. When we knew we would have some time in Istanbul, we made a point to look up some of the restaurants visited by Anthony Bourdain. Dürümzade was one such place and they have been a mainstay for over 20 years. Dürüm is a street food wrap filled with döner kebab. We finished up our group tour and decided to take a bus to where the restaurant was located. For a 3-stop bus ticket it was 145 TL or less than $4 USD per person. The bus dropped us off where we needed to be and we walked over. There were a lot of little cafes in this area. We found an empty table and sat down. We ordered the beef shish plate for 2 that was served with a tomato salad and flatbread. We also ordered one can of iced tea. It was so good that after we scarfed down our meal, we ordered a dürüm to go. The meat was so flavorful and delicious. This is what we expected in terms of food when we decided to visit Türkiye. I was able to pay with my card. They have no WC here and pointed us down the street. Service was great and the staff was kind, although their English was limited.

Split an adana durum with my friend, wish I didn't. The only durum place recommended by the late Anthony Bourdain, solid.

Delicious and super cheap but they don't take foreign cards. So cash only if you are not local. It's really hot inside, limited sitting outside but you can always take everything to go as well. Basically, meat only but they do have a salad for vegetarians. Doesn't take too long to get your food, which is a huge plus when you are on the go exploring the city. Overall, a must if you are in Istanbul!

This is a must visit spot in Istanbul. All the food is incredible. You know you're in good hands when you see Anthony Bourdain loved a place.

This place was on CNN. The food is excellent and must visit when in Istanbul. Authentic as it gets. Coded over coal just like 100year past. Taste is amazing.

Amazing flavors! No wonder Anthony Bourdain raved over this food. Very good service and enjoyed the outdoor seating. It is a small place so I recommend going on off peak times for best experience.

Happy kid, first meal in Turkey

First meal in Istanbul, and Turkey for that matter. And it couldn't have started much better. Place was packed with people ordering to go and most of the tables were taken. They ended up seating us across the street which was just fine by us. A fitting meal on Bourdain day as this was a place he dines at in one of his shows. The durum was fantastic, so much so that it was the one meal my son kept comparing everything else we ate to. Everything we ate throughout our trip was filling......Is it better than the first place? The service was quick and efficient, decor is my ultimate favorite......small stools and wobbly tables on side walks(not kidding). Tried to go back but Eid Al-Adha closed them for the duration of our stay. So good, will be back if I'm in Istanbul again.

Got the 25TRL Spicy Beef/Lamb Platter. Not too spicy (as recommended by the outgoing GM/Owner?), very flavorful. First thought was that the kebabs were on the skinny side, but it was actually the perfect portion/ meat-bread ratio. + Ayran yogurt drink and a Water I like that the durum? Was cut into small pieces. Fresh veggies, the side salad that came with it (red cabbage, tomato, cuk was fresh but 'generously' doused in a vinegar dressing. The place is a super casual, to-go place with 4 small tables inside & 5-6 tables out on the side street. Orders are flying in & out quickly, with a grill cook & 3 guys packing- took a little time to get my dinner FYI. 1 Star off for the machismo-istic VIBE. Customer service was very friendly & attentive but it was OBVIOUS (no interpreter needed) that all the workers where talking about the petite Asian female there. Every time I looked up, I met the eyes of the cook/GM/runner staring at different times. (Men in Turkey seem to stare anyway, but...) A lot of chatter among the staff- not very peaceful. There was another foreign couple there- they'd stare at the young woman also. But everyone else inside were male, the diners sitting outside were a mix of tourists & locals (love that restaurants spill out onto the streets). But it got annoying after a while. If you're female, I'd choose a table outside, far from & with your back to the restaurant...but then your order may take longer, as they don't see you. Or just get it to go..place it & come back in 5 minutes. Interesting how a middle-aged woman came up with a huge bowl of salad prepped. Don't think they would haggle her though.. No Reservations brought me to this restaurant! Not too far from İstiklal Street, nice little section of cafes & shops. Good mix of local + tourist.

Chicken Wrap

Delicious & Fresh food here! Worth the walk. If you speak English, they will be able to service you with no problem.

The wraps were really good, and cheap too! The kebab was really flavorful, and just off-the-grill. The servers/waiters were also very nice, asking if I wanted both the wraps to be cut in half. I was curious about why this little restaurant had so many reviews, just to realize that i had been visited by Anthony Bourdain.

Balıkçı Emin Usta - The fish sandwich in a wrap - fantastic!

When you're walking around the water in Istanbul, you will be inundated with fish sandwich stalls…read more But which one to go to? It can seem so difficult to choose. Our suggestion? Navigate over the bridge (past the fish stands on the boats), past the fish market where the path then begins to lead to a series of restaurants and small stands, the latter of which were all selling what appeared to be identical fish sandwiches. We walked the entire length, carefully scrutinising each vendor before recognizing the correct stand. While every fish sandwich purveyor may seem to be serving what looks like identical products, Emin Usta's stand was the only one with a line. Along with this line comes Emin, a hulking beast of a man whose singular mission in life appears to be making the most amazing fish sandwich in all of Istanbul. Whereas we observed other vendors haphazardly throwing together a sandwich in under 15 seconds, Emin's attention to detail and pursuit of perfection carries his sandwich to heights others can only hope to attain. In his massive palms a pair of ordinary kitchen tongs transforms into culinary tweezers, which he wields with the precision of a surgeon, ever so delicately plucking each and every minute bone from the thin fillets. This attention to detail is the foundation upon which a remarkable sandwich is built. However, as you might expect, perfection like this comes at a price: if you are in a hurry, this is not the fish sandwich for you. Whether there are 3 or 30 people in his line, Emin remains at an even keel, completely unswayed as he churns out a sandwich or two every 5 minutes. He may also stop for a cigarette in between. While we were patiently waiting our turn to place our order, the gentleman in front noticed us as tourists and explained that he works nearby and that Emin Usta's fish sandwiches are legendary, as they are well-known to be the best among a sea of imitators. He did also give us a one recommendation for ordering: go with a wrap instead of on a roll, which we readily obliged. The end result? This was an incredibly delicious wrap. The fillet of fish was fresh and perfectly grilled, still flaky and moist without the slightest hint of being overcooked. The veggies added crunch and texture while the quick squeeze of lemon brightened everything up. Then, a drizzle of pomegranate syrup, secret sauce and a sprinkle from an unlabeled jar of Turkish spices brought all the flavors together - salty, spicy, sour and sweet. Plus, a bit of time on the grill after everything was put together meant the wrap had a bit of crispiness as well as a bit of smokiness. (TRY 9 = $3.50) When we had been on the other side of Galata Bridge, there were a couple of floating boats churning out fish sandwiches that were incredibly full of tourists (and maybe locals). After having Emin Usta's fish sandwich, we both agreed there was no way they would have been as good. He doesn't work the grill all the time (he has an assistant that works sometimes), so just look for the wet wipes with his face at the stand! If we lived in Istanbul, we would definitely come here regularly.

All of the places have been vetted by our guides as they share a personal connection with the very friendly vendors. Sehzade Cag Kebap was hands down, the best lamb kabobs I've ever had. The staff here are rock stars, smiling, engaging with patrons and welcoming everyone to stick your head into the kitchen and view the succulent wheel of lamb meat. Your sense heighten as you sit and get ready to eat one of the best lamb dishes I've ever had. This feeling was shared with several members of our tour. Language could of been an issue here, but the smiling and friendly staff watched intensely as we inhaled their delicious entree. Their condiments were onions, red pepper paste, pomegranate molasses, tomatoes and plenty of homemade bread. They allow the star, "savory lamb meat" to be featured and not be buried by the accutramonts. It is a truely stunning dish and voted #9 in the world for best kabob. It was our most memorable experience given the food was just so authentic and good. We were pleasantly surprised because I had found Pera Antakya in my research when planning our trip and it was first on our list to try, we then discovered when we arrived at our hotel (The Westist) on our first night that Pera Antakya was right next door. We were shocked/surprised/thrilled all at the same time. As such, we had dinner here the first night we arrived in Istanbul and was blown away. We did the meze, the wrap, farmer's cheese, and the mixed grill plate all based on recommendations from who we believe was the owner. The hospitality was lovely, welcoming, but more so the food was incredibly memorable and we found ourselves wishing we had more time in Istanbul so we could come back and eat at Pera Antakya. We did a couple other highly rated restaurants in similar concept to Pera Antakya over the week we stayed in Istanbul and ultimately though food in Istanbul is generally good, we found Pera was still the best we had out of all them in the same category. In fact, if it was only one restaurant we could go back to and have another meal at or if I could only recommend one restaurant to eat at while you're in Istanbul--- it would be Pera Antakya. We were that impressed with this place. Do not miss it if you're in Istanbul!
