Interior Designer: Laura Koshel Details: COVID lockdowns reminded us what we love about our Chapel Hill home, and highlighted what we didn't. Topping the list: Our master bedroom; a sad and soulless room with a bed - equal parts beige and obsolete. Laura guided us, nay glided us through a collaborative design experience resulting in our dream bedroom. From the bespoke oak bed system with hand-tufted headboard to the full-wall remote motorized window treatments, she delivered us the perfect slumber chamber. The stunning lighting, soothing fabrics, and sexy sightlines make this our favorite room in the house. Decidedly luxe with a touch of swank, our new sanctuary all but beckons us to relax. My husband and I moved to Cary from south Florida last year. We rented a house, intending to stay…read morethere while we scoped out the area - but then this fantastic townhouse came on the market and we had to buy it. Next question: What to put in it? It's much bigger than our rental house - and much nicer. That said, we didn't want to spend crazy money on new furniture (we've made that mistake before) - but on the other hand, we wanted nice stuff (i.e., not Rooms to Go). We recognize our limitations, so I searched for someone who could help us with our new home - and luckily enough found Amy. She first went to our rental house (where we were still living) to see what we already had, get an idea of our colors, artwork, etc., then went to our new (empty) home. We were, frankly, amazed at some of her suggestions - amazed just because they *never* would have occurred to us. As soon as she saw our (very large) master BR suite, she noted that there was ample space to fit our existing living room furniture. She also suggested that we have the mantle in the living room (which was crazy high) lowered. ??!! We did not know such a thing was even possible. Amy had great recommendations for - and accompanied us on - furniture shopping trips (can't say enough about Cooper's - must get to their review next). She was also great for the little stuff - positioning furniture, helping organize the kitchen, etc. We could not have had a better experience and would not hesitate to seek her advice again.

When I reached out to Amy and told her what I needed, she made it happen! Finding pieces in one room that would be better in another; creating flow where corners or awkwardness had previously interrupted it; and most importantly, making this brand new space feel like our home. Working with Amy is quite a treat! She's professional, detail oriented, and has resources for whatever a home and family might need! Having an understanding of different perspectives in decor is a HUGE plus, too, as a simple mention of feng shui (which I know nearly nothing about) opened up a whole new conversation about placement of plants and honorary placement of our dearly departed pets! She has amazing energy, practical sensibilities, and a keen understanding of family functioning so she can help turn a house into a home. BIG SIGH! I adore my home now!

We met with Lisa to discuss ideas on remodeling our 1990s-era bathrooms because we were unsure of how to proceed. Lisa was able to present us a new vision, rescaling our plans and saving us a significant amount of money while still achieving our goal of creating an elegant, updated look and enhancing the function of the spaces. The savings on our bathroom remodels will allow us to embark on other redecorating projects that we thought were beyond our reach. We are thrilled! Lisa has amazing insights into melding function with beauty, and she has an appreciation of and respect for collectibles and antiques, and how best to display them to tell our family story. She has extensive resources to help us realize our vision. We are looking forward to continuing to work with Lisa to enhance our entire home, thereby enriching our family life. We are so pleased to have her as our guide in this journey! Kristine W.

Custom Colors & Cabinets - Angled view of our small kitchen

    Custom Colors & Cabinets

Where to even begin? OK, let's start from the very beginning. After checking out several outlets…read morethat provide ceramic tile backsplash services for new kitchens, we stumbled upon this small business in Angier, NC called Custom Colors and Cabinets. I liked their website and thought we'd have them come out and give us some ideas as to what a completely tiled backsplash would do for our new kitchen. A young lady by the name of Trisha Marsh answered when I called, and she began asking questions about what we were looking for. We didn't know at that point what we wanted, so Trisha started sending us emails with photos of different designs. I told her that my wife needed to see samples in person, so Trisha set an appointment to come to our home, and she brought along quite a few samples. We fell in love with several samples and decided on what we'd like to do. Now, what is hilarious is that when Trisha - a very tiny woman - showed up, she was driving a massive Dodge pick-up truck. At first, I assumed that the truck may have belonged to her husband - but surprisingly, it was hers, and she was proud of it. And let me tell you, her big smile and larger-than-life personality matched the size of her truck! Trisha spent a good hour measuring everything in our kitchen, and we gave her feedback on where we'd like the backsplash to go. She has a very warm, bubbly personality, and we were surprised to find out that she is the main person doing the installation. She demonstrates a great deal of attention to detail, measuring everything, feeling the wall for imperfections that she would have to fix first before doing anything else. She then informed us that it would take a few weeks to order the tile pieces since they were made of marble and glass - all made in Italy. And sure as forecasted, two weeks later, she got the tiles in. Custom Colors and Cabinets require 50% up front and the other 50% upon completion of work, and we did not find that unreasonable since many businesses do this. When Trisha finally began the project, little did we realize it would take 5 to 5.5 days - but it was also during one of the hottest weeks of the year. Her meticulous attention to detail, the cutting of the tiles with a special saw, her angled designs and precise placements made everything a joy to watch. She doesn't rush the process, nor should she. She's a true artist. We also found out that she installs new kitchens - and get this, she builds, paints, and installs the cabinets. We saw photos of kitchens that she designed and installed, and they looked like showrooms. Now let's be real here - if you want something installed in a quick, one-and-done manner, then forget about calling her. She's an artist - a pro - and she cannot (make that "will not") provide shoddy workmanship in order to rush through a project. Trisha's installation of our custom backsplash, is beyond admirable. The design and lay-out is first-rate and it finishes the kitchen to the point that the entire environment now has a very warm and comfy feel. Both my wife and I are quite happy with her work. Now, let me be up front. Sure, you can find outlets such as Home Depot, Lowes, and others that provide subcontracting work to do things like tiled backsplashes for kitchens, bathrooms, and other areas of the home - for possibly a cheaper rate. But you gamble on what you are going to get. Will you get somebody who rushes through the work and leaves many small details out? Do you get to pick the subcontractor they use (they often have a half dozen or more different subcontractors)? We elected to go with Custom Colors and Cabinets after meeting Trisha and are glad we did. You "may" pay a little more, but the end result will be quite worth it. We heartily recommend Custom Colors and Cabinets.

If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I wouldn't have believed that this was my kitchen. I went to…read morethe website, clicked on "recent projects" and, there it was. I didn't even recognize it at first. Trisha comes into your home with a vision - not just looking to make money. She envisions her home, the way she would like things in her own home, puts herself in your position, finds out what your likes & dislikes are. I've never had ANYONE work so hard to make me happy with my choices and to help me make my choices. The layout after layout she came up with - the changes, the measurements and re-measuring - and, more changes. She was AMAZING and was not happy until I was happy!! SO - she made the vanity for my guest bath and is now creating my entertainment center for my den area. You cannot go out and buy a solid wood, high quality piece of furniture in any furniture store for the price I received from her. You will be so glad you called them!!
