A nice hidden jewel! I had a taste for middle eastern food and came across this place. A grocery…read morestore with a food counter and a simple menu. I ordered a spicy jumbo chicken Shawarma with a mint yogurt drink. The shawarma was amazing and the mint yogurt brought back memories. The service was great and I wish I would've gotten more stuff. One can always google items but it might be kinda cool to have sections of the store shelves translate items to English - only for the ease of browsing quickly to try new things. The layout of the store was ok with baklava and fresh eats off to the same side & meats, cheeses and olives in the back. I specifically wanted to try the Dubai chocolate and I am craving to eat more! It's something I am going to seek out again soon when I get a chance. It was stored in the order fresh food display case. I got there about 1pm on a Saturday and three were left and I took one bar. While I was there someone grabbed the last two so they go quickly! The ratio of filling to chocolate is perfect. I also tried some baklava and Basbousa and I've decided it's not my go to but prefer it warmed up in the air fryer when I'm eating it. The fresh bakery items when you first walk in were tempting so I tried the meat and cheese filled triangle bread (not sure exact name) and they were tasty. The olive assortment was amazing in the back. I ended up with the mixed spicy olives and we both enjoyed snacking on them over the weekend. I ordered mix grilled platter to go (Shish kebab, Shish Tawook, with special rice, babaganouj, pickles, onions, garlic, or tahini sauce) I really liked the chicken and found the beef pretty bland. I would try the chicken wrap next time. The fresh pita to take home will be on my list next time.

Fun place for apple-picking and buying delicious apple products (recommend the sparkling apple…read morecider and apple donuts). The orchard is huge, with plenty of room to roam and apple tree varieties to choose from, mostly honey crisp, but also crimson crisp, Jonagold, fuji, and gala. Admission is $5 per person and we paid $22 for a two-person you-pick peck. Which was more than enough for us! Cons: Parking was an issue (it was a weekend) with unclear traffic flow through the lot...and it became progressively more busy later in the day.

This was a most lovely orchard experience from start to finish. Make your way to the register, and you can purchase donuts and turnovers as well as your u-pick bags. I made my apple turnover ala mode, which was worthwhile, and savored it outside overlooking the orchard. So picturesque! After my apple treat, I was ready to pick and made my way to the orchard. Expect some hill climbing and pretty scenery between the apple trees and flower fields. I imagine the trek could be more challenging for families with young ones. Wilson's boasts 100 varieties of apples, one of the reasons I visited the orchard in the first place. At the end of September, I filled my bags with two varieties I had never heard of, which was fun. The rows were well-marked with the apples that were ready for picking as well as the name of the variety. More importantly, the apples were delicious. Overall, I'm very happy I spent a morning here, and I imagine just about anyone else will feel similarly.

My grandparents go mostly because they enjoy the small animal, produce, etc. auction on Wednesdays. When I've gone in the early summer, there are scores of baby goats, baby chicks, and other baby farm animals to see and purchase. Also plenty of full sized poultry and rabbits ready to be butchered. Inexpensive, farm raised eggs and seasonal produce are there throughout the year. The smaller auction also features things you might find at a yard sale, estate sale, or thrift shop. Everything is numbered and the auction starts at around 10:30. Simultaneously, a livestock auction takes place in a different area of the sale barn. Various animals are auctioned throughout the week. I was there on a Wednesday, which is sheep and goat day. There are days set aside for specialty auctions, which feature draft horses, farm machinery, and carriages. The sale barn also has a small cafe, where my grandparents often end their trip to Kalona with a slice of homemade pie. It is run by local Amish women and is pretty good. Of course, Kalona, Iowa is also home to one of the larger Amish settlements in America. At the sale barn, Amish families place bids right alongside the old farmers. There's a field set aside for carriage parking. It's a great opportunity to interact with people whose way of life is completely foreign to the average American. I love the sale barn because it's such an amazing way to observe a regional culture that is rapidly disappearing. Corporate farms and urban sprawl are taking a toll on small farms across the country, but a morning at the sale barn provides insight about what life might have been like in the Midwest before these new ideals took root. Honestly, this place is so cool. If the opportunity ever presents itself, you should go.
