Catacombs is the hub of fitness, well-being, and fun in Durango. The Catacombs community is one of…read morethe most remarkable collection of people, both the staff and the members who enjoy the place, that I have every experienced. From the top, Tracie Holcomb guides a team of coaches, nutritionists, and physical therapists that are dedicated, patient, inclusive, and encouraging. And the members to a person are collaborative, encouraging, enthusiastic, and willing to work...together. This community is more than just a bunch of people sweating together and grinding through an hour of burpees...it is a team of people working together, both for themselves and for each other - a trait rarely found in a gym, let alone across an entire community of athletes. From those just starting out, to former olympic athletes - we are all one at Catacombs, and it is such an amazing place where we can all grow, progress, get stronger and better, and thrive. Together.

Quick look rating: 4/5 Quality, 4/5 Service…read more Located at the base of the Purgatory Ski Resort is a cute little exercise gym. The ski resort is about 15 miles north of Durango, Colorado. The gym does not have trainer on duty. The maintenance crew keeps this place spotless and not smelling like an unkept gym. Out in front, they have a small fresh towel rack which they keep stocked regularly of towels. The front also leads to the restrooms, lockers and showers. They have most of the walls covered with full length mirrors for you to watch your form when lifting weights. One of the biggest plusses is the high altitude. For me there is nothing better than getting in great work outs at a high altitude before going back to a lower altitude. I always come back to a lower altitude with so much more energy, it must be the oxygen ratio. I used to watch endurance athletes from videos on there sports adventures and they used to add the element of altitude training. Inside the gym they have a number of different cardio machines, just great for jumping 10 minutes on each one for your cardio day! They also have free standing weights, please put them back as you found them. This is a big gripe among folks that weight lift all the time, thank you! There are plenty of other work out equipment as well, and they are always upgrading what they have on hand. If you are a "work out freak" and need special equipment, call way ahead and i'm sure they will try to help meet your needs! Right outside the gym is the pool and hot tube to help ease those worked out muscles. I do believe that they ask for you to shower down prior to your visit to the pool and hot tub. The Durango Mountain Club is a nice little workout facility.

We stayed at a condo at the Tamarron Lodge, near the Glacier Club. We were very excited to find out…read morethere was a restaurant right there that we could walk to. The Mineshaft Restaurant in the Glacier Club had a nice menu selection. We walked over earlier in the day and spoke with a very nice young lady, who told us we could come by and eat, in the restaurant, or take food to go, and it would probably be about a 20 minute wait, for to go. Later, I called about a reservation and was told reservations were for members only. So, I placed an order to pick up. When she said it would be "at least 20 minutes if not longer" I assumed they were busy. No problem. She was not as friendly as the young girl we had spoken to earlier. We went to pick up the food after 20 minutes had passed. The restaurant was nearly empty and the person I had spoken to on the phone asked if we would like to be seated. I told her I was picking up my order, which was sitting on the hostess station. She took my card and handed the receipt and card back saying, "no need to sign." Well...I saw why there was no need to sign; she had added a 20% tip. Really? She could have asked how much I wanted to tip and we picked up. Who knows. Maybe I would have said 20%, but she could have asked. And...I would have regretted it, because we walked back to our condo took out our food and there was no salad dressing, so I had to call and walk back to get the dressing. No apology. The Goat Cheese "spread" appetizer was disappointing. Spread says to me you can easily spread the goat cheese. It was a log of hard goat cheese. The Thai Beef Salad had a small piece of beef with it and it had way too much black pepper on it. I assume they treat their "members" with better service.
