Chua Duoc Su is always busy and especially busy around New Years!! I take my mom here for Tet/Vietnamese New Years and also when we are praying for someone's health because Duoc Su Buddha is the medicine Buddha. This place is almost always busy, so even though they have a private lot, I actually recommend parking in the residential area nearby. It will save you a lot of hassle. Trust me! In addition to praying here, Chua Duoc Su stands out to me among the many many Vietnamese Buddhist Temples in Orange County because of the Vegetarian food they sell in the back. The food is so incredibly cheap at about $2-3 here for portion and it is SO DELICIOUS. The food is so flavorful and savory with all sorts of textures, you won't even know that you are eating vegetarian food. Every time we are here, my mom and I buy all of our favorites and the total will be abut $20-30 for a week's worth of food. If you want the vegetarian food, come on Sundays or mong mot (the 1st/New Moon) and ram (the 15th/Full moon) of the Lunar calendar. The 1st and the 15th correlate with the days that practicing Vietnamese Buddhist observe as days to be vegetarian so they have vegetarian food on those days. Nam Mo A Di Da Phat

My grandma and grandpa BEFORE he passed away. Seriously though I miss him.

The last time the review was in 2015! This is a brand new review I wrote. Nam Mo A Di Da Phat (trans. I pray for Amita Buddha) is a phrase that you will hear in many Buddhist temple prayers and epically this one. This place is close to our house, each Sunday we would go to the ancestors and pray epically my grandfather and all of our deceased relatives. The temple is helpful and respectful with the monks and nuns running the place. If you are vegetarian, this place sells the best vegetarian food here! I highly recommend it for EVERYONE here. I haven't indicated the location where my grandfather was placed in the prayers hall but hopefully you enjoy this review and this concludes our tour. Thanks for reading and viewing my reviews hope to see you soon at the next location as we continue our adventures of Yelping.

I come here on Sundays for the delicious and cheap vegetarian food. Not only are the monks very generous with their portions, everything goes back into the temple. When you drive up it's a bit intimidating because all you see is the temple, but if you make your way to the back there is a converted garage that has the goodies. Most things Vietnamese that you can think of, they have a version of it that is purely vegetarian. My favorites are the imitation fish and imitation crunchy pork, as well as the hu tieu and mi xao. As someone else said, you can easily feed a family of 5 for $25 bucks with leftovers.

Though I rarely visit Chua Duoc Su because I reside in the SGV, I truly love the vegetarian food that is made at this Buddhist temple! Each time my mom comes back from Garden Grove after visiting the temple, we have a fridge stocked with awesome vegetarian food that sends me to heaven! Vietnamese favorites like mam chung (fermented fish, pork and egg quiche), bun rieu (crab + tomato noodle soup), ca ri ga (Chicken Curry) and even KHO BO (Beef Jerky) are made here without ANY meat or fish products! Without any garlic, leeks or onions either! I'm off to grab some white rice and enjoy my vegetarian mam chung. ZOMG!!!!

Me learning Vietnamese as a child.

The space was also much bigger and they had the best vegetarian meal. We got 2 banquet tables reserved and were served heaps of delicious food that were as good if not better than traditional restaurants. I'm addicted to their egg rolls. We were also served bánh hỏi thịt quay chay, bánh bao vịt quay chay, rice vermicelli with hot pot chay, mì xào giòn chay, and a couple more dishes. They were all incredible. I'm still thinking about the food and wondering if it's sacrilege to reserve for regular party. If you come here for Buddhist related things, don't miss out on their food!

When you walk up the main steps, you will take off your shoes and place them amongst the many other pairs of shoes in the shoe area. On the special days and on their regular temple days, they have vegetarian dishes for purchase at the booth. I have gotten sick once from having some dish from here, but it didnt stop me returning more than once. Oh, and you cannot miss this temple - it's painted a really bright yellow on the outside. Street parking only, so be prepared to park a few short blocks away.

This temple is quaint and cozy, but the headmaster Thay Nhu Hai has a big heart. He is compassionate and caring with all who encounters him. My mom and I first met Thay Nhu Hai when he did the prayer at a family friend's funeral and also the weekly prayers and other traditional death-praying after: once a week for 7 weeks, 49 days, 100 days & deathiversaries. He is very helpful and informative with families who are less knowledgeable about these burial traditions and we like his style of praying. I also later found out that Thay Nhu Hai is friends with the Headmaster at Quang Thien Temple, Thay Minh Dung. I guess it's a small world when it comes to a minority community of Vietnamese Buddhist in southern California. So my mom and I come here a few times a year to visit this little temple and to have tea with Thay Nhu Hai. I appreciate the conversations he has with him because I feel like he provides a very deep and wise moral outlook on life. He is simple enough that even a non-Buddhist can understand and appreciate his profound wisdom. On a few of our visits, we have ran into a few of his other disciples from out of state who have sought out his temple during their visit to California. He clearly made an impression on their lives if they took the time to see him on their vacation. When my mom had her surgeries, Thay Nhu Hai heard about it somehow and he actually reached out to her to ask how she was doing and that he would pray for her quick recovery. I think that is so caring, especially since we aren't even his weekly Sunday disciples. Not to make it sound casual, but in the past I have actually called or texted him to pray for people for me. "Cau An" is praying for wellbeing for the living and "Cau Sieu" is praying for peace for the dead. Thay Nhu Hai is a very benevolent and compassionate individual. I would definitely take my mom to Da Bao Temple more often if it was closer to home, but we always come during New Years during our Temple-hopping routine and a few more times throughout the year. I always love the smaller temples because I feel like they care more.
