This Chua was such a wonderful experience and a beautiful place for a weekend visit. There's so many vendors and options depending on what you are in the mood for. It's really great that those proceeds go to the temple. The bun Bo hue was complimentary and it was really delicious. It definitely had a nice spicy kick to the flavor that I thoroughly enjoyed. The temple inside was very peaceful and there for areas you could pray. The staff all seemed very friendly and welcoming. The parking is definitely very tricky. You have to arrive before 10am to secure a spot and even then there are cars that will park behind you. But, most people are good about leaving their number on the dash to reach out.

I love chua Phat To so much. The food here is always good and you have plenty of food options to purchase and however don't forget to donate for the temple in order to grow and blessing.

This is a wonderful Vietnamese Buddhist Temple that my family and I frequent on Sundays to light incense, say prayer and enjoy amazing vegetarian food. For Lunar New Year 2024, I brought my parents here and it was so beautifully decorated! Despite the long lines for free food (cash donation accepted), it's very impressive how smooth the operations are run by numerous Temple volunteers. From cooking to cleaning to vending, it's a well-oiled production out of love and generosity. There were at least a dozen dishes, desserts and drinks to buy to support the temple for $8-$10 per item and they accept cash only. Parking can be difficult if you come before 2pm since this Temple is located within a small residential community. Chua Phat To (Gotama Temple) is a lovely place to visit on a regular basis and especially during Lunar New Year!

Beautiful, welcoming, neighborhood temple. I came here on a Sunday afternoon for a vegetarian meal (cost: donation) and to buy vegetarian goodies. Everyone that I encountered was super sweet and kind and of course the food was super good. I definitely will be back to support this gem.

I come here once in a while with my dad around 11am on Sunday's to pray and eat vegetarian food. It's quite crowded but the people working/volunteering there are nice and food is delicious! There are two lines, one for noodle soup dishes (my favorite) and another line for rice and entrees to go with the rice. At the end of the rice line, there's also usually fruit or donuts that serve as dessert. You can basically get as much food as you want just by going back in line. They sell desserts on the side (like tofu flower, rau ma, and Che). From the past few times I've been here, they always change up the food/dishes! We also always end up buying some vegetarian food to go as well. Don't forget to donate money because although the vegetarian meal served at the temple is free, they are all based on donations.

If you live close by to this temple, you should come to visit this temple. This temple offers free Vegetarian lunch on every Saturday & Sunday. Besides, there are so many other food selection that you can buy for your vegetarian craving. Food is too notch and super good. I visit here almost every week. At least, you should give some small donation, so that we can keep the tradition for a long time. Your support would help the temple go a long way and other vegetarian food lovers have a place to hangout. Eat & pray at the same place, why not? This temple is definitely one of my favorite places! We can also learn more about the peaceful & beautiful Buddhism when we visit here.

This is my favorite temple, ever. I've been going here with my family since I was a little girl. Parking is ample and there are street parking in the local neighborhood. When my grandparents passed away, we always had the religious ceremony here. We always visit this temple around Lunar New Year/Tet and it is packed with people from all over So Cal. It is the only temple that generously offers delicious vegetarian food and they have lots of tables and chairs that welcomes you to join the temple in meals. The monks and volunteers here are very welcoming. It is very convenient for Vietnamese people from Long Beach to go here for temple on Sundays instead of having to drive down to the OC for all the other temples scattered around Garden Grove, Westminster areas.

It's a small Vietnamese Buddhist temple that my friend and I stumbled upon because we parked right next to it when we were going somewhere to eat. I'M SADDDD that we didn't go to the temple first because they sell food! I could see the tents sent up in the back with tables and a few people eating there wahhhhhh :(... BUT my friend and I went to the Kuan Yin statue. Took off our shoes to go onto the place mat and scavenged to find a lighter to light our incense and pray with. There were some school kids running on the side, and inside the temple were monks walking around doing a ritual. Different things going on in different sections of this small temple, but it was very peaceful and very lovely.

Ask the Community - Chua Phat To

Hi everyone, Does the temple open on Wednesday or Thursday? And how is the parking situation on any weekday? Thank you!

Parking is not an issue on weekdays.

I recently when to Thailand and got a sak yant but i didn't have time do get it blessed and go through a blessing ceremony, does anyone know if i could do so at this temple?

I don't know what a sak yank is. But if you want something blessed I don't see why they wouldn't do it. Call to ask before you head out .. or go on a non busy day like weekdays and speak to one of the sisters or monks there.

Do they have vegetarian food on Saturday?

Yes yes yes and on Sunday as well.

Pre-pandemic, this temple was a smaller lot that eventually extended to what it is now. During…read morenon-celebratory days will allow for parking on the lot, but during days of observance and celebration, you'll have to find street parking. Parking in the neighborhood is impacted, so it's best to just get there early. The monks here speak various languages and chant in Pali. If you only speak English, some do speak English, so don't shy away from asking questions. Volunteers and temple devotees are usually on site to help with inquiries. If you read Khmer, this temple has the chants pre-printed in booklets in Khmer, so you can follow along. For those who are not familiar with temple schedules, monks eat before noon, so all the substantive services occur in the morning. I visited for the Killing Fields Memorial Center annual observance, which is every April 17th. DO: - Bring something to share or offer. Donuts and coffee are usually staples because it's an easy, economical, portable breakfast. I brought individually wrapped pastries to add to the mix, because it's self contained and there's usually children who are finicky about their foods who will eat them. - Take off your shoes when stepping onto the straw mats or seating area in front of the monks. - Because of previous point (taking off shoes), do wear shoes that are easy to take off. It's not uncommon for some folks to wear slip-on's or flip flops... don't judge. - Do help clean up after services and eating. After dharma talk, lunch and fellowship, help clean up. At least clean up after yourself or your group. DON'T: - Do not touch the monks. Women, do not try to shake their hands or otherwise make any physical skin-to-skin contact. My fingertip accidentally touch a monk's hand during a blessing of a commonly held item, and I got some harsh lip service back in the day. Learn from my experience. - Do not double dip. So, there's sort of an art to community eating. After dharma, the monks bless the congregation and food and everyone goes eat. If getting your own personal portion and you go for seconds, get a new plate/bowl each trip. Use buffet etiquette. Secondly, if you are eating family style amongst friends/family, place a serving spoon for each dish. It's a pandemic, let's not spread the funk. I enjoy going to this temple because its spacious. Parking is a headache, but, again--go early. Dharma talks have been informative and practical.

It really helped regulate my nervous system And I very much appreciated. Franz and the way he helped guide beginners. What I did not appreciate was a woman who was also a beginner and craved support on an almost competitive level. She was very much attended to and a bit of a trauma dumper. I left for a while because of her, she just kept showing up in my space, but that was my choice to leave. Fast forward to the pandemic I did try to rejoin online and I was met with that same woman who I did try to extend an Olive branch to, since she was struggling and kept "showing up". She was the same trauma dumper, yet didn't remember me. But something that came to light is that I was not allowed to join the book group that she had created. As I got better, I thought about going back in spite of this woman, but then I saw that she is part of faculty Ultimately I decided that a group that would support someone with that behavior, in the way that they did is not the right group for me. I probably should have and I thought about contacting leaders in this group, but at that time, my nervous system was not in a place to defend myself and it's somehow felt small and petty. Better to let her have her way. However, six years later, I see that this is not the Buddhist way, which is the way they follow. I was not shown loving kindness in a time when I really needed it.

I have been attending classes at Long Beach Meditation for years. The teachers are all wonderful,…read morekind, and knowledgeable. Most programs are donation based but they also offer fee-based retreats where you can apply for a scholarship. The facilities are clean and inviting. They serve cold and hot water for tea. You don't need to bring any sitting gear (though you can) as they provide cushions, benches, and chairs. LBM also offers classes online which is super convenient! The community is so welcoming. If you're looking to learn how to meditate or you already have a practice but you want to sit with other people, try one of their classes. I can't recommend this place enough.
